Systems and methods are provided for estimating the total base number of used oil in an engine. The systems and methods can involve characterizing the sulfur content and at least one other element content of the oil both before introduction into the engine and after passing through an engine cylinder during combustion. Depending on the aspect, a total base number of the oil prior to use can also be measured, or the total base number before use can be estimated based on the at least one element content.

Determination of total base number in lubricants

Provided are marine lubricating oils including from 15 to 95 wt % of a Group III base stock having a kinematic viscosity at 100 deg. C. of 4 to 12 cSt, 0.5 to 55 wt % of cobase stock having a kinematic viscosity at 100 deg. C. of 29 to 1000 cSt, 0.1 to 2.0 wt % of a molydithiocarbamate friction modifier, 0.1 to 2.0 wt % of a zinc dithiocarbamate anti-wear additive, and 2 to 30 wt % of other lubricating oil additives. The cobase stock is selected from the group consisting of a Group I, a Group IV, a Group V and combinations thereof. Also provided are methods of making and using the marine lubricating oils.

Marine lubricating oils and method of making and use thereof

A method for improving deposit control, while maintaining or improving demulsibility performance, in an engine lubricated with a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil that has a particular phenate/carboxylate detergent mixture present in a particular amount in the formulated oil. A lubricating engine oil having a composition including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component; and a phenate/carboxylate detergent mixture as a minor component. The lubricating oils of this disclosure are useful in marine crankcase systems, in particular, marine system oil applications for two-stroke marine diesel engines.

The present invention is directed to a method for improving the fuel efficiency of large low and medium speed engine oil compositions by reducing the traction coefficient of the oil by formulating the oil using a blend consisting of one or more Group I base oils having a kinematic viscosity at 100&#xb0; C. of from 2 to less than 12 mm/s in combination with a Group IV base oil having a kinematic viscosity of at least 38, the difference in kinematic viscosity between the Group I and Group IV oils in the blend being at least 30 mm/s in combination with a detergent.

The present invention is directed to a method for improving the fuel efficiency of engine oil compositions by reducing the traction coefficient of the oil by formulating the oil using a blend of one or more first base stock(s) selected from Group II base stock, Group III base stock and Group IV base stock and a second base stock selected from polyisobutylene (PIB) and, preferably, additized with a detergent.

A device and a method for real time optimizing engine lubricating oil properties in response to actual engine operating conditions. the present invention is a method that comprises measuring, directly or indirectly, a system parameter of interest near a location of interest, calculating from said parameter(s) or input(s) the amount of a secondary fluid selected from performance enhancer(s), additional base lubricant, alternatively formulated lubricant or diluent that need be added to the base lubricant; and supplementing said base lubricant with said secondary fluid before introducing the combination into said monitored location.
