A scalable front end system for a high speed free space optical (FSO) communication system includes multiple optical array assemblies. Each optical array assembly includes an optical array, an angle sensor, a steering system and a base. The multiple optical array assemblies are coupled to respective electro-optic modulators, which in turn are coupled to a splitter, all disposed within an enclosure with one input/output connection.

Scalable optical front end system for free space optical communication

A multi-mode wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) receiver includes a receiver head to receive a free-space optical (FSO) signal. A multi-mode demultiplexers (demux) is coupled to the receiver head via a multi-mode fiber to generate a number of optical signals based on the FSO signal. A number of repeaters modify the optical signals and generate a number of single-mode optical signals.

Multi-mode wavelength division multiplexing for free-space optical communications

A multi-aperture optical system includes a photonic integrated circuit, a spacer substrate coupled to the photonic integrated circuit, a plurality of optical cells, a beam combiner, and a photodetector coupled to the beam combiner. The photonic integrated circuit, the spacer substrate, the plurality of optical cells, the beam combiner, and the photodetector are integrated as a single monolithically formed optical head. Each optical cell includes a focusing optical element formed on the spacer substrate and configured to focus the light through the substrate and onto a folding element. The folding element is integrated into the photonic integrated circuit to couple light incident on the optical cell into a waveguide. The waveguide is coupled to the phase shifter to transport the light reflected by the folding element through a phase shifter. The phase shifter is coupled to the focusing optical element to shift a phase of an optical signal received by the focusing optical element.

Planar optical head for free space optical communications, coherent LIDAR, and other applications

A phased-array coherent transceiver system includes a transceiver array including multiple receive (RX) optical elements, a number of RX optical fibers, and an optical receiver. The RX optical elements are coupled to the optical receiver via the RX optical fibers. The optical receiver includes multiple phase modulators, each phase modulator processes a phase of an optical signal received from an RX optical element.

Phased-array coherent transceiver

A coherent transceiver system includes a local oscillator (LO) light source to generate an LO optical signal. An adaptive fiber array is coupled to the LO light source to dephase the LO optical signal. A balanced detector is coupled to the adaptive fiber array to receive a dephased LO signal from the adaptive fiber array and an optical input signal and to generate a heterodyne signal. A controller receives the heterodyne signal and generates one or more control signals. The adaptive fiber array utilizes the control signals to dephase the LO optical signal.
