A loop powered process instrument comprises a control system measuring a process variable and developing a measurement signal representing the process variable. A two-wire circuit, for connection to a remote power source using a two-wire process loop, controls current on the loop in accordance with the measurement signal. A power supply with galvanic isolation is connected to the two-wire circuit and the control system to isolate the two-wire circuit from the control system. The power supply receives power from the two-wire process loop and supplies power to the control system. The power supply comprises a voltage regulator receiving loop power and developing a regulated output voltage. A current switching circuit receives the regulated output voltage and drives a primary of a transformer. A secondary of the transformer is coupled to the control system. A voltage shift control includes an isolator circuit driven by the control system for controlling voltage supplied by the voltage regulator.

Through air radar level transmitter with galvanic isolation

A loop powered process instrument comprises a control system including a control circuit, a modem circuit and a loop output circuit. The control circuit measures a process variable and develops a measurement signal representing the process variable and includes a loop control circuit and a communication circuit. The modem circuit is operatively connected to the communication circuit and includes a modulation input port and a modulation output port. The loop output circuit receives a measurement signal from the loop control circuit and is connected to the modulation input port. A two-wire circuit is for connection to a remote power source using a two-wire process loop. A power supply with isolation is connected to the two-wire circuit and the loop output circuit to isolate the two-wire circuit from the control system. The power supply receives power from the two-wire process loop and supplies power to the control system and draws loop current on the two-wire process loop in accordance with the measurement signal and provides the modulation output on the loop current. A bypass circuit with isolation is connected between the two-wire circuit and the modem circuit modulation input port for providing input modulated signals to the modem circuit bypassing the power supply.

A loop powered process instrument comprises a control system measuring a process variable and developing a measurement signal representing the process variable. An output circuit, for connection to a remote power source using a two-wire process loop, controls current on the loop in accordance with the measurement signal. A power supply is connected to the output circuit and the control system. The power supply receives power from the two wire process loop and supplies power to the control system. The power supply comprises a voltage regulator receiving loop power and developing a regulated output voltage and an adjustable shunt regulator controlling voltage supplied to the voltage regulator.

A magnetostrictive sensing instrument comprises a probe including a tube having a near end and a distal end. A magnetostrictive wire is in the tube. An adaptor at the tube near end includes a probe circuit comprising a drive circuit for the magnetostrictive wire, a pickup sensor, a preamplifier and a memory circuit storing calibration parameters for the probe. An instrument housing includes a control circuit. A connector is operatively disposed between the instrument housing and the adaptor and comprises electrical conductors for connecting the control circuit to the probe circuit.

A measurement instrument comprises a sensor circuit comprising a drive circuit for transmitting a pulse signal at a target of interest and a receive circuit receiving reflected echoes of the pulse signal and developing an analog signal representative of the reflected echoes. An analog processing circuit is operatively coupled to the sensor circuit for receiving the analog signal and comprising a gate for selectively transferring the analog signal to a comparator that compares the gated analog signal to a select threshold level to develop a data signal representative of location of the target of interest. A programmed digital processing circuit is operatively coupled to the sensor circuit and the analog processing circuit and comprises a measurement module to control the drive circuit and evaluate the data signal to determine material location. An echo processing module periodically evaluates a digital representation of the analog signal to determine an expected window time and expected amplitude of a reflected echo representing the target of interest and developing a gate control signal to control the gate based on expected window time and developing the select threshold level based on the expected amplitude.

Hybrid level measurement system

A process measurement instrument with target rejection comprises a sensor circuit. The sensor circuit comprises a drive circuit for transmitting a pulse signal at a target of interest and a receive circuit receiving reflected echoes of the pulse signal and developing an analog receive signal representative of the reflected echoes. An analog processing circuit receives the analog receive signal and comprises a summer subtracting an analog target rejection signal from the analog receive signal to develop a corrected receive signal. A programmed digital processing circuit is operatively coupled to the analog processing circuit and comprises a memory storing target rejection signal value data representing false target reflections and developing the analog target rejection signal for transfer to the analog processing circuit.

