A lid for a well plate is provided. A pin penetrates the lid and projects downwardly into a well of the well plate. An electrical charge is applied to the pin and an electrical charge of opposite polarity is applied to an electrically conductive portion of a corresponding well, generating a small flow of electrical current and corresponding electrical fields within the well. Charged materials, such as DNA, selectably are attracted to the pin and segregated from the liquid sample.

A lid for a well plate, which has pins that penetrate the lid and project downwardly into the wells of the well plate. Thermal energy is applied to the upper end of the pin to regulate the temperature of liquid samples. Ultrasonic energy is applied to the upper end of the pin to sonicate the liquid sample. An electrical charge is applied to the upper end of the pin to attract charged materials, such as DNA, and to selectably segregate charged materials from the liquid sample.

Method and apparatus for manipulating an organic liquid sample

A method of and apparatus for generating a multivariate spectra over a predetermined excitation wavelength region comprising directing light spanning the region at a sample, simultaneously measuring intensities of resulting fluorescence spectra as a function of a plurality of fluorescence wavelengths produced at one or more excitation wavelengths in the region, and producing a multivariate spectra from the intensities, fluorescence wavelengths, and excitation wavelengths.

Simultaneous recording of multispectral fluorescence signatures

A thermal cycling device consisting of a plate containing a plurality of wells to hold liquid and a lid that covers the plate and contains a number of &ldquo;pins&rdquo; that insert into the wells of the plate to control the temperature of the sample in the well. Biological, chemical or other samples are placed into the wells of the plate and the lid is placed on the plate with the pins inserted into or in the proximity of the sample. The lid, the outer surface of which may be copper clad and in direct contract with the pins, is heated or cooled, rapidly and uniformly heating or cooling the biological samples. The temperature of the sample can be rapidly and uniformly cycled and is particularly useful for the amplification of DNA via the polymerase chain reaction.

An apparatus for holding liquid, such as a microtiter plate, in which a plurality of wells are formed. Each of the wells have side walls that intersect in an edge that defines the boundary between adjacent wells. The edge boundary prevents liquid from collecting between the wells, thereby causing all of the liquid applied to the plate to enter one of the wells. The microtiter plate can be formed from a material having a reflectance and/or fluorescence that is optimized for the particular application in which the microtiter plate will be used. Microtiter plates for use in fluorescence measurement applications are made from material having low fluorescence, such as a liquid crystal polymer, while microtiter plates for use in luminescence measurements are made from material having a high reflectance. Microtiter plates for spectrophotometric applications are made with wells having clear bottoms and opaque walls. Such clear bottomed wells can be made by incorporating a photobleachable dye into the plate material so as to render it essentially opaque and then irradiating the bottoms of the wells so as to render them transparent. Such wells can also be made by forming the plate from an essentially transparent material and then irradiating the sidewalls with a beam of light so as to render them essentially opaque.
