A laser tuning system includes an optical transmitter having a tunable laser that transmits optical signals at various wavelengths to an optical fiber through an optical component, which attenuates a range of wavelengths of the optical signal. An optical detector detects optical returns that have been reflected from the fiber at points beyond the optical component. A tuning control module analyzes the optical returns in order to provide a tuning value for tuning the laser to a desired wavelength. As an example, the laser may be tuned in order to maximize or otherwise increase the amount of optical power passing through the optical component.

Systems and methods for tuning lasers using reflected optical signals

Methods, systems, and apparatus for communicating over a radio link by devices with broadband connectivity are disclosed. In one aspect, a telecommunications device includes a first transceiver, a second transceiver, and a state monitor. The first transceiver communicates over a broadband link. The second transceiver communicates over a radio link. The radio link is a Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) link. The state monitor includes one or more processes that monitor a state of the telecommunications device, and in response to the state of the telecommunications device being one of a plurality of pre-specified states, transmit, using the second transceiver, data specifying the state of the telecommunications device over the radio link.

The present disclosure generally pertains to systems and methods for communicating data. In one exemplary embodiment, a system has a high-speed channel, such as an optical fiber, between a network facility, such as a central office (CO), and a first intermediate point between the network facility and a plurality of customer premises (CP). Digital communication links, such as DSL links, are used to carry data between the first intermediate point, such as a feeder distribution interface (FDI), and a second intermediate point, such as the Distribution Point (DP). Non-shared links may then carry the data from the second intermediate point to the CPs. The links between the two intermediate points are bonded to create a high-speed, shared data channel that permits peak data rates much greater than what would be achievable without bonding. In some embodiments, multicast data flows may be prioritized and transmitted across a set of connections to each of the intermediate points. In addition, it is possible to power components at the intermediate points from one or more of the CPs.

A system for scaling vectored DSLAM deployments has a DSLAM interfaced with a cross-connect apparatus. The DSLAM receives POTS signals from at least one bridge connection assembly. When a DSLAM is added at the cross-connect facility, at least one connector of the bridge connection assembly is disconnected from an existing DSLAM and is interfaced with the newly-added DSLAM. By moving the connector to the newly-added DSLAM, a batch of downstream distribution pairs (which are preferably bound by a single distribution cable) are effectively moved from the existing DSLAM to the new DSLAM without having to reconfigure the jumpers of the cross-connect apparatus. Accordingly, it is possible to scale the cross-connect facility to any number of vectored DSLAMs while limiting vector group sizes, thereby reducing the complexity of vectoring operations, without having to perform complex reconfigurations of the cross-connect apparatus.

A communication system has a trunk extending from a network facility, such as a central office, with a plurality of distribution points positioned along the trunk. Each leg of the trunk defines a shared channel that permits peak data rates much greater than what would be achievable without channel sharing. As an example, the connections of each respective trunk leg may be bonded. Further, the same modulation format and crosstalk vectoring are used for each leg of the trunk. The crosstalk vectoring cancels both far-end crosstalk (FEXT) that couples between connections of a given trunk leg and crossover crosstalk that couples between one trunk leg and another. In addition, logic determines an amount of excess capacity available for each leg of the trunk and controls error correction based on the determined excess capacity.

Systems and methods for communicating among network distribution points

A communications system includes at least one telecommunications access module coupled to a plurality of communications subscriber line pairs and comprising at least one bonding engine. A module is configured to receive a provisioning request and determine the total number of communications subscriber line pairs available to form a bonding group and select at least one bonding engine for the bonding group. A data processor is configured to determine a maximum packet fragment size for the data packets based on the total number of available subscriber line pairs forming the bonding group. A maximum packet fragment size is adapted to the number of communications line pairs within the bending group and the bonding engine fragments the data packets into the packet fragments. A transmitter receives the packet fragments and transmits the packet fragments over the communications subscriber line pairs forming the bonding group.

