A ceramic metal halide arc tube is surrounded by a protective neodymium sleeve supported by a metal frame. As a result of the neodymium sleeve, the lamp is observed to have improved transmission of red color and to exhibit a CRI of at least about 90.

High lumen output quartz metal halide lamps are provided which comprise a vacuum outer fill, and a silicon nitride CVD coating on the outside of the quartz arc tubes (discharge tubes). Instead of nitrogen filled outers, vacuum lamp outers are used to reduce energy loss (since heat conduction loss is reduced) and to increase lumen output. Additionally, only the outside of the arc tubes is coated with silicon nitride, without coating the metal components. This reduces or blocks sodium diffusion through the quartz walls. The silicon nitride coating also retards migration of the trace hydrogen from the lamp outer into the arc tube. At least about a 10% increase, and preferably a 15% increase in lumen output is realized by using a vacuum lamp outer instead of the nitrogen fill outer conventionally used for the traditional quartz fill lamps. The heat conduction loss is reduced and the lamp efficiency is increased significantly.

Quartz metal halide lamps with high lumen output

A metal halide lamp includes an arc tube and a surrounding tubular quartz sleeve between a wire frame. The wire frame is formed from a pair of substantially parallel wire frame members and a top section where the two frame members meet. The two frame members are mounted to a glass stem containing current supply leads. The sleeve is provided with two pairs of diametrically opposed apertures, each pair of apertures receiving an elongate wire U-clip which engages a pinched end of the arc tube inside the sleeve and the frame members outside the sleeve. A disk having a slot is inserted over a top section of the wire frame through the slot.

Dome shield for protected metal halide lamps

Metal halide lamp includes an arc tube and a surrounding tubular quartz sleeve between a pair of parallel wire frame members mounted to a glass stem containing current supply leads. The sleeve is provided with two pairs of diametrically opposed apertures, each pair of apertures receiving an elongate wire U-clip which engages a pinched end of the arc tube inside the sleeve and the frame members outside the sleeve. Distal ends of each U-clip are welded to a frame member to fix the position of the arc tube and the sleeve.

A protective sleeve of quartz surrounding a metal halide arc tube is fixed to upright portions of a frame by means of retaining rings. The frame has lower ends formed with coils fitted over the glass stem in an interference fit, thereby insulating the frame from the electrical leads sealed in the stem. An intermediate portion of the frame fits closely in the opposite end of the lamp to stabilize the burner assembly and shield.
