A system for delivering an intraocular lens (IOL) is disclosed, including: a handpiece including a barrel defining an elongate passage, a pushrod disposed inside the elongate passage, and a plunger coupled to the pushrod; and a delivery unit coupled to a first end of the barrel, the delivery unit including a delivery tube and a lens holder coupled to the delivery tube, the lens holder including a lead haptic shelf arranged to receive a lead haptic of an IOL that is contained inside the lens holder, wherein the lead haptic shelf is configured to fold the lead haptic of the IOL over a body of the IOL while permitting the IOL to travel under the lead haptic shelf when the IOL is displaced from the lens holder to the delivery tube by the pushrod during delivery of the IOL into a patient's eye.

Intraocular lens insertion system

This intraocular lens (IOL) injector cartridge has a proximal opening in a main body for receiving an IOL. The main body has a lumen that extends longitudinally to a distal end having an opening smaller than the IOL. Passage through the lumen compresses or rolls the IOL so that when the distal end is inserted through a small incision in the eye the IOL can be expelled into the capsular bag. The distal end of the cartridge is beveled with a leading tip in front of a trailing heel. The characteristics of the beveled end are such that damage to the IOL is reduced. The bevel may be straight or curved and includes a distal face defined by the thickness of the distal end between the lumen and an exterior surface. The distal face may be flush with the bevel or chamfered. An inner corner angle between the distal face and the lumen is ≥60° to reduce the chance of scratching the IOL as it passes out of the distal opening.

Atraumatic IOL insertion cartridge opening

A system and method for performing an ocular surgical procedure is provided. The design maintains IOL temperature prior to implantation by assessing a desired IOL temperature, sensing existing IOL temperature, and maintaining the IOL substantially at the desired IOL temperature based at least in part on said existing IOL temperature. The method of maintaining desired IOL temperature involves comparing current IOL temperature with pre-established desired temperature conditions to determine a temperature change. The IOL is maintained substantially at the desired temperature based at least in part on the existing IOL temperature.

Intraocular lens temperature control system

This intraocular lens (IOL) injector cartridge has a proximal opening in a main body for receiving an IOL. Accordingly, embodiments of the present invention provide an IOL insertion device that facilitates the injection of the IOL in a controlled manner. The insertion device includes a front modular portion and an injector. The modular portion may be preloaded with an IOL and coupled with the injector. The injector includes a distal portion, a body, and a plunger. The distal portion includes a front seal which has a longitudinal bore at the center, through which a distal portion of the plunger passes. The plunger tip is tapered. The plunger also includes a sealing element situated between its distal portion and its proximal portion. The sealing element includes a small aperture through which a fluid, such as a viscoelastic or a balanced salt solution ('BSS') and the like, may pass toward the proximal end of the body when the plunger advances distally. As the fluid passes through the small aperture on the sealing element on the plunger, a constant speed and force is maintained as the IOL is ejected into the eye.

Intraocular lens insertion device

A cartridge for an intraocular lens insertion device is disclosed. An example cartridge may include an intraocular lens insertion cartridge body having a distal end and a proximal end and configured to receive an intraocular lens for insertion into a patient's eye through an incision; the intraocular lens insertion cartridge body having an inner surface comprising at least one polymeric material having a hardness greater than about 50D and an elongation at break greater than about 150%; the inner surface of the intraocular lens insertion cartridge body defining an at least partially tapering insertion pathway disposed within the intraocular lens insertion cartridge body and extending from the proximal end to the distal end of the intraocular lens insertion cartridge body.

A cartridge for an intraocular lens insertion device is disclosed. An example cartridge may include an intraocular lens insertion cartridge body having a distal end and a proximal end and configured to receive an intraocular lens for insertion into a patient's eye through an incision; the intraocular lens insertion cartridge body having an inner surface comprising at least one polymeric material having a hardness greater than about 50 D and an elongation at break greater than about 150%; the inner surface of the intraocular lens insertion cartridge body defining an at least partially tapering insertion pathway disposed within the intraocular lens insertion cartridge body and extending from the proximal end to the distal end of the intraocular lens insertion cartridge body.

A system and method for performing an ocular surgical procedure is provided. The design provides an intra-ocular lens (IOL) to an eye through an incision in the eye by assessing IOL insertion conditions, translating said IOL insertion conditions into a desired force range for insertion of the IOL via the incision, controlling a power source to move the IOL to the eye, monitoring conditions, such as force encountered, while controlling the power source. The design employs feedback of the force encountered and selectively alters force applied based on force encountered.
