A method and system for using Threat Imaging Projection (TIP) technology, and the operator testing data that it generates, in order to certify x-ray inspection system operators and thereby assure an acceptable and uniform level of operator performance. In a preferred configuration, the operator views x-ray images of objects on a screening system equipped with TIP technology. When the operator believes that a threat item image appears on the screening system, the operator indicates such via an indicating means. The system is capable of recording, storing and transmitting individual operator performance data relating to proper detections, missed detections, and false alarms, i.e., when an operator indicates that a threat item image appears when no such image actually appears on the screening system. The system preferably contains a library of various threat item images, e.g., guns, bombs, knives, etc., which are classified according to type of threat and difficulty of detection.

A method for improving resolution of X-ray radiography systems of the type used to obtain images of internal features of human bodies or to view contents of luggage articles, cargo containers and the like comprises positioning a plurality of baffle plates between the rear surface of an X-ray radiation detector array and a back stop used to limit transmitted X-ray radiation to a safe level. The baffle plates are made of a high atomic-number metal such as iron or lead which reduces by absorption, scattering or other attenuating processes the intensity of X-ray radiation back scattered from the back-stop onto the detector array, thus reducing noise contributions to signals output from detector elements of the array and thereby improving the quality of radiographic images formed from detector output signals. A back-scattered X-ray radiation attenuation apparatus according to the present invention utilizes pairs of horizontal upper and lower baffle plates disposed longitudinally rearward from upper and lower sides of individual X-ray radiation detector elements, or groups of elements, of a detector array, and optionally includes pairs of baffle plates disposed transversely to the horizontally disposed plates to thereby form an array of tubular collimatator elements which intercept and attenuate X-ray radiation scattered from locations on a back-stop on lateral sides of as well as above and below the detector elements.

Back-scattered X-ray radiation attenuation method and apparatus

A method and apparatus for processing signals output from an array of X-ray radiation detectors which receive X-ray radiation emanating from an object irradiated by a source beam of X-ray radiation, to thereby produce an visual image of internal object features, utilizes repetitive sampling P times and digital accumulation of signals output from each detector to increase signal-to-noise ratio of the images by the factor 1/&#x2713;P. The inspection methods and systems of the present invention are mobile, deployable, and capable of scanning a wide variety of receptacles cost-effectively and accurately on uneven surfaces. The inspection system comprises an inspection module that, in a preferred embodiment, is in the form of a mobile trailer capable of being towed and transported to its intended operating site with the help of a tug-vehicle. Generation and distribution of annotation overlays of digital X-ray images for security systems

A method and apparatus for determining a specified physical characteristic in an object exposes the object to at least two angularly fixed sources of electromagnetic radiation to create projected images of the object. The sources are rotationally scanned about the object so as to oscillate in an angular range about the object. The sources are relatively stationary to one another. A three dimensional reconstructed image of the object based on the projected images of the object is created and examined for a specified physical characteristic in the object.

A limited number of views or projections, e.g., two, are used to generated a reconstructed image of an object. In order to improve the quality of the image, terracing and smoothing functions are implemented. In addition, the reconstructed image may be divided into objects and background prior to terracing and smothing and the object and background can be reconstructed separately. Further, after the reconstructed image is generated threat and texture analyses of the reconstructed image may be performed.
