A durable pet tag having machine readable indicia. A multiple layer label is pre-assembled and applied and embedded into a metal substrate for durability. A two sided pet tag having machine readable indicia on a first side and human readable indicia on a second side is provided, the human readable indicia being stamped into the side of the substrate opposite the machine readable printed sheet so that a single pet tag is provided with machine readable data to allow finders of lost pets to retrieve owner information using a smart phone and the database accessible with the pet tag machine readable indicia. The pet tag also has human readable indicia to comply with legal requirements.

A land mobile radio system receives paging messages communicated via a paging service communication protocol, decodes the paging messages to identify respective target recipients of the paging messages and determines whether the target recipients are members of a user group. If a target recipient is a member of the user group, a communication unit (e.g., radio or console) of the target recipient is identified, the message is converted to an appropriate protocol (e.g., a wireless protocol) and sent to the communication unit.

Smart card module and method of assembling the same

Detection of a locomotive or other vehicle is enhanced by transmitting an RF alert signal from the vehicle when the vehicle approaches a heightened alert area such as a railroad crossing. The RF alert signal is received by communication unit(s) carried by pedestrian(s) or residing in vehicle(s) approaching the heightened alert area, thereby providing an alert that supplements train whistles, gates, horns or other warning mechanisms known in the art. The RF alert signal may also be transmitted to infrastructure devices such as logging devices. In one embodiment, the RF alert signal is transmitted from a locomotive upon detecting operation of a train whistle associated with the locomotive and/or coincident to receiving an external alert signal or automatic vehicle location (AVL) information indicating that the locomotive is near a heightened alert area.

An improved punch out pattern for a hot melt tape used in smartcard manufacture. The hot melt tape is provided with punch out channels that direct the overflow of conductive adhesive away from the surface of the hot melt tape. In a preferred embodiment, the punch out channels are dimensioned to direct the overflow away from one another and toward a module receiving cavity formed in the smartcard body. In an alternate embodiment where it may not be feasible to direct overflow toward the overmold receiving cavity without affecting the electrical or mechanical performance of the smartcard, the punch out channels are dimensioned to direct overflow away from one another and along the periphery of the hot melt tape area. In either scenario, the channels do not interfere with module adhesion and, by virtue of the channeling of overfill matter, direct the conductive adhesive away from other connections in close vicinity and thus avoid the possibility of shorting.

Apparatus (100) for controlling the volume of a speaker (109) by restricting the volume level of the speaker (109) at power on. The apparatus (100) includes a microprocessor controller (103) for operating the speaker (109) at a first volume level prior to powering off. Upon power on, the microprocessor controller (103) determines a statistic based on a time of the received power-on command, and restricts the volume level of the speaker (109) based on the statistic.

A method (202) for etching photolithographically produced quartz crystal blanks for singulation. In a first step (202), a quartz wafer is plated on both sides with metal and subsequently coated on both sides with photoresist. In a second step (204), the photoresist is patterned and developed and the metal layer on one side is etched through to form a narrow channel in the quartz defining a perimeter of a quartz blank. In a third step (206), the quartz channel is preferentially etched partially into the wafer along parallel atomic planes to provide a mechanically weak junction between the quartz wafer and the blanks to be singulated. In a fourth step (208), the photoresist layers are stripped from the quartz wafer. In a final step (210), the quartz blank is cleaved substantially along the bottom of the quartz channel to singulate the crystal blanks from the quartz wafer.

Method for etching photolithographically produced quartz crystal blanks

A method for etching (200) photolithographically produced quartz crystal blanks for singulation. First, a quartz wafer is plated on both sides with metal and subsequently coated on both sides with photoresist (202). Second, the photoresist is patterned and developed and the metal layers etched to define the periphery of a quartz blank with a narrow quartz channel exposed between the blank to be singulated and the parent quartz wafer (204). Third, the quartz channel is preferentially etched partially into the wafer along parallel atomic planes to provide a mechanically weak junction between the quartz wafer and the blank to be singulated, while the periphery around the remainder of the quartz blank is etched completely through the parent quartz wafer (206). Fourth, the photoresist layers are stripped from the quartz wafer (208). Finally, the quartz blank is cleaved substantially along the bottom of the quartz channel to singulate the crystal blank from the wafer (210).

A method of rotating a non-temperature compensated Bechmann curve of a quartz strip. The method includes the steps of determining (102) whether a crystallographic orientation of an AT cut quartz strip is within a desired specification; selecting (104) a predetermined nominal electrode coverage having a nominal electrode width for an in-specification AT cut quartz strip; and tuning (106) an out of specification crystallographic orientation, by: adjusting (108) the electrode width with respect to the nominal electrode width, to bring the out-of-specification crystallographic orientation of an out-of-specification AT cut crystal quartz to within a desired specification having an in-specification Bechmann curve with an inflection point; and rotating (110) an out-of-specification Bechmann curve about the inflection point to substantially approach the desired in-specification Bechmann curve.
