A fibrous composite material comprising carbon fibres and chemically delaminated vermiculite lamellae and production of the material by applying a suspension (preferably an aqueous suspension) of the lamellae to carbon fibres and removing the liquid medium from the suspension. The composite material is useful for the insulation and fire-protection of substrates.

Fibrous composite materials

A fibrous composite material of essentially two-dimensional form in the form of individual fibres, sheets or layers comprising combustible fibres and lamellae of a layer mineral of size below 50 microns, a method for the manufacture of the fibrous composite materials by applying lamellae of a layer mineral to the fibres preferably from suspension followed by removal of the liquid phase of the suspension, and use of the fibrous composite materials for the fire-protection of substrates.

Fibrous material comprised of vermiculte coated fibers

A process for producing solid vermiculite products which are stable in water which comprises incorporating a source of ammonia or ammonium ions or a basic substance, preferably urea, in an aqueous suspension of vermiculite lamellae, shaping the suspension and removing water from the suspension by heating the shaped suspension at a temperature above 100.degree. C., preferably above 150.degree. C., such that ammonia or a basic substance is liberated within the suspension. The invention includes an aqueous suspension of vermiculite lamellae containing a source of ammonia or ammonium ions or a basic substance and a dry-powder mixture of vermiculite lamellae and a source of ammonia or ammonium ions or a basic substance.

Fibrous material comprised of vermiculite coated fibers

An aluminum substrate comprising a layer of lamellae of a layer mineral, preferably vermiculite, in which substantially all of the lamellae are of size below 50 microns, production of the coating by applying a suspension of the lamellae to the substrate and removing the liquid from the suspension. The coating significantly upgrades the thermal insulation and fire performance of aluminum substrates even when only a few microns, for example below 50 microns and even below 10 microns, in thickness.

Fibrous composite materials and the production and use thereof

An aqueous coating composition for the corrosion-protection and/or fire-protection of substrates comprising a dispersion of chemically delaminated vermiculite lamellae in an aqueous solution or dispersion of a film-forming polymeric binder. Preferably the vermiculite lamellae are of size below 50 microns, especially below 20 microns, and the film-forming polymeric binder is in the form of a colloidal dispersion or emulsion of the polymer in water such as is commonly called a latex.

Aqueous coating compositions

A fibrous composite material in the form of a three-dimensional block comprising a mass of combustible fibres and lamellae of a layer mineral, a method for the manufacture of the fibrous composite materials by applying lamellae of a layer mineral, preferably from a suspension, to combustible fibres and forming the fibres and layer mineral into a three-dimensional block, and use of the fibrous composite materials as insulating materials and for the fire protection of substrates.

A method of preparing a porous sheet product which comprises the step of introducing a spinning liquid comprising an organic fibre forming polymeric material into an electric field whereby fibres are drawn from the liquid to an electrode and collecting the fibres so produced upon the electrode. PTFE and other fluorinated polymer mats produced by the electrostatic process are useful as electrolytic cell diaphragms, battery separators etc.

An electrochemical cell having an anode and a cathode separated by a diaphragm wherein the diaphragm comprises a porous polymeric material containing units derived from tetrafluoroethylene, said material having a microstructure characterized by nodes interconnected by fibrils.

Electrolytic process

A metal phosphate coating is applied to a glass article. A liquid composition containing at least in part an organic component and a metal compound having a metal with an atomic number of 12, 14, 20-32, 39-50, 56-80, 90 or 92 and an oxyacid of phosphorus is applied to the glass article. The liquid composition is converted to the metal phosphate coating, i.e., by air drying and/or heating, to give a coating of 0.01 to 5 microns thickness and being transparent to visible light but ultra-violet absorbing.

Coatings of metal phosphates on metals or glass

A process for providing an abrasion resistant coating on the surface of a glass container by treating the container with a solution containing 0.5 to 10% by weight of phosphoric acid and less than 5% by weight of metal phosphate in an aqueous diluent, the temperature of the surface of the container being at least 300.degree. C, and thereafter applying a lubricious organic cold-end coating to the surface of the container.

Process for applying abrasion resistant phosphate coating to glass

An organic polymer article has a surface coating of a metal phosphate. The coating has a thickness in the range of 0.01 to 5 microns; preferably, the metal phosphate comprises a mixture of iron and titanium orthophosphate, although the metal may be chosen from the elements of a periodic table having an atomic number of 12, 14, 20 to 32, 39 to 50, 56 to 80, 90 or 92. A continuous coating of the metal phosphate is obtained by applying to the organic polymer article a solution of a compound of the metal wherein the solution contains an organic component. The solution is converted to the coating of the metal phosphate by drying.
