A large volume preconcentrator device for concentrating analytes. A housing accepts an analyte vapor flow, and a plurality of collection surfaces are disposed within the housing. A selectively actuatable heater is disposed on each of the plurality of collection surfaces. At least one selectively actuatable damper is disposed within the housing for selectively restricting a collection flow.

Large volume analyte preconcentrator

Embodiments of the invention provide for three-terminal pressure sensors ('3-TPS'), a method of measuring a pressure with a 3-TPS, and a method of manufacturing a 3-TPS. In some embodiments, the 3-TPS includes a semiconducting layer with cavity and a 3-TPS element having at least one piezoresistive layer overlapping at least a portion of the cavity and oriented at an angle selected to provide a desired sensitivity for the 3-TPS. The method of measuring a pressure with a 3-TPS is performed with a 3-TPS that includes an input terminal, first and second output terminals, and a 3-TPS element, the 3-TPS element overlapping at least a portion of a cavity at a predetermined angle. The method comprises providing an input signal to the input terminal of the 3-TPS, determining a difference between two output signals from the respective output terminals of the 3-TPS, and correlating the determined difference to a pressure.

Single element three terminal piezoresistive pressure sensor

An analyte collection system device includes an active area that includes a plurality of perforations extending therethrough. The plurality of perforations are arranged to permit passage of an analyte fluid flow through the microscale plate. A heating element is provided for heating the active area, and a thermal distribution layer is disposed over at least a portion of the active area. For cooling the active area at or below an ambient temperature, an active cooler is provided.

Actively cooled vapor preconcentrator

In the invention, a collection device includes a flow through micro scale plate arranged to collect analyte. The plate includes holes, and sorbent coating on contact surfaces of the plate. The holes pass analyte fluid flow, for example analyte vapor so that fluid flow for collection may be generally perpendicular to the sorbent plate. Preferred embodiment plates include an integrated heater trace. In preferred embodiments, a high substantially perpendicular flow is used for collection and concentration, and during desorption and delivery a low substantially parallel flow is used. The low flow is selected to meet constraints of a detector system.

Micro scale flow through sorbent plate collection device

An interchangeable preconcentrator assembly comprises an outer housing and an inner housing defining a chamber. A biased urging member is held at least partially within the outer housing and slidably biased toward a surface of the inner housing. When the biased urging member is at least partially retracted, a space is defined between the urging member and the surface of the inner housing for accommodating at least one preconcentrator chip. A continuous fluid flow path is defined through the outer housing and through the space. The interchangeable preconcentrator assembly may further comprise at least one modular preconcentrator carriage.

Interchangeable preconcentrator connector assembly

An embodiment of the invention is directed to a capillary electrophoresis apparatus comprising a plurality of separation micro-channels. A sample loading channel communicates with each of the plurality of separation channels. A driver circuit comprising a plurality of electrodes is configured to induce an electric field across each of the plurality of separation channels sufficient to cause analytes in the samples to migrate along each of the channels. The system further comprises a plurality of detectors configured to detect the analytes.

Capillary electrophoresis systems and methods

A three-dimensional micro-electro-mechanical-systems (MEMS) capacitive bending and axial strain sensor capacitor is described. Two independent comb structures, incorporating suspended polysilicon interdigitated fingers, are fabricated simultaneously on a substrate that can displace independently of each other while attached to a substrate undergoing bending or axial deformation. A change in spacing between the interdigitated fingers will output a change in capacitance of the sensor and is the primary mode of operation of the device. On the bottom and to the end of each comb structure, a glass pad is attached to the comb structure to allow for ample surface area for affixing the sensor to a substrate. During fabrication, tethers are used to connect each comb structure to maintain equal spacing between the fingers before attachment to the substrate. After attachment, the tethers are broken to allow independent movement of each comb structure.

Strain sensing system

The present invention is a capillary electrophoresis device, comprising a substrate; a first channel in the substrate, and having a buffer arm and a detection arm; a second channel in the substrate intersecting the first channel, and having a sample arm and a waste arm; a buffer reservoir in fluid communication with the buffer arm; a waste reservoir in fluid communication with the waste arm; a sample reservoir in fluid communication with the sample arm; and a detection reservoir in fluid communication with the detection arm. The detection arm and the buffer arm are of substantially equal length.

Capillary electrophoresis-electrochemical detection microchip device and supporting circuits

An embodiment of the invention provides a MEMS cantilever strain sensor. Capacitor plates in a MEMS device of the invention are carried on cantilevered opposing micro-scale plates separated by a micro-scale gap under an unstrained condition. At least one of the micro-scale plates may be attached to a substrate or forms a substrate, which may be part of a monitored system. When a load is applied to the substrate, distal ends of the opposing cantilevered micro-scale plates become further separated, resulting in a change of capacitance. The change of capacitance is proportional to a load and therefore is an indication of the strain. Electrodes may be integrated into the strain sensor to provide a connection to measurement circuitry, for example. Sensors of the invention also provide for telemetric communication using radio frequency (RF) energy and can be interrogated without a power supply to the sensor.

MEMS capacitive cantilever strain sensor, devices, and formation methods

A radiation detector includes a substrate having a cavity defined therein, an anode surface positioned in the bottom of the cavity and a cathode positioned adjacent the cavity opening. A drift electrode is juxtaposed over the substrate opposite the cavity and defines a region containing a gaseous medium. As ionized charge pairs are established in the gaseous medium due to radiation provided by an external radiation source, electrons drift toward the anode under the influence of a first electric field established between the anode and drift electrode. Thereafter, the electron undergoes avalanche multiplication with the gaseous medium in an avalanche region defined by a second intense electric field established between the anode and cathode. The structure of the present invention provides an electric field gradient geometry which permits optimal design of the avalanche region geometry, and which further minimizes photon feedback from the cathode.

Radiation detector based on charge amplification in a gaseous medium

An optical imaging system includes an array of optical imaging devices each comprising a device for providing charge amplification in a gaseous medium. A preferred embodiment of such a charge amplification device includes a substrate having a cavity defined therein, an anode surface positioned in the bottom of the cavity and a cathode positioned adjacent the cavity opening. A drift electrode is juxtaposed over the substrate opposite the cavity and defines a region containing a gaseous medium. As ionized charge pairs are established in the gaseous medium due to radiation provided by an external radiation source, electrons are attracted toward the anode where they undergo avalanche multiplication with the gaseous medium under the influence of an intense electric field established between the anode and cathode. As a result of the avalanche process, the gaseous medium within the avalanche region emits photons, predominately in the UV region, which are collected by the substrate and provided to a photon detector coupled thereto. The substrate is preferably provided with a wavelength shifting material operable to shift the UV light to the visible region, where it is thereafter imaged by the photon detector using, for example, conventional CCD camera technology.

Optical imaging system utilizing a charge amplification device

A self-propelled portable watercraft, including a deck and hull, an engine, and a waterjet propulsion system, capable of operating while a supply of air is unavailable. The air substitute, consisting of a mixture of oxidizing gas and recycled exhaust gas, is delivered to the engine through a self-actuated control valve. In addition, the waterjet propulsion system is equipped with an intake port at the terminus of a narrow, elongated, hollow downward extension of the hull. The purpose of the extension being to minimize the occurrence of a loss of thrust which can result when the craft is vertically displaced above the surface of the surrounding water.
