Methods of ordering and manufacturing orthopedic components eliminate the need to stockpile and inventory large volumes of implants and instruments. In one exemplary embodiment, the surgeon begins by acquiring anatomical data from a patient. The anatomical data may then be loaded into a data comparison program. The data comparison program performs a best-fit analysis by comparing the patient's anatomical data to a number of predesigned, tested, and validated virtual implant models that are stored in a database. Once an implant has been identified by the data comparison program for the individual patient, the surgeon may place an order electronically with the manufacturer via the internet. In one exemplary embodiment, when placing the order, the surgeon will specify the type of implant, the surgery date, specific patient information, shipping information, and the preferred surgical technique that the surgeon anticipates using.

Methods of ordering and manufacturing orthopedic components

The present disclosure provides a femoral cut guide for preparing a distal femur to receive a prosthetic femoral component of a knee implant. The prosthetic femoral component includes a central box. The femoral cut guide replicates the size and shape of the prosthetic femoral component, such that the femoral cut guide may serve as a trial or provisional component used to reduce and test the prepared knee joint before implanting the final prosthetic femoral component. The femoral cut guide includes a detachable box cut guide for preparing the distal femur to receive the central box of the prosthetic femoral component.

A hip stem centralizer datum guide and method are provided for positioning a proximal portion of a hip stem component within bone cement in an intramedullary canal of a femur. The datum guide is positionable in a predetermined position relative to the intramedullary canal and is able to create a datum that records the predetermined hip stem component position relative to the intramedullary canal. The datum is able to be referenced to position the hip stem component in the predetermined hip stem component position in the bone cement in the intramedullary canal.

A surgical instrument having a grip, a reference structure and an alignment head and method of using. The reference structure has at least one reference element that is registrable in a computer assisted navigation system. The reference element may be a reflective structure for use in an optical tracking system, wire loop for sensing a magnetic field, or other suitable device. The alignment head has a substantially planar alignment surface and may also have a plurality of outwardly extending projections or an electrocautery electrode disposed along an edge of the alignment surface and extending parallel to the alignment surface. The projections may be engaged with an anatomical structure to hold the alignment head in a desired position as the alignment surface is used as a guide to mark the anatomical structure. The disclosed instrument may be used when resecting a femur to prepare the femur to receive the femoral component of a prosthetic hip joint.

Surgical navigation instrument useful in marking anatomical structures

An orthopaedic instrument for comparing post-surgical joint geometry to pre-surgical joint geometry. The instrument has a head chuck which can be secured to the ball of a ball joint, and an arm having reference indicia thereon. Markings indicative of the pre-surgical joint geometry are made on the bone with reference to the center of the ball. After replacement with a prosthetic ball, the post-operative geometry is verified by securing the head chuck to the prosthetic ball, and comparing the location of the bone markings against the reference indicia on the arm. As needed, adjustments are made in the prosthetic components.

An acetabular cup kit for use during hip replacement surgery includes a polar component with a socket for receiving a femoral head of a femoral prosthesis. A metal shell has a cavity which is configured for receiving the polar component therein. The metal shell also includes an annular face bounding the cavity. A metal ring is attachable with the metal shell at the annular face. The metal ring is configured to retain the polar component within the cavity when attached with the metal shell. The metal ring includes at least one secondary fixation device, such as a flange, allowing fixation of the metal ring with a pelvic bone. A plastic ring is also attachable with the metal shell at the annular face. The plastic ring is configured to retain the polar component within the cavity when attached with the metal shell.

Acetabular cup kit for use during hip replacement surgery

A milling instrument for use in orthopaedic surgery includes an elongate stem for insertion into a prepared intramedullary canal of a bone. A pivotable mill includes a base connected to the stem and a cutting head pivotally connected to the base about a pivot axis. The cutting head has an axis of rotation and is rotatable about the axis of rotation. The cutting head has a first abutment surface positioned relative to the pivot axis and the base has a second abutment surface positioned relative to the pivot axis. The first abutment surface and the second abutment surface abut each other upon pivoting of the cutting head relative to the base at a predetermined angle and thereby limit the pivoting therebetween.

Orthopaedic milling instrument

An apparatus and method for harvesting a tendon graft beneath the overlying tissues through a remote incision which exposes only a portion of the donor tendon from which the graft will be harvested. The apparatus or tendon harvester 10 includes an elongated tubular shaft 20 connected to a cylindrical handle 30 and a length of flexible cutting wire or cable 12. A needle 16 is connected to one end of the cable 12 which extends from the distal end of the shaft 20. The needle end of the cable 12 is affixed to the distal end of the shaft 20 to form a cable loop for slitting the tendon 4. The method using the harvester 10 includes: making an incision to expose only a portion of said donor tendon at the proximal end of the tendon graft to be harvested; slitting or stripping said donor tendon longitudinally to form the tendon graft by passing the cable loop laterally through or around the donor tendon and the moving the cable loop along the donor tendon beneath the overlying tissue; and severing said tendon graft at its distal end beneath the overlying tissue by closing the cable loop.

Apparatus and method for harvesting a tendon graft

This invention includes a ratchet wheel carried by the locking bolt and engaged by a pin carried by the targeting guide. The pin and ratchet wheel permit the locking bolt to rotate in a tightening direction and prevent the bolt from rotating in a direction to cause the bolt to loosen. Therefore, during impact, the bolt is prevented from loosening. After the IM rod is inserted and the surgeon wants to remove the targeting guide, the pin is shifted and locked into a disengaged position with the ratchet wheel to permit the locking bolt to rotate without obstruction. The ratchet pin may be locked in its retracted position.
