A rocker arm includes an outer arm and an inner arm which selectively pivots relative to the outer arm. The rocker arm also includes a lock pin which is displaced along a lock pin axis between a coupled position and a decoupled position. The rocker arm also includes a linkage and a linkage guide which guides the linkage along a linkage axis. One surface of the linkage engages an actuator while another surface of the linkage engages the lock pin such that the linkage translates motion from the actuator to motion of the lock pin.

Switchable rocker arm

A rocker arm includes an outer arm defining a lock pin bore which is centered about a lock pin bore axis and an inner arm which selectively pivots relative to the outer arm about a pivot axis which is parallel to the lock pin bore axis. The inner arm includes a protrusion which defines an inner arm stop surface which is planar. A lock pin is disposed within the lock pin bore, the lock pin having a lock pin slot extending thereinto and also having a lock pin stop surface which is planar. The lock pin is displaced within the lock pin bore between a coupled position in which the lock pin stop surface is aligned with the inner arm stop surface and a decoupled position in which the lock pin slot is aligned with the protrusion.

A system and method for controlling an injection time of a fuel injector. The system includes a drive circuit configured to output a drive signal having a pulse width, wherein the injection time is influenced by the pulse width and a closing electrical decay of the fuel injector. A controller is configured to determine the closing electrical decay of the fuel injector and adapt the pulse width based on the closing electrical decay to control the injection time. The closing electrical decay includes a closing response. The controller determines the closing response based on an injector signal, such as a coil voltage of the fuel injector. By determining the closing response, the pulse width can be adjusted to compensate for fuel injector part-to-part variability, fuel injector wear, variations in fuel pressure received by the fuel injector, dirt in the fuel injector, and the like.

System and method for controlling an injection time of a fuel injector based on closing electrical decay

A fuel injector that includes a sliding armature, decoupled armature, or flying armature movable between a pintle stop and a housing stop. Flying armatures are generally used to increase the total force applied to the pintle stop for lifting the pintle off a nozzle seat to open the fuel injector. When the fuel injector is turned off, a housing stop is arranged to absorb kinetic energy present in the flying armature so that the kinetic energy is not imparted to the nozzle seat.

Fuel injector

A method for determining an optimal combustion interval during start-up of a hydrocarbon catalytic reformer under various conditions of temperature, fuel type, and combustion fuel flow rate. An initial catalyst temperature is measured and an algorithm is used to calculate a rate of heating of the catalyst by combustion based upon heat content of the fuel, selected fuel flow rate, and heat capacity and mass of the catalyst and reformer passages. From the initial temperature and the heating gradient, an optimal combustion interval is inferred through the algorithm and used to terminate combustion, initiate a combustion quench interval, and change over the fuel flow rate and mixture from combustion to reforming.

Reformer start-up strategy for use in a solid oxide fuel cell control system

A method for equalizing fuel injector flows among a plurality of fuel injectors in an internal combustion engine including the steps of a) characterizing the electrical and/or mechanical performance of each fuel injector; b) imprinting characterization data on each fuel injector; c) reading the imprinted data into a control computer, preferably at the time of engine assembly or sub-assembly; and d) using the characterization data in an algorithm to adjust at least one electrical parameter such as hold current, peak current, and boost time for each fuel injector in an assembled engine during each fuel injection cycle.

Method and apparatus for characterizing fuel injector performance to reduce variability in fuel injection

Apparatus and method for substantially reducing or eliminating pressure pulsations caused by the opening and closing of fuel injectors. A preferred embodiment provides a restriction orifice adjacent the inlet end of a fuel injector filter of a respective fuel injector.

In a solid-oxide fuel cell system, the fuel cell stacks, the fuel reformer, tail gas combuster, heat exchangers, and fuel/air manifold, are contained in a 'hot zone' within a thermal enclosure. A separate and larger structural enclosure surrounds the thermal enclosure, defining a 'cool zone' outside the thermal enclosure for incorporation of &#x201c;cool&#x201d; components such as the air supply system and the electronic control system. To prevent unwanted temperature rise in the cool zone during shutdown, from residual heat escaping from the hot zone through the thermal enclosure, the structural enclosure is provided with vents through the lower and upper walls thereof to permit thermal convective circulation of air through the enclosure. The vents are baffled to prevent entry of splash and other contaminants, and the lower vent is provided with a float valve to prevent flooding of the enclosure in event of immersion of the SOFC system.

