A method of reducing the liberation of dust particles from a dry particulate matter is disclosed. The particulate matter is transferred to a location where it falls through the air, a small amount of water is introduced onto the particles of material in the material stream, the water being added in the amount of at least 1.01 % and no more than 1% of the weight of the dry particulate matter. The wetted particles contact each other and are distributed generally uniformally throughout the remainder of the material. The delivery of the wetted particles is delayed by a period of at least one second. A smooth path is provided for the material stream after the uniform distribution and prior to discharge at the discharge location.

Suppression of food dusts and the like

By separating the woody ring portion of corncobs from the pith and chaff portions a lost circulation additive for drilling muds is produced which does not appreciably increase the yield point of the drilling mud. Improved particle size distributions for lost circulation additives is also given and claimed which permits low concentrations of the additive to produce seals withstanding 1000 psig.

Organo silane coupling agents having at least two hydrolyzable silane groups are disclosed. Glass fibers coated with these organo silanes are suitable for reinforcing cementitious materials.

A method of preparing glass fibers having a surface enriched by zirconium dioxide thereon, comprising the steps of: applying an aqueous solution of zirconyl carbonate to the surface of the glass fibers, keeping the fibers wetted under ambient conditions for a period of time to effect ion exchange with water extractable ions in the surface of the glass, and evaporate the water to leave the coated glass fibers. The coated glass fibers are especially suited for reinforcing cementitious materials.

We have found that if we add a polyhydric phenolic compound such as resorcinol to monohydric phenolic resin/cement systems, we can shorten the gel time sufficiently to use the systems in producing walls. The walls generally are cylindrical and serve to confine a liquid. These systems are especially good for producing large diameter, continuous pipe.

Wall construction

We have developed molding compounds from cement in combination with a nylon or polyester resin. We form the resin in the presence of the cement. We can use these molding compounds to form molded articles which have good fire resistance.

Molding compounds

Halogen and amine groups attached to silicon are replaced by organocarboxylate groups. The replacement is carried out with the reactants dissolved in pentane. Substantially quantitative yields are obtained, and the reaction can be preceded or followed by other reactions carried out in the pentane media. For example, trichlorosilane is reacted with an olefinic unsaturate containing halogen in a first stage reaction. Thereafter the product of the reaction is reacted with an organic acid so that the chlorines attached to the silicon are then replaced by the organocarboxylate groups in a second stage reaction. The remaining halogen is then replaced by amine in a third stage reaction, all in the pentane media. All this is accomplished without an HCl scavenger.

We have developed a polyvinyl chloride foam with a smooth surface and uniform cell size. The foams also are resilient and abrasion resistant, making them especially suited for use in carpeting materials. To do this, we add along chain silane or epoxide to the foam.

PVC foams

Bundles of glass fibers for use as reinforcement for elastomeric materials in which individual glass fibers are sized with a composition consisting essentially of an aqueous emulsion of a polyolefin, and the resulting coated glass fibers are formed into bundles which are impregnated with a blend of a resorcinol-aldehyde resin and an elastomer without subjecting the coated glass fibers to temperatures above 120.degree. F prior to impregnation.

A composition for use in the treatment of glass fibers and glass fibers treated therewith, wherein the composition is formulated to include an organo silicon compound in the form of an epoxy silane blended with an organo silicon compound containing a beta-chloroalkoxy group. The glass fibers treated with the composition can be used in the reinforcement of thermosetting resins and elastomeric materials.

Complex organo silicon compounds

We have developed new and useful epoxy resins which have excellent fire resistance. We prepare these resins by using phosphorus trihalides or phosphorus oxyhalides to cure conventional epoxy resins.

A composition for use in the treatment of glass fibers to promote a strong bonding relationship between glass fibers and plastics and elastomeric materials comprising a silanized butadiene polymer which has been reacted with a halosilane and the product reacted with an epoxide to replace the halogen groups of the silane with beta-haloalkoxy groups.

We have molded articles from molding compounds containing a thermosetting resin, at least one cement, and at least one silane coupling agent. These molding compounds exhibit improved strength properties and can be used to form shingles, appliances such as bathtubs, and coatings.

Moulding compounds

Organo silicon compounds prepared by reaction of a dialkyl hydrazine of the formula ##EQU1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each alkyl with an epoxy silane such as an epoxy silane of the formula ##EQU2## or an epoxy silane of the formula ##SPC1## Where y is an integer and R.sub.5 is alkyl. The organo silicon compounds described can be employed in the treatment of glass fibers to improve the bonding relationship between glass fibers and resins or elastomeric materials.
