A method for operating a motor vehicle internal combustion engine with an exhaust system branch in which a wall-flow exhaust particle filter is arranged. An amount of ash and an amount of soot accumulated in the exhaust particle filter are continuously determined. An ash increase value characterizing an increase in the amount of ash is determined and if pre-set conditions are present, the operation of the internal combustion engine is changed over to a special operating mode for performing an ash detachment and transportation operation, in which operating variables of the internal combustion engine are set such that, on the exhaust entry side in the exhaust particle filter, a pre-settable minimum exhaust flow speed results at which detachment of ash attached to the channel walls of the exhaust particle filter and transportation of detached ash in the direction of the respective inlet channel end is made possible.

Method and apparatus for evaluating an ammonia conversion efficiency of an ammonia oxidation (AMOX) catalyst for reducing ammonia and hydrocarbons present in an exhaust gas stream. The AMOX associated with an exhaust gas after-treatment system has a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst for reducing nitrogen oxides (NO) present in the exhaust gas stream and a dosing system for introducing a reductant into the exhaust gas stream for reacting with the nitrogen oxides in the presence of the SCR catalyst. A system and method for controlling an internal combustion engine senses differential pressure across the diesel particulate filter to monitor at least one of soot cake permeability and filter wall permeability as a function of exhaust temperature and mass flow velocity. A doser is in the DPF and actuated by commands from the ECU. The method includes sensors at the DPF and SCR electronically connected to the ECU to transmit data signals indicative of operating conditions at the DPF and SCR. The method includes sensing the temperature at an outlet of the DPF and an inlet at the SCR, determining whether that temperature is at least a predetermined temperature for a predetermined period of time, and introducing heat to the SCR to raise its temperature to a predetermined level for a predetermined period of time, such as light off temperature, to operate more efficiently. Heat may be introduced in the exhaust stream by engine thermal management strategies as well.

A system for controlling engine air/fuel ratio includes an engine, a compressor having an inlet receiving air. The compressor discharges air to the engine intake. A recirculation path is provided from the compressor discharge to the compressor inlet. A controllable valve is located along the recirculation path. A controller is programmed to control the valve to vary the air flow to the engine intake, thereby controlling the air/fuel ratio. Various applications for the compressor recirculation arrangement are possible.
