An electrical connector includes a shell having a mating end and a termination end. The shell has a securing feature configured to secure the shell to a mating connector. The shell has a cavity that extends between the mating end and the termination end. A terminal subassembly includes a dielectric insert that is configured to be held within the cavity of the shell. The dielectric insert is configured to hold terminals such that mating interfaces of the terminals are configured to mate with corresponding terminals of the mating connector and such that termination interfaces of the terminals are configured to be terminated to a cable. The dielectric insert is a modular insert that is configured to hold the terminals when the termination interfaces are flat interfaces and is also configured to hold the terminals when the termination interfaces are crimp interfaces.

Electrical connector

An electrical contact assembly is provided. The assembly includes a contact hood having a body including an axis and an opening extending through the body along the axis. The opening has an inner surface. The contact hood is configured to be received in an opening of a connector housing. At least two protrusions are formed on the inner surface of the contact hood opening. An electrical contact is provided having a body including a contact end and a socket end. The socket end is inserted axially into the opening of the contact hood. The contact end of the electrical contact is configured to extend from a mating end of the connector housing. At least two apertures are formed on the socket end of the electrical contact. The at least two protrusions are received in the at least two apertures to secure the electrical contact within the contact hood.

Contact assembly for an electrical connector

A connector shell includes a frame, a dividing wall and a plurality of connector inserts. The frame surrounds a periphery of the shell. The dividing wall is homogeneously formed with the frame and separates a plurality of recesses. The connector inserts are homogeneously formed with the frame and the dividing wall. The inserts are disposed with one or more of the recesses. Each insert includes a body and a plurality of cavities. Each body is configured to hold a plurality of contacts that protrude from each of a mating and a loading side. The contacts are configured to be mounted to a circuit board in a location proximate to the loading side and to mate with a plurality of other electrical connectors in a location proximate to the mating side.

Connector shell having integrally formed connector inserts

Welding a first body (11) of a first metal which has been plated on one surface thereof with a layer (13) of a second metal comprises the step of vaporizing a portion of said layer. This is done by directing a first pulsed laser beam (17) at the layer (13), the first pulsed laser beam having a first relatively high peak power and a first relatively low pulse duration. The vaporizing results in exposure of a portion of the first body (11). Thereafter, part of the first body is melted by directing a second pulsed laser beam (20) at the exposed portion of the first body, said second pulsed laser beam having a second peak power smaller than the first peak power and a second pulse duration longer than said first pulse duration. By using the same laser (18) in a two-step process, first to vaporize a portion of the plating, such as gold plating on Kovar, and thereafter using the same laser for making the weld, one can avoid a microcracking problem in a manner that is quick, simple and convenient.
