The present invention is directed to an electrodepositable coating composition comprising an electrodepositable binder comprising an ionic salt group-containing film-forming polymer comprising active hydrogen functional groups, and a blocked polyisocyanate curing agent; a solubilized bismuth catalyst; and a guanidine; wherein the electrodepositable coating composition has a weight ratio of bismuth metal from the solubilized bismuth catalyst to guanidine of from 1.00:0.071 to 1.0:2.1 and/or a molar ratio of bismuth metal to guanidine of from 1.0:0.25 to 1.0:3.0. Also disclosed are methods of treating electrodepositable coating compositions, methods for making electrodepositable coating compositions, systems for coating a metal substrate, coatings, coated substrates, and methods of coating a substrate.

Phosphate resistant electrodepositable coating compositions

The present invention is directed towards an electrodepositable coating composition comprising a cationic electrodepositable binder; a phyllosilicate pigment; and a dispersing agent. Also disclosed are methods of making the electrodepositable coating composition, coatings derived therefrom, and substrates coated with the coatings derived from the electrodepositable coating composition.

Disclosed is a system for treating a surface of a multi-metal article. The system includes first and second and/or third conversion compositions for contacting at least a portion of the surface. The first conversion composition includes phosphate ions and zinc ions and is substantially free of fluoride. The second conversion composition includes a lanthanide series metal cation and an oxidizing agent. The third conversion composition includes an organophosphate compound, an organophosphonate compound, or combinations thereof that optionally may include at least one transition metal. Methods of treating a multi-metal article using the system also are disclosed. Also disclosed are substrates treated with the system and method.

Two-step pretreatment system and method

Disclosed is a system for maintaining a pretreatment bath containing a pretreatment comprising a Group IVB metal. The system comprises an aqueous reducing agent comprising a metal cation and a latent source of sulfate which, upon reaction with a contaminant in the pretreatment bath, forms a metal sulfate. The contaminant comprises a nitrite source. The metal sulfate salt has a pKsp of 4.5 to 11 at a temperature of 25&#xb0; C. Also disclosed is a method for maintaining a pretreatment bath containing a pretreatment composition comprising a Group IVB metal. The method comprises supplying the reducing agent to the pretreatment bath in an amount sufficient to reduce a pollution ratio of the pretreatment bath to less than 1:1. Also disclosed are substrates with a pretreatment bath maintained according to the system and method.

Systems and methods for maintaining pretreatment baths

The present invention is directed towards an aqueous alkaline cleaner composition comprising: an iron cation, a molybdenum cation, a cobalt cation, or combinations thereof; and an alkaline component; wherein the pH of the aqueous alkaline composition is at least 10, and the aqueous alkaline composition includes no more than 50 ppm of phosphate. Also disclosed are treatment systems comprising an aqueous alkaline composition for treating at least a portion of a substrate, and a pretreatment composition for treating at least a portion of a substrate.
