An orthopedic screw with an internal bore and mating driver has a bioabsorbable polymer component. To increase the torque tolerance of the screw and to minimize the likelihood of the driver stripping inside the bore of the screw, the screw and driver are heat treated together to shrink fit the screw onto the driver thereby increasing the driver-to-screw contact and distributing the loading force over a greater area to protect against material failure. The heat treatment involves heating the screw to an elevated temperature and holding that temperature for a period to promote stress relaxation and/or crystallization of the material.

An apparatus for compressing a coiled stent having at least one protrusion, such as an enlarged coil disposed at the end of the stent, has a mandrel insertable into a lumen of the stent for holding the stent by friction and a coil compressor coupled to the mandrel. The mandrel is rotatable on an axis relative to the coil compressor and the coil compressor has a tab extending therefrom towards the mandrel. A stent is placed on the mandrel with the enlarged coil extending toward the coil compressor. The tab presses the enlarged coil inwardly toward the lumen of the stent when the mandrel is rotated relative to the coil compressor.

A cutting device for trimming a coiled strand, such as an arterial, urinary or other intraluminal stent made from metal or plastic wire, has a pair of articulating arms connected at a pivot joint. One of the arms has a holding jaw for holding the coiled strand. A second of the arms has a jaw with a cutter. The holding jaw has a passageway through which the coiled strand may be threaded to aid in holding the coiled strand for cutting by the cutter. The holding jaw preferably has a guide channel formed by a pair of tapered walls that slide between adjacent turns of the coiled strand. In accordance with a method of the invention, an end of the coiled strand is introduced through the passageway in the holding jaw. The coiled strand is rotated to advance the coiled strand through the passageway until the coiled strand is positioned beneath the cutting jaw at the selected location. The lever portions and the jaw portions are then urged together, cutting the coiled strand at the selected location.

A graft fixation device combination. The device is useful for affixing a tissue graft to a bone or other body surface. The fixation device has two implantation members connected by a graft retention member. The retention member optionally has at least one lateral wing member extending therefrom. The implantation members have longitudinal passageways therethrough. The graft fixation device also has an insertion member extending from the distal end of each implantation member, the insertion member having a longitudinal passage having a distal blind wall. The passages of the implantation members and the insertion members are in communication with each other, and may be mounted onto insertion members.

The present invention relates to resorbable glass scaffolds for use in biological applications and methods for making same. Specifically, these scaffolds are composed of phosphate glass fibers, where the rate of dissolution into biological fluids is controlled by the length of time the glass is held above its melt temperature prior to spinning the fiber.

A relic process is used to produce bioresorbable ceramic scaffolds that can be used for in vitro or in vivo growth of human or animal tissue such as bone or cartilage. The process involves impregnating an organic fabric template with metal and phosphate ceramic precursors, heat treating the impregnated fabric to decompose the fabric to form a ceramic green body, and sintering the ceramic green body to form the scaffold which has a form analogous to that of the fabric template. Impregnating the fabric may be by soaking the fabric in a solution or sol containing the ceramic precursors. The fabric may be formed into a laminate prior to heat treating. Sintering results in fibers of the fabric being cross-sintered with one another to form a three-dimensional scaffold structure having controlled pore size and distribution. The scaffold may be treated with a material that promotes bone growth through the scaffold.

Relic process for producing bioresorbable ceramic tissue scaffolds

A system for injecting controlled release medicinal implants has a syringe-like injector body with a lumen and plunger. A needle is attached to the injector body and receives therein an injectable implant with an internal hollow. The implant is retained in the needle by friction, which is overcome by the plunger upon dispensing. As the plunger moves from the retracted position to the deployed position, it forces a medicament previously loaded into the injector body into the implant hollow and then pushes the implant out of the needle into the creature into which the needle has been inserted. The implant may contain a filler to absorb flowable medicaments to aid in their retention within the implant. As in known implants, the medicament is released gradually depending upon the dissolution rate of the implant body which is formed from a biodegradable material. Because the medicament is loaded into the implant at the time of injection, issues concerning the reaction of the medicament with the implant material during preparation and storage are eliminated.