Solid-oxide fuel cell assembly having a convectively vented structural enclosure

A fuel rail assembly includes a fuel injector socket having a cylindrical end for receiving an injector and a boxed end for orienting and positioning the injector relative to the engine cylinder. A boxed shape end cap is fitted over the boxed end of the socket thereby supporting the socket. Planar saddle members are disposed on each side of the end cap and radiused edges are fitted to the cylindrical surface of the fuel distribution tube. A jump tube communicates fuel from the fuel distribution tube to the fuel injector socket. A bracket defines a sole plate for the assembly, for attachment to an engine head, and includes a generally planar surface for locating against the planar surface of the saddle members. Components of the fuel rail assembly are first assembled loosely on a fixture, then joined together as the fuel rail assembly.

Fuel injector rail assembly for direct injection of fuel

A method for improving the efficiency of a hydrocarbon catalytic reformer and close-coupled fuel cell system by recycling a percentage of the anode exhaust syngas directly into the reformer in a range between about 20% and about 60%. Oxygen is supplied to the reformer at start-up. Under equilibrium conditions, oxygen required for reforming of hydrocarbon fuel is derived entirely from endothermic reforming of water and carbon dioxide in the recycled syngas. Recycling of anode syngas into the reformer increases fuel efficiency, adds excess water to the reformate to increase protection against anode coking, and protects the fuel cell stack against air- and water-borne contaminants. A method for producing an excess amount of syngas for exporting for other purposes is also provided.

Apparatus and method for operation of a high temperature fuel cell system using recycled anode exhaust

A method for fuel cell system thermal management includes: maintaining a first zone at a first selected temperature range, maintaining a second zone at a second selected temperature range, and maintaining a third zone at a third selected temperature range. The second zone is in thermal communication with a first sensor and comprises a reformer, while the third zone is in thermal communication with a second sensor and comprises a fuel cell stack. The second selected temperature range is greater than the first selected temperature range, while the third selected temperature range is greater than the second selected temperature range. A thermal management system for use with an auxiliary power unit includes a first air control valve in fluid communication with a process air supply and a fuel reformer zone, the first air control valve in operable communication with a controller; a second air control valve in fluid communication with a process air supply and a hot zone, the second air control valve in electronic communication with the controller; a reformer zone temperature sensor in thermal communication with the fuel reformer and in operable communication with the controller; a hot zone temperature sensor in thermal communication with the hot zone and in operable communication with the controller; a first outlet at the reformer zone; and a second outlet at the hot zone.

A precision fuel rail assembly for direct fuel injection comprising a plurality of formed parts first assembled and positioned loosely on a precision fixture, then joined (e.g. tack welded), by applying a BFM on all joints forming a 'green' assembly and firing in a brazing oven, to produce a precision assembly formed from stainless steel parts. A bracket defining a sole plate for the assembly may be formed as a continuous element or a plurality of individual fuel rail brackets. Flanged sockets are attached to the bracket at locations corresponding to the fuel injector locations on an engine bank. Bolt holes are provided along the centerline of the sockets and fuel injectors. The bracket supports a fuel distribution tube via saddle elements disposed between the bracket and the tube. A jump tube supplies fuel from the distribution tube to each socket.

Fabricated fuel rail assembly for direct injection of fuel

A method for fuel cell system thermal management includes: maintaining a first zone at a first selected temperature range, maintaining a second zone at a second selected temperature range, and maintaining a third zone at a third selected temperature range. The second zone is in thermal communication with a first sensor and comprises a reformer, while the third zone is in thermal communication with a second sensor and comprises a fuel cell stack. The second selected temperature range is greater than the first selected temperature range, while the third selected temperature range is greater than the second selected temperature range. The method may further include sensing a second zone temperature in the second zone, determining whether the second zone temperature is at the second selected temperature range, and adding a process air flow to the second zone if the second zone temperature rises above the second selected temperature range.

A fuel cell having a non-uniform electrical resistivity over the flow area of the cell. Resistance is higher in areas of the cell having locally low levels of hydrogen than in areas having locally high levels of hydrogen. Excess oxygen ion migration and buildup is suppressed in regions having low hydrogen concentration and is correspondingly increased in regions having a surfeit of hydrogen. Destructive oxidation of the anode is suppressed and a greater percentage of the hydrogen passed into the cell is consumed, thereby increasing electric output.

Fuel cell having optimized pattern of electric resistance

An improved system for more uniformly distributing gaseous fuel over the anode surface of a fuel cell, comprising an interconnect subassembly for electrically connecting anodes and cathodes of adjacent fuel cells in a fuel cell stack. The subassembly includes a perforated plate disposed adjacent the anode surface. The plate may be parallel to or inclined to the anode surface and forms a first wall of a fuel plenum for uniformly distributing fuel via the perforations over the entire surface of the anode. The second wall of the plenum is a plate separating the fuel flow from air flowing across the cathode. Electrical continuity across the interconnect subassembly may be provided, for example, by non-planar upsets such as bumps and dimples in the two plenum plate components, or by metallic foam or filaments disposed between the plates and the electrodes.
