A duplicate suppression protocol is introduced in order to suppress duplicate entries from appearing in a list of available network resources. With the duplicate suppression protocol of the present invention, a computer that wishes to query for network resources also asks for duplicate suppression information from the responding network resources. The duplicate suppression information for a particular network resource specifies identifiers associated with that network resource for various protocols. Thus, if a particular network resource responds to more than one network resource request from a single requesting entity, that requesting entity will be able to locate duplicate network resource information. Thus, a single unified list of network resources available for various different protocols may be presented with all duplicate network resources removed.

Method and arrangement for suppressing duplicate network resources

A display mode can be selected by identifying a plurality of display modes supported by a media client, wherein the plurality of display modes comprise safe modes; sequentially selecting a display mode from the plurality of display modes, wherein the plurality of display modes are ordered according to one or more of resolution, timing, and popularity; generating an output signal based on the selected display mode, wherein the generated output signal is provided to a display device; and selectively repeating the sequential selection of a display mode and generating an output signal based on the selected display mode until an input is received from a user indicating that the selected display mode is compatible with the display device. Further, the media client can be configured to utilize the selected display mode. Additionally, the plurality of display modes can be identified based on extended display identification data from the display device.

Configuring an operating display mode further can comprise determining that the received user input confirms the selected display mode and configuring the media client to set the selected display mode as the operating display mode. Further, generating a user interface can comprise presenting a display timer indicating a time remaining until a display mode change.

Method and arrangement for supressing duplicate network resources

A computer-implemented method and apparatus for identifying and locating computer network services. The invention gives an application the ability to search for network services in a manner independent of the network communication protocol used by the network. The invention can thus operate as a layer of abstraction between the Transport and Network Layers and the Application Layer of the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) Reference Model of network architecture and suite of protocols. The invention gives the client application the ability to browse for network services based on the type of service (such as remote file access, mail, Web, domain name registration, etc.), rather than having to know the name or location of the service or the underlying network communication protocol used by the service. Some of the contemplated service name identification protocols used to find the requested types of services include Internet-related protocols such as Domain Name Service (DNS) and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), as well as Service Location Protocol (SLP), running on top of the Transport Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

The present invention, generally speaking, provides a powerful yet easy to use electronic publishing tool for information providers and online service operators. The electronic publishing tool allows information providers to manage the content they provide to online services. It also reduces the effort required by operations staff of online services to support a growing number of information providers. Finally, the electronic publishing tool allows content to be captured from information providers (and, by extension, subscribers) so that it can be published onto a variety of platforms with minimal additional effort. For example information, in addition to or in lieu of being published on an online service, may be published on CD through a facility such as AppleLink CD (AppleLink CD allows a portion of the 'static' content of an online service such as AppleLink to be published and distributed in CD form, with the result that the content is infinitely reusable without incurring connect charges.) Furthermore, information previously published on one online service may be published on one or more other online services, or information may be published on several online services at the same time. A number of potentially 'thorny' problems of distributed database systems are solved in an elegant and efficient manner. The first issue involves synchronizing different copies of an item on machines that are not continuously linked at which each copy may be changed independently. Rather than attempting to formulate a set of synchronization policies generally applicable to all items in all instances, synchronization policies are moved from the database engine to the items themselves. The second issue involves lifetime--knowing, given a complex set of interrelationship of items, when an item may be safely deleted. This problem is addressed by providing an interested party mechanism whereby items may 'express interest' in each other. When no item is interested in a particular item, that item may safely 'go away.'