An optical communication system comprises a network interface device (NID) having a media converter coupled to an optical fiber of a passive optical network (PON). The media converter converts optical signals from the PON into electrical signals for communication across at least one non-optical channel, such as a conductive or wireless connection, to customer premises equipment (CPE), such as a residential gateway or other customer premises (CP) device. Rather than implementing an optical media access control (optical MAC) layer in the NID, an optical MAC layer for handling PON protocols and management is implemented by the CPE, thereby effectively extending the customer end of the PON across at least one non-optical connection to the CPE. By implementing the optical MAC layer at the CPE, the complexity of the NID is reduced thereby lowering the cost of the NID. In one embodiment, in an effort to further reduce the complexity of the NID, the optical MAC layer is configured to control a laser-on state of an optical transmitter in the NID.

Systems and methods for extending optical network services across non-optical channels

The present disclosure generally pertains to systems and methods for powering service units. A service unit has a plurality of first transceivers coupled to a plurality of customer premises (CP) transceivers via drop connections, and each of the drop connections is coupled to a respective one of the CP transceivers. The service unit has forwarding logic that is configured to forward data packets to the first transceivers. The service unit further has a power management unit configured to receive electrical power from at least one of the drop connections and to power at least one component of the service unit based on the received electrical power.

A communication system comprises a plurality of line cards having transceivers coupled to a plurality of subscriber lines. Each line card has at least one transceiver within the same vectoring group, and each line card also has vector logic capable of cancelling crosstalk induced by a tone communicated by any member of the vector group. Further, the line cards are coupled to one another via a data connection across which a vectoring stream carrying vectoring information from one line card to the next. The present disclosure generally pertains to systems and methods for allocating bonding engines among bonding groups. In one exemplary embodiment, a provision module is configured to allocate bonding engines. When selecting a bonding engine for a new bonding group, the provision module only considers bonding engines residing on access modules that terminate at least one of the communication links of the bonding group. Out of the bonding engines residing on access modules terminating at least one communication link of the bonding group, the provision module selects a bonding engine servicing the least number of external links and assigns the selected bonding engine to the bonding group. The provision module also provisions the access modules terminating the communication links of the bonding group such that the selected bonding engine bonds such communication links during operation.

Systems and methods for allocating bonding engines in network communications

The present disclosure generally pertains to an arrayed media converter (AMC) that has an array of Wavelength Division Multiplexing-Passive Optical Network (WDM-PON) Optical Network Units (ONUs) for terminating an optical channel in the feeder or distribution portion of a telecommunication network. The ONU converts an optical signal from the optical channel into at least one electrical signal for transmission to a customer premises. Thus, the AMC serves as an interface between at least one WDM-PON link and at least one conductive connection, such as a twisted pair. In one exemplary embodiment, the AMC comprises a sealed housing that is environmentally hardened to protect the AMC from environmental conditions, including changes in weather. Such an AMC may be used to provide a robust, cost effective Fiber To The Curb (FTTC) solution, but the AMC may be used at other points within the network, if desired.

Access multiplexers and methods for multiplexing telecommunication signals using an arrayed media converter

A correlation optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) system embeds an OTDR signal in a digital data signal that is to be converted into an optical signal and transmitted across an optical fiber to a remote receiver. In particular, the digital data signal is amplitude modulated with the OTDR signal, which is based on a pseudo noise (PN) sequence, such as an M-sequence. The amplitude modulation is relatively small, for example, less than about 10% of the digital data signal's peak amplitude in an effort to limit the OTDR signal's effect on communication performance. A sequence recovery element receives reflections from the optical fiber and converts the reflections to digital samples. Each digital sample from the sequence recovery element is correlated by correlators that respectively correspond to delays and, hence, locations along the optical fiber, and accumulators accumulate the correlation values from the correlators. Based on the accumulated values, the correlation OTDR system unobtrusively identifies anomaly locations along the optical fiber while payload data is being communicated across the fiber.
