The invention provides metal liquid chromatography components with uniformly coated internal surfaces and methods for achieving the same. The invention addresses the problem of corrosion or interference of metal components in the flow path for LC analyses in which the sample interacts with metal ions or surfaces. The invention also alleviates the difficulties in coating very long metal tubes and very small metal channels with an inert, continuous coating that adheres well to metal surfaces. The metal flow path is rendered inert by the coating, and thus compatible with bioanalytical separations, for example, by using a vapor phase deposition process to coat the inner surfaces with a coating that continuously covers all metal surfaces in the flow path.

Liquid chromatography and gas chromatography components with a conformal protective coating on internal surfaces thereof and methods for producing the same are provided. The conformal protective coating is formed via an atomic layer deposition (ALD) process. The components and methods of the present disclosure find use in providing protective coatings for liquid chromatography and gas chromatography components that are compatible with bioanalytical separations and sensitive trace analyses.

Some embodiments of the devices comprise a deglycosylation column for cleaving glycans, an optional cleaning column for removing proteins, a trapping column for enriching glycans, and a separation column for resolving glycans. The devices and methods significantly improve the speed and sensitivity of glycan analysis.

A method for solid state bonding of a plurality of metallic layers and devices made by that method are disclosed. First and second metallic layers are solid state bonded utilizing a protective coating on the non-bonded surfaces that engage the pressure applying appliance to prevent the surfaces from adhering to the pressure applying appliance and to protect the surfaces from imprinting during the bonding process. The invention can be used to fabricate micro-channel devices with smooth outer surfaces and eliminate mold release compounds utilized in conventional bonding procedures.

The present invention relates to an optical detection cell for micro-fluidics. The detection cell provides a first layer, a detection cell layer contacting the first layer, a third layer contacting the detection cell layer, a micro-fluidic chip having a fluidic port and a detection channel defined through the detection cell and being in fluid communication with the fluidic port of the chip, the detection channel serving as a light path for receiving light for detecting a molecule. Methods of detecting molecules and making the detection cell are also disclosed.

Microfluidic device for sample analysis

A polyaryl-ether-ketone (PAEK)-based microfluidic device having an integrated electrospray emitter is disclosed. Bonding of at least one PAEK substrate forming the microfluidic device is accomplished using a solvent-resistant adhesive, such as a polyimide-based adhesive, in combination with an adhesion enhancement treatment. By providing the PAEK-based microfluidic device with an integrated electrospray emitter, efficient and effective analysis of fluid samples is enabled.

The invention described herein provides a mass spectrometry system, having an ion source including an ionization device for producing ions, a collection conduit adjacent to the ionization device for collecting ions produced by the ionization device, a first gas source for supplying gas to desolvate ions produced by the ionization device, a second gas source for supplying gas at a defined flow to the ionization region, and a detector downstream from the ion source for detecting ions produced by the ion source. Apparatus and method for gas flow management

An ion source for an analytical instrument is described. The ion source comprises a capillary tip and counter-electrode interface and a feedback loop control device connected to the capillary tip and counter-electrode interface. The feedback loop control device comprises a transimpedance amplifier, a DC de-coupler, a frequency to voltage converter, a controller, and a voltage-controlled high-voltage power supply that provides a tip to counter-electrode voltage to the capillary tip and counter-electrode interface. The feedback loop control device measures the modulation frequency of ionization currents and provides a feedback adjustment of the tip-to-counter-electrode voltage to maintain ionization efficiency.

A fabrication and adhesion method for a polyaryl-ether-ketone (PAEK) device, such as a microfluidic device, is disclosed. At least one glassy uncrystallized PAEK substrate is heated up to near or above the glass transition temperature to allow the substrate to crystallize from the glass state, while embossing the substrate with patterns. Bonding the PAEK substrate to another substrate is accomplished using a solvent-resistant adhesive, such as a polyimide-based adhesive, in combination with an adhesion enhancement treatment. In certain embodiments, the adhesion enhancement treatment is a plasma treatment or a chemical sulfonation treatment.

A planar extensible structure in a flat planar flex circuit can be extended out of the plane of the circuit by a distance of more than the width of the structure to carry fluids, electrical signals or optical signals into and out of the circuit. The planar extensible structure may be an Archimedes spiral, a parabolic spiral, a polygonal spiral, a non-spiral extensible shape, or other extensible shape. The invention can be used to siphon fluid samples from each well in a multiple-well microtiter plate into a microfluidic manifold for utility in chemical and biochemical analysis. The invention can also be used to allow electrical interconnect between adjacent circuits or circuit boards, and can allow signals carried in optical fibers to be transferred between optical circuits in different planes.
