A novel junction design was developed for use with in-line combiner networks to minimize electrical length between the resonators being combined and to optimize coupling. It consists of a combiner comprising a plurality of cavity resonators coupled to a combining mechanism. The combining mechanism is placed outside of each resonator a prescribed distance above the ground plane. Combiner pairs are created by connecting two cavities to each other using quarter-wave lines. The central combiner pair is directly connected to the output connector through a common port. The quarter-wave junctions not directly connected to the output connector are then connected to the output port through half-wavelength lines. Iris or aperture coupling is controlled by a sliding cover that is adjusted using a free-rotating screw and is secured with locking screws to ensure good electrical and RF grounding.

An improved antenna system for use at high frequencies such as cellular communication and PCS frequencies, having a steerable, multi co-linear array antenna in which the number of radiating elements per co-linear array increases monotonically from the periphery of the antenna to the middle of the antenna, and wherein the antenna is connected to a Butler matrix feed network, thereby providing steerability of the radiation pattern associated with the antenna. The improved antenna system achieves significantly lower sidelobe generation as compared to antenna systems using multiple co-linear arrays of radiating elements in which the number of radiating elements per co-linear array is constant. The Butler matrix feed network is implemented via a microstrip fabricated printed circuit board without crossovers.

A coaxial resonance cavity of either the fingered or unfingered variety having a metal heat conducting barbell shaped structure inside the movable tuning plunger to conduct heat from the inner surface of the movable plunger to the inner surface of the fixed stub or directly to the shield to provide for a heat conductive path to the shield to carry heat away from the inner plunger. The barbell is an integral structure machined from stock aluminum, but resembles three right circular cylinders butting end to circular end. The upper cylinder has a diameter appropriate to maintain tight contact with the stub. The lower cylinder has a smaller diameter, appropriate to maintain contact with the movable plunger. The central cylinder has a diameter which is sufficiently small to avoid contact with any portion of friction buttons located on the side of the plunger to serve as a spacer between the plunger and the stub, especially such portion of the button which may extend entirely through the plunger for support of the button.

Tem coaxial resonator

A dielectric resonance electromagnetic filter for selection of a resonance frequency of a high frequency electromagnetic wave having the dielectric resonator attached directly to the shield. The filter is tunable using a tuning cylinder which moves through a cavity in the center of the resonator. The tuning cylinder is hollow and is designed to expand thermally during heatup to counter thermal changes in the resonance frequency. The tuning cylinder may be metal or dielectric material or may have sections of both materials. A shield geometry has been described which enables filter clusters to occupy a minimum volume.
