A surgical access device includes a cannula body and a fixation mechanism. The cannula body includes a housing, and an elongated portion extending distally from the housing and defining a longitudinal axis. The fixation mechanism includes a flange, a fixation sleeve, and a proximal sleeve. The flange is rotatable about the longitudinal axis. The fixation sleeve extends distally from the flange and radially surrounds a portion of the elongated portion of the cannula body. The proximal sleeve extends distally from the flange and radially surrounds a proximal portion of the fixation sleeve. Rotation of the flange causes a radially-expandable portion of the fixation sleeve to move between a first position defining a first gap between the radially-expandable portion and the elongated portion, and a second position defining a second, greater, gap between the radially-expandable portion and the elongated portion.

A cannula assembly is utilized during a minimally invasive surgery to provide sealed access of a surgical instrument to an insufflated body cavity. The cannula assembly includes a cannula sleeve and a suction cup that is adjustably positionable on the cannula sleeve. The suction cup is formed of a compressible material such that when the suction cup is compressed or pressed against tissue by a clinician, the suction cup creates suction and engages tissue in a sealing relation.

A surgical access device includes a cannula body, an anchor, and a first suture retention mechanism. The cannula body includes a housing and an elongated portion extending distally from the housing. The elongated portion defines a longitudinal axis and a channel extending therethrough. The first suture retention mechanism extends laterally from the anchor. A suture-receiving channel is defined between a portion of the suture retention mechanism and a portion of the anchor.

A surgical access assembly includes a cannula including an elongated shaft and a retention anchor movable position along the elongated shaft. The retention anchor includes an annular body and a wiper disposed at a distal end of the annular body. The annular body includes a proximally-facing surface, a distally-facing surface, an outer side surface, and an inner side surface. The inner side surface defines a channel for reception and passage of the elongated shaft therethrough and the proximally-facing surface defines a proximal opening into the channel. The wiper extends radially inwardly of the inner side surface and defines a distal opening into the channel for establishing a sealed relation about the elongated shaft. The distal opening has a smaller diameter than the proximal opening.

A method of forming a balloon for a surgical access device includes positioning a molding material into a channel defined in a first mold half of a mold and mounting a second mold half onto the first mold half to cover the channel and form a cavity within the mold. The first and second mold halves each includes vent holes extending therethrough that are in fluid communication with the cavity. The method also includes expanding the molding material to conform to the shape of the cavity to form a balloon including protrusions extending radially outwardly therefrom. The protrusions are formed by engagement of the molding material with the vent holes.

A surgical access assembly includes a cannula including an elongated shaft having a proximal end portion including an anchor inflation port and a distal end portion including an expandable anchor. The elongated shaft includes an inner tube and an outer tube disposed over the inner tube. The inner tube includes at least one groove defined in an outer surface thereof that forms an inflation channel with an inner surface of the outer tube. The inflation channel is in communication with the anchor inflation port and the expandable anchor.

A surgical access device includes a cannula body, an obturator assembly, and a fixation mechanism. The fixation mechanism includes at least one wing, a first plurality of magnets disposed on an elongated portion of the obturator assembly, and a second plurality of magnets disposed on the at least one wing. The at least one wing is coupled to an elongated portion of the cannula body and is movable between a first position where the at least one wing is parallel to a longitudinal axis, and a second position where the at least one wing is disposed at an angle to the longitudinal axis. A predetermined amount of translation of the elongated portion of the obturator assembly within a channel of the elongated portion of the cannula body causes the at least one wing to move from the first position to the second position.

A surgical access device has a housing and a tubular member extending from the housing. A collar includes proximal and distal walls along with first and second sidewalls. The first and second sidewalls have a circular configuration and join the proximal and distal walls. The collar is repositionable along a length of the tubular member. A cavity is defined between the proximal and distal walls and the first and second sidewalls. The cavity is configured to store a quantity of a fluid therein. Pores extend through the distal wall and each pore is configured to allow a predetermined quantity of the fluid to flow therethrough. A port is disposed through the proximal wall and is in fluid communication with the cavity. The port is configured to allow the fluid to be introduced into the cavity.

A surgical access device including a cannula body and an anchor is disclosed. The cannula body includes a housing, and an elongated portion extending distally from the housing. The elongated portion defines a longitudinal axis and defines a channel extending therethrough. The anchor is disposed in mechanical cooperation with the elongated portion of the cannula body and is longitudinally translatable relative to the elongated portion. The anchor defines an aperture and includes a ratchet mechanism configured to selectively lock a size of the aperture.

A surgical access device including a cannula body, a fixation mechanism, and an illumination mechanism is disclosed. The fixation mechanism includes a collar, a sleeve, an expandable member, and a distal ring. The illumination mechanism includes at least one light disposed on the expandable member, and a switch. Distal translation of the collar relative to an elongated portion of the cannula body causes the expandable member to move from a first position defining a first gap between a mid-portion of the expandable member and the elongated portion of the cannula body, to a second position defining a second gap between the mid-portion of the expandable member and the elongated portion of the cannula body, the second gap being greater than the first gap.

Access assemblies includes an instrument valve housing and a valve assembly disposed within the cavity of the instrument valve housing. The valve assembly includes a guard assembly, a seal assembly disposed adjacent to the guard assembly, and a centering mechanism for maintaining the seal assembly and guard assembly centered within a cavity of the instrument valve. In embodiments, the seal assembly includes a plurality of seal sections that are movable from an unfolded configuration to folded configuration in which the seal assembly forms a hexagonal member defining an opening to facilitate sealed passage of a surgical instrument. The seal sections may include a tapered inner edge for engaging a surgical instrument inserted through the instrument valve housing.

Seals for surgical access assemblies

A surgical access assembly includes a cannula and a retention anchor including an annular body and a washer secured to the annular body. The annular body includes an inner side surface defining an opening therethrough, and the washer includes an inner terminal edge defining an opening therethrough that is aligned with the opening of the annular body. The elongated shaft of the cannula extends through the openings. The washer is transitionable between a first configuration in which the inner terminal edge of the washer is coincident with or disposed radially outwardly of the inner side surface of the annular body so that the retention anchor is slidable along the elongated shaft, and a second configuration in which the inner terminal edge of the washer extends radially inwardly of the inner side surface of the annular body and engages the elongated shaft to fix the retention anchor to the elongated shaft.

A surgical access device includes a cannula body and a fixation mechanism. The fixation mechanism includes a collar, a driver, a distal ring, a proximal ring, and a plurality of petals. The driver extends distally from the collar, and the distal ring is operatively engaged with a distal portion of the driver. The proximal ring at least partially surrounds an elongated portion of the cannula body and is disposed proximally of the distal ring. The plurality of petals extends proximally from the distal ring and is longitudinally translatable relative to the proximal ring. Longitudinal translation of the collar causes the plurality of petals to move between a first position defining a first gap between a proximal end of the plurality of petals and the elongated portion, and a second position defining a second, greater gap between the proximal end of the plurality of petals and the elongated portion.

A surgical access device includes a cannula, an instrument housing coupled to the cannula, a port coupled to the instrument housing, and a valve disposed within the port. The cannula includes an elongated shaft defining an access lumen and an inflation lumen therethrough. The port includes an inflation channel and an insufflation channel defined therethrough. The inflation channel is in fluid communication with the inflation lumen of the cannula and the insufflation channel is in fluid communication with the access lumen of the cannula. The valve is movable within the port between an inflation position in which a passageway defined through the valve is aligned with the inflation channel of the port, and an insufflation position in which the passageway of the valve is aligned with the insufflation channel of the port.
