Methods, media gateways, and computer program products are described associated with call redundancy for a packet-based network. The described call redundancy involves a receiver module in communication with the packet-based network adapted to receive or transmit data associated with a plurality of calls from one or more signaling links. The data includes signaling information based on a publicly-switched telephone network ('PSTN') standard. A first processor module is in communication with the receiver module and is adapted to process the data associated with the plurality of calls. A second processor module is in communication with the receiver module and the first processor module. The second processor module is adapted to receive at least a portion of the data associated with the plurality of calls. At least a portion of data maintained on the second processor module is synchronized with the corresponding data processed by the first processor module.

Call redundancy for a packet-based network

Methods, systems, and computer program products are described associated with publicly-switched telephone network ('PSTN') signaling at a media gateway for a packet-based network. The described signaling involves receiving, at a media gateway in communication with a packet-based network, signaling information and content information associated with one or more calls. The signaling information is based on a PSTN standard. At least a portion of both the signaling information and the content information is processed at the media gateway using a common processor. At least a portion of the content information is transmitted to a destination based on at least a portion of the signaling information.

Publicly-switched telephone network signaling at a media gateway for a packet-based network

A method and apparatus for improved communication in a communications system is disclosed. The improvement involves storing connection data at a client end of a client-server connection within a communications system. Connection data is transmitted from a server communications device to a data access device. This connection data history can later be retrieved and analyzed by a server communications device to assist in the optimal configuration of communication sessions between the data access device and the server communications device within the communications system.

Method and apparatus for storage and retrieval of connection data in a communications system

Early authentication processing uses the manufacture defined ('MD') sequence made available by communication protocols during the Layer 1 training stage of a communications connection process to initiate an authentication request signal. Initiation of an authentication request during the training stage of a communications connection process is accomplished by packaging authentication request information into an authentication request signal and sending the authentication request signal, during the manufacturer defined sequence portion of Layer 1 training, to a communications connection receiver process. The authentication request information typically comprises a username and a password than can be used to verify the identify of the requester. Additionally, processing of an authentication request during the a communications connection process is provided. The processing comprises receiving an authentication request signal, during the manufacturer defined sequence portion of Layer 1 training, from a communications connection sender process and initiating authentication based upon the authentication request signal. Acknowledgment signals can be sent between the initiator and receiver such that each can be assured that the other received the appropriate information.

Early authentication during modem training

A system providing a framework for the negotiation of a dual-channel communication protocol between modems connected by a communications link. The dual-channel communications link includes a data channel used for sending and receiving data or code and a command channel for sending and receiving command and status information. Enhanced capabilities include providing that data on the data channel may be compressed using one of a plurality of compression algorithms, data may also be encrypted using one of a plurality of encryption algorithms. Additionally, LCP spoofing is provided as a way to reduce the time required to establish PPP links.

Dual-channel communications protocol providing enhanced capabilities for modems

A method and apparatus for identifying one or more characteristics of a networked device, such as a client modem, is disclosed. Values of one or more components of a signal from an unknown device are compared to values of the same components of signals from known devices. Matches determined by this comparison identify characteristics, such as the manufacturer, of the unknown devices to be the same as characteristics of the matched known devices. The comparison values are determined by receiving signals from known devices, and identifying and cataloging values of the one or more signal components in association with characteristics of the known devices. The identified characteristics are stored and later can be accessed or manipulated to derive additional information, such as statistical information based on the characteristics identified for multiple unknown devices.
