A method for making a coating composition by mixing one or more latex polymers and an aliphatic epoxy resin system having an epoxy equivalent weight less than 1000 and being distinct from the one or more latex polymers to provide an aqueous first component, and providing a second component having reactive groups that can react with the one or more epoxy resins. A mixture of the first and second components provides a film-forming curable coating composition that may be used on substrates including cement, cement fiberboard, wood, metal, plastic, ceramic, glass and composites.

A coated article which includes a cement fiberboard substrate and a radiation-curable coating system applied to the substrate. The coating system includes one or more olefinic compounds and one or more PVC dispersion resins, and may be provided in the form of one or more coating compositions that may be applied in one or more layers.

Multi-component coating method for porous substrates

A substrate may be coated with a various combinations of a water-dispersible polyisocyanate, a water-soluble acid or salt thereof, and/or an isocyanate-reactive compound. A cement fiberboard substrate is treated on at least one edge of the substrate with an aqueous solution containing at least one phosphorus acid or salt of a phosphorus acid. The treated edge is overcoated with a sealer, primer or topcoat. The resulting prefinished fiber cement siding product has improved coating adhesion, especially near burnished regions and near edges and corners proximate the burnished regions. A phosphorus acid or salt of a phosphorus acid also may be added to the sealer to provide further improvement in coating adhesion.

Treatment for cement composite articles

A coated article and method of employing a water-based coating composition on a fiber cement composite substrate is provided. The coating composition contains: an epoxy resin, a crosslinker having epoxide-reactive functional groups, a latex polymer distinct from the epoxy resin, and water.

The present invention provides acidic compositions and methods that are adapted to impart color to cementitious or mineral substrate surfaces. Specifically, the present invention relates to acidic compositions and methods adapted to treat cementitious or mineral substrate surfaces that have the advantage of using a less corrosive acid-based solution. The acidic composition incorporates species including a weak base in equilibrium with a conjugate acid. The presence of such species moderates the corrosive behavior of the acid while still allowing excellent coloring action to occur.
