The technology disclosed herein provides a memory blade including a plurality of fabric switches configured to receive commands from a plurality of host clients, an address decoder and tracker circuit communicatively connected to the fabric switches and configured to determine the source of commands received at the fabric switches an aggregator crossbar configured to provide bandwidth aggregation between host clients and a plurality of memory modules; and a buffer module configured to couple the commands from the plurality of host clients with the plurality of memory modules.

Fault-tolerant memory appliance

A data storage blade includes a plurality of data storage cartridges, with each of the plurality of data storage cartridges comprising at least one data storage medium. The data storage blade also includes shared drive electronics (SDE) external to the plurality of data storage cartridges. The SDE is configured to control data access operations on different data storage cartridges of the plurality of data storage cartridges. The data storage blade further includes a controller-override mechanism activatable to disable communication between the SDE and the plurality of data storage cartridges.

A retention assembly includes a first retention member with a first set of ribs and a second set of ribs. The first set of ribs are positioned to form slots, which are shaped to receive data storage devices. The first set of ribs are arranged to separate adjacent data storage devices and have a first length. The second set of ribs extend into respective slots to form air channels within the slots, and the second set of ribs have a second length that is shorter than the first length.

A data storage device includes a primary storage media, a drive storage controller electrically coupled to media recording electronics and a controller-override mechanism. A data storage enclosure can employ an acoustic baffle for the purpose of reducing performance degradation in a data storage device, such as a rotating medium hard disk drive. A storage enclosure may house a plurality of data storage devices and at least one cooling feature. One or more acoustic baffles may be positioned between the at least one cooling feature and the plurality of data storage devices. The acoustic baffle can separate a first sound pressure region that is proximal the at least one cooling feature from a second sound pressure region that is proximal the plurality of data storage devices.

An apparatus includes a guide system having first and second opposing guide walls with guide features extending from the first and second guide walls. The guide features support a data storage device when the data storage device is positioned between the first and the second opposing guide walls. The apparatus also includes a slidable member operably coupled to the first guide wall. The slidable member includes a top portion having retention features and a bottom portion having a lifting member. The lifting member enables lifting of the data storage device by the slidable member when the data storage device is within the guide system. The slidable member further includes a bent latch-release portion between the top portion and the bottom portion. The bent latch-release portion biases the data storage device towards the second guide wall.

Carrierless drive insertion, retention and removal system

A storage device sled for mounting a storage device within a chassis is provided. The storage device sled includes a bezel, which includes a first portion that is stationary relative to a storage device, a second portion vertically captured within the first portion and configured to slide between unlatching and latching positions, and a spring configured to push the latch outwardly from the bezel. The second portion includes a finger-movable member, a latch, and a horizontal biasing feature adjacent to the latch and configured to move in concert with the latch. The storage device sled also includes first and second longitudinal members, each orthogonally coupled to opposite ends of the bezel first portion and each coupled to opposite sides of the storage device. When the storage device is installed in the chassis, the horizontal biasing feature exerts force against a first chassis interior side surface and biases the storage device sled against a second chassis interior side surface.

Self-biasing storage device sled

A method for reducing susceptibility to vibration for a storage device is provided. The method includes running a performance test to the storage device over a predetermined range of vibration frequencies and determining there is a frequency of concern for the storage device. The method also includes establishing resonant frequencies of the storage device and determining if a resonant frequency of the storage device corresponds to the frequency of concern. If a resonant frequency corresponds to the frequency of concern, then the method includes reducing stiffness of a plurality of mounting members coupled to the storage device and repeating running the performance test, determining there is a frequency of concern, determining a resonant frequency overlaps a frequency of concern, and reducing stiffness of the plurality of mounting members until one of there are no frequencies of concern and a resonant frequency does not correspond to a frequency of concern.

Method and apparatus for mitigating induced shock and vibration

An enclosure has a sidewall with a step that results in an upper part of the sidewall extending over a slide mounting region. A backplane is located at a base of the enclosure and is configured to receive a plurality of data storage drives. A circuit carrier extends from the backplane to the step in the side of the enclosure. The circuit carrier has one or more connectors proximate an upper surface of the step and is configured to receive one or more expansion modules that expand a functionality of the backplane.
