A wainscoting system for covering a portion of a wall, wherein the wainscoting system includes a lower rail secured to the wall, a chair rail assembly attached to the wall and spaced apart from the lower rail, a plurality of decorative panels extending between the lower rail and chair rail assembly, and a batten positioned adjacent decorative panels. The batten includes a compound tongue formed into a first side edge thereof and a compound tongue formed into an opposing second side edge thereof. Each decorative panel includes a compound tongue formed into a first side edge thereof and a compound groove formed into an opposing second side edge thereof. The compound tongue of each decorative panel corresponds and is engageable with the compound groove of the batten, and the compound groove of each decorative panel corresponds and is engageable with the compound tongue of the batten.

A wall panel system that includes a plurality of rails positioned substantially parallel to each other, a plurality of panels wherein each panel extends between two adjacent rails, and a cross spline is positioned between each pair of panels and extending substantially perpendicular to adjacent rails is provided. The rails are attachable to a wall support structure. The rails receive the panels and maintain the panels in a spaced-apart relationship. Each panel includes a peripheral edge having a groove formed into the peripheral edge such that the groove is continuous and extends about the entire peripheral edge of the panel. Both the rails and the cross spline include a tongue that is insertable into the groove of each panel to allow the rails and cross splines to be in engagement with the panels.

The invention comprises a system for constructing a finished convex or concave curved wall of any desired radius beyond a specified minimum. The wall is constructed of pre-finished rectangular panels retained on a sub-wall structure in horizontal rows and vertical columns. The panels are retained on the sub-wall structure with vertical rails at their vertical edges and retainer clips spaced along their horizontal edges. The panels are slotted at their rear face to provide rigidity in the vertical direction and flexibility in the horizontal direction. The horizontal edges of the panels are kerfed to receive the retainer clips and flexible splice strips that conform to the curvature of the wall and align and space a panel with the panel immediately above it. Clips attaching vertical edges of the panels to the rails allow the associated areas of the panels to align tangentially with the curvature of the wall.
