Existing currency validation (CVAL) devices, systems, and methods are too slow, costly, intrusive, and/or bulky to be routinely used in common transaction locations (e.g., at checkout, at an automatic teller machine, etc.). Presented herein are devices, systems, and methods to facilitate optical validation of documents, merchandise, or currency at common transaction locations and to do so in an obtrusive and convenient way. More specifically, the present invention embraces a validation device that may be used alone or integrated within a larger system (e.g., point of sale system, kiosk, etc.). The present invention also embraces methods for currency validation using the validation device, as well as methods for improving the quality and consistency of data captured by the validation device for validation.

Devices, systems, and methods for optical validation

A hand-held indicia-reading device includes a housing and a cable having a unitary-construction. The indicia-reader has a head portion with an indicia-reading system including a printed circuit board. The entire handle portion of the reader is typically over-molded onto a host-connector cable. The host-connector cable includes a circuit board connector on one end and a connector for connecting to a host at an opposite end extending from a base portion of the handle.

A system for selectively reading code symbols includes a code-symbol-capturing subsystem for acquiring information about code symbols within the code-symbol-capturing subsystem's field of view. The system also includes a code-symbol-decoding processor that detects a marked region of interest within the code-symbol-capturing subsystem's field of view. After initialization, the code-symbol-decoding processor decodes only those code symbols falling within the marked region of interest.

A hand mount for a mobile scanner includes an elongated body having an upper surface, a lower surface opposite the upper surface, a scanner receiving cradle disposed on the upper surface that removably receives a mobile scanner, a scanning end, and an opposite securing end; a hook extends outward from the lower surface of the body, adjacent the scanning end, and bends towards the securing end; and a conformable wrist wrap is positioned adjacent the securing end of the body, with the body being positionable on a back area of a wearer's hand whereby the hook is received between a thumb and index finger of the hand and the conformable wrist wrap is wrapped around a wrist area.

A flexible scan element for a laser scanner is disclosed. The flexible can element may be made from a non-linear elastomeric material that twists sufficiently for scan operation but resists unwanted motion from shock/vibration through the use of a rigid motion-limiting member encapsulated, at least partially, within the body of the flexible scan element. In this way, no external components are required for limiting excess motion.

A method for operating an indicia reader such as a laser scanner is provided. The method affords a simplified technique for monitoring the offset between the drive frequency and the resonant oscillation frequency of the laser scanner. The phase offset between the drive frequency and the sense frequency is monitored to derive the drive frequency's offset from the resonant oscillation frequency.

The system includes a housing having a light transmission window and produces an extremely-elongated laser beam having an elongation ratio (ER) that is defined as greater than 4.5 for any point within the working range of the laser scanning bar code symbol reading system. A laser scanning mechanism is provided for scanning the extremely-elongated laser beam out the light transmission window and across a scanning field defined external to the housing, in which a bar code symbol is present for scanning by the extremely-elongated laser scanning beam.
