A strengthened cover glass or glass-ceramic sheet or article as well as processes and systems for making the strengthened glass or glass-ceramic sheet or article is provided for use in consumer electronic devices. The process comprises cooling the cover glass sheet by non-contact thermal conduction for sufficiently long to fix a surface compression and central tension of the sheet. The process results in thermally strengthened cover glass sheets for use in or on consumer electronic products.

Thermally strengthened consumer electronic glass and related systems and methods

A method of plugging channels of a honeycomb body and a honeycomb body including plugged channels. The method includes applying a shear force to a plugging mixture including a plurality of inorganic particles, clay, and a liquid vehicle to alter the viscosity of the plugging mixture from a first viscosity prior to the vibrating to a second viscosity which is less than the first viscosity. A honeycomb body is placed into contact with the plugging mixture such that a portion of the plugging mixture having the second viscosity flows into the plurality of channels. Application of the shear force is stopped or reduced to increase the viscosity of the portion of the plugging mixture in the plurality of channels to greater than the first viscosity.

Methods of plugging a honeycomb body

A method of plugging a honeycomb body is disclosed herein, the method comprising: contacting a first end of the honeycomb body comprising a plurality of channels with a light curable sealing mixture such that an infiltrate of the light curable sealing mixture flows into the plurality of channels proximate the first end; emitting a light toward a first portion of the infiltrate within the plurality channels of the filter; and curing the first portion of the infiltrate within the channels with the light to form a plurality of seals.

Selective masking and plugging of honeycomb bodies

A coated glass article and of a system and method for forming a coated glass article are provided. The process includes applying a first coating precursor material to the first surface of the glass article and supporting the glass article via a gas bearing. The process includes heating the glass article and the coating precursor material to above a glass transition temperature of the glass article while the glass article is supported by the gas bearing such that during heating, a property of the first coating precursor material changes forming a coating layer on the first surface of the glass article from the first precursor material. The high temperature and/or non-contact coating formation may form a coating layer with one or more new physical properties, such as a deep diffusion layer within the glass, and may form highly consistent coatings on multiple sides of the glass.

Embodiments of thermally and chemically strengthened glass-based articles are disclosed. In one or more embodiments, the glass-based articles may include a first surface and a second surface opposing the first surface defining a thickness (t), a first CS region comprising a concentration of a metal oxide that is both non-zero and varies along a portion of the thickness, and a second CS region being substantially free of the metal oxide of the first CS region, the second CS region extending from the first surface to a depth of compression of about 0.17&#x2022;t or greater. In one or more embodiments, the first surface is flat to 100 &#x3bc;m total indicator run-out (TIR) along any 50 mm or less profile of the first surface. Methods of strengthening glass sheets are also disclosed, along with consumer electronic products, laminates and vehicles including the same are also disclosed.

In some embodiments, methods of supporting an object can comprise engaging a surface of the object with the outer surface of the cylindrical rod wherein the first cylindrical rod supports a weight of the object while the first cylindrical rod is supported by the first fluid cushion and the second fluid cushion.

The die () includes: a feed hole plate () comprising an input surface (A), an opposing output surface (B), and feed holes () configured to guide a batch material from the input surface (A) to the output surface (B); and a pin assembly () comprising pins () disposed on the feed hole plate (). At least one of the pins includes: a tail (); a head () connected to the tail () and comprising alignment surfaces () configured to align the pins (), flow surfaces () disposed between the alignment surfaces (), and a tapered portion () comprising a contact surface () adhered to the output surface (B) of the feed hole plate (); and a first groove () disposed between the head () and the tail (). In the pin assembly (), the alignment surfaces () contact adjacent pins () to align the pins (), such that discharge slots are at least partially defined by the tails () of the pins ().

Extrusion dies and methods and apparatuses for forming the same

An in situ inspection system and method to inspect a honeycomb body () skin in a skinning system. The inspection system includes a line illuminator () to generate a line illumination on the skin () perpendicular to an axial direction () of the honeycomb body travel, and a detector () to detect the line illumination scattered from the skin () and generate a signal based on the detected line illumination. A controller () is configured to receive the signal generated by the detector (), compare the received signal to a previously stored defect free signal in real-time, and control at least one skinning process parameter based on the comparison. The method includes in situ inspecting the skin () and controlling at least one skinning process parameter based on the inspection. In the method, the in situ inspection includes illuminating a line of the skin () perpendicular to the axial direction () and detecting the illuminated line scattered from the skin ().

Skinning of ceramic honeycomb bodies

A skinning apparatus and a method of skinning a porous ceramic. The apparatus includes an axial skinning manifold. The axial skinning manifold includes a curved adaptive pipe to flow cement in a circumferential direction from an inlet at a first position and through an adaptive opening along an inner bend of the curve through a land channel disposed along the inner bend. The land channel emits the cement at a constant velocity from a land opening extending proximate the first position to a second position spaced apart from the first position. The land outlet emits cement at a constant velocity around the outer periphery of the porous ceramic to dispose a uniform skin thereon as the porous ceramic moves axially relative to the land outlet.

Apparatus and method for skinning articles

A system for delivering and applying a flowable mixture to an article (-) is disclosed. The system includes a mixture delivery system () and a skinning system (). The mixture delivery system () includes a mixer () configured to mix a dry material and a fluid to produce the flowable mixture, and a pump () configured to pump the flowable mixture to a delivery line. A method of controlling the temperature of an optical fiber is provided that includes the steps of: providing an energy transfer member configured to accept or provide thermal energy, the energy transfer member defines an energy transfer surface; passing an optical fiber proximate the energy transfer member such that a gap is defined between the optical fiber and the energy transfer surface; and transferring thermal energy between the optical fiber and the energy transfer member via conduction across the gap.