Process measurement instrument with target rejection

An ultrasonic point level measurement instrument comprises a measurement circuit and a transducer. The transducer transmits and receives acoustic signals under control of the measurement circuit. An improvement in the transducer comprises a transducer housing including a pair of spaced apart legs to define a gap therebetween. Each leg includes an interior cavity. A pair of crystal assemblies each comprise a crystal mounted to a circuit board. The circuit board includes conduction paths for connection between the crystal and a terminal pad. Each crystal assembly is received in the interior cavity of one of the legs with the circuit board spacing the crystal from walls of the leg. A pair of cables are each connected between the measurement circuit and the terminal pad of one of the crystal assemblies so that the measurement circuit detects presence of a material in the gap.

Ultrasonic sensor assembly and method

A guided wave radar measurement instrument comprises a probe defining a guided wave radar transmission line. A pulse circuit is connected to the probe for generating a very fast stream of pulses on the transmission line and receiving reflected pulses returned on the transmission line. The reflected pulses represent a characteristic of a material being measured. An equivalent time sampling circuit is connected to the pulse circuit operable to sample reflected pulses to build a time multiplied picture of the reflected pulses and comprises a ramp generator circuit generating a saw tooth ramp signal used to selectively delay sampling reflected pulses to build the time multiplied picture. In one aspect of the instrument, the saw tooth ramp signal has a controlled ramp start for each cycle and retrace at an end of the cycle. A processing circuit is connected to the equivalent time sampling circuit for selectively controlling ramp start for each cycle and measuring round trip travel time for a pulse from the pulse circuit.

A thermal dispersion flow/level switch includes a dual element probe assembly. Each element comprises an RTD sensor. The two RTD's are driven at different currents at a fixed ratio so that one RTD is self heated to establish a temperature differential. When a process product comes in contact with the heated sensor, the thermal differential is diminished. The differential is set to determine presence or absence of a process media and provide a change of contact state responsive thereto. In a flow application under no flow or low flow conditions, the RTDs will stabilize with a sufficient temperature differential which decreases in response to higher flow rates.

A two-wire ultrasonic transmitter senses level of a material and controls current of power supplied thereto to a magnitude representing sensed level The transmitter comprises a transducer mounted in proximity to a material, the level of which is being sensed. A power supply circuit receives power for operating the instrument. A drive circuit is connected to the transducer and the power supply circuit and periodically energizes the transducer to transmit an energy pulse to be reflected off of a surface of the sensed material. An amplifier circuit is connected to the transducer and develops an analog signal having a magnitude corresponding to reflected energy received by the transducer. A control circuit is operatively coupled to the drive circuit and the amplifier circuit and determines time difference between a first time when the drive circuit energizes the transducer and a second time when the analog signal is above the threshold, the time difference representing level, and energizes the amplifier circuit for a select minimum time duration commencing subsequent to energization of the transducer and terminating after receipt of a return echo pulse A current control circuit is coupled to the control circuit for controlling current received by the power supply circuit to a magnitude representing sensed level.

Two-wire ultrasonic transmitter

An ultrasonic level detector includes a transducer for generating and receiving bursts of sonic energy at a surface to locate the position of the surface. In response to receiving a burst of energy reflected from the surface, the transducer generates an electrical signal, which is then supplied to a variable gain amplifier. After amplification, the electrical signal is supplied to a comparator and a peak detector. The comparator generates a timing signal upon the electrical signal exceeding a threshold. A window generator circuit generates a receive window that controls whether the electrical signal is supplied to the comparator and the magnitude of the threshold on the comparator. The peak detector determines the maximum amplitude of the electrical signal, which may be used to vary the amplifier gain and the number of pulses included in an excitation signal which drives the transducer. Upon receipt of the timing signal, a microprocessor determines the distance between the transducer and the detected surface.
