A thrust reverser system for a gas turbine engine includes a support structure, a transcowl, and an actuator. The transcowl is mounted on the support structure and is axially translatable between a stowed position and a deployed position. The actuator is coupled to the transcowl and the support structure, and is configured to supply an actuation force to the transcowl to thereby move the transcowl between the stowed and deployed positions. The actuator includes an actuator housing, a screw, a nut, a rod end, and a tension rod. The tension rod is engaged by the nut when the transcowl is in the deployed position and is engaged by the rod end when the transcowl is in the stowed position, whereby actuator loads, in both the deployed and stowed positions, are transmitted through the tension rod to the support structure.

Aircraft thrust reverser system with alternate reverse thrust load path

A thrust reverser system for a gas turbine engine includes a support structure, a transcowl, a door, a main actuator, and an assist actuator. The transcowl is mounted on the support structure and is axially translatable between a stowed position and a deployed position. The door is pivotally coupled to the support structure and is rotatable between at least a first position and a second position when the transcowl translates between the stowed position and the deployed position, respectively. The main actuator is configured to supply an actuation force to the transcowl to thereby move the transcowl between the stowed and deployed positions. The assist actuator is coupled to the door, and is configured to supply an actuation assist force to the door and, upon rotation of the door to an intermediate position between the first position and the second position, to commence load sharing with the main actuator.

Aircraft thrust reverser with out-of-plane assisting actuator

Actuator assembly includes a housing assembly, a ball screw, a ball nut, and a lock. The ball screw is rotationally mounted on and extends from the housing assembly, is coupled to receive an actuator drive torque, and is configured, upon receipt thereof, to rotate. The ball nut is rotationally supported on the ball screw and is configured, in response to rotation of the ball screw, to translate thereon between a stowed position and a deployed position. The lock is disposed at least partially within the housing assembly and is configured to move between a lock position and an unlock position. The lock prevents the ball nut from translating out of the stowed position when the lock is in the lock position and the ball nut is in the stowed position.

Thrust reverser actuator with primary lock

A system and method for monitoring a thrust reverser system are provided. The embodiments described herein utilize sensors located proximate locks comprising a thrust reverser locking system. The provided system and method detect deflection and displacement proximate the locks to determine when individual locks have failed.

System and method for monitoring a translating cowl thrust reverser

An aircraft engine nacelle door operating system locking manual drive unit includes a housing, an input drive shaft, an output drive shaft, a lock shaft, and a lock spring. The input drive shaft, the output drive shaft, and the lock shaft are all rotationally mounted in the housing. The output drive shaft continuously engages and mates with the input drive shaft, and he lock shaft extends at least partially into and engages the input drive shaft. The lock shaft is movable between a lock position, in which it engages and mates with the output drive shaft, and an unlock position, in it is disengaged from the output drive shaft. The lock spring supplies a bias force to the lock shaft that urges the lock shaft toward the lock position.

Locking manual drive unit for aircraft engine nacelle door operating system

An actuator includes a housing assembly, an actuator shaft, an actuation member, and an anti-rotation rod. The actuator shaft is rotationally mounted in the housing assembly, is adapted to receive a drive torque, and is configured, upon receipt of the drive torque, to rotate. The actuation member is mounted on the actuator shaft, and is configured to translate in response to rotation of the actuator shaft. The anti-rotation rod is coupled to the actuator housing and extends therefrom. The anti-rotation is rod configured to at least selectively engage, and thereby prevent rotation of, the actuation member.

Actuator including handling-proof position feedback mechanism

A system and method are provided for controlling the movement of an aircraft engine cowl door between an open position and a closed position. The system includes an electric motor, at least one actuator, and an electrically operated brake. The actuator is coupled to the motor and is operable to move the cowl door between the closed and the open position. The electrically operated brake is coupled to the electric motor and the at least one actuator and is configured, upon being energized, to supply a unidirectional resisting torque load to the electric motor that does not prevent motor rotation.

Aircraft engine cowl door movement control system and method

An aircraft thrust reverser actuation system includes a plurality of actuator assemblies that are each configured, upon receipt of a drive torque, to move to a position. The rotary hydraulic motor is coupled to each of the actuator assemblies and is configured, upon receipt of hydraulic fluid, to rotate and supply the drive torque to each of the actuator assemblies. The control valve is in fluid communication with the rotary hydraulic motor and is configured, upon receipt of electrical current, to move to a valve position based on the magnitude of the received electrical current, to thereby control the direction and flow of hydraulic fluid to the hydraulic motor. The valve control is configured, upon receipt of thrust reverser commands, to supply the electrical current to the control valve and selectively vary the magnitude of the electrical current based on the positions of the actuator assemblies.

Rotary hydraulic motor driven hybrid thrust reverser actuation system with end-of-stroke snubbing

Embodiments of translating nut mechanism having enhanced lubrication features are provided, as are embodiments of variable bleed valve systems employing translating nut mechanism in the form of bidirectional stop mechanisms. In one embodiment, the translating nut mechanism comprises a housing containing a pool of grease or another lubricant. A screw shaft is mounted in the housing for rotation about a working axis. A translating nut is threadably mounted to the screw shaft and moves linearly along the working axis with rotation of the screw shaft. A first lubricant distribution feature, such as a grease paddle, projects from the translating nut into the lubricant pool. The first lubricant distribution feature moves through the lubricant pool to distribute lubricant within the translating nut mechanism as the translating nut moves along the working axis.

Translating nut mechanisms having enhanced lubrication features and variable bleed valve systems employing the same

A VAFN system is provided for a fan case of an engine. The system includes a motor; a gearbox; an actuator; a nozzle; and a drive coupling extending between the gearbox and the actuator and configured to transmit the mechanical torque from the motor to the actuator. The drive coupling includes an external tube extending from a first one of the gearbox or the actuator, the external tube defining first and second slots extending in a longitudinal direction, and an internal tube extending from a second one of the gearbox or the actuator and at least partially extending within the external tube, the internal tube including a pin with first and second ends respectively positioned within the first and second slots such that the internal tube is configured to translate within the external tube and to be rotatably coupled to the external tube.

Variable area fan nozzle systems with improved drive couplings

A self-snubbing hydraulic actuation system includes a hydraulic motor, a component actuator, a control valve, a valve actuator, and a variable resistance device. The hydraulic motor is configured, upon receipt of hydraulic fluid, to rotate and supply a drive torque. The component actuator is configured, upon receipt of drive torque from the motor, to translate to a position. The control valve is movable to a plurality of valve positions to thereby control hydraulic fluid flow rate to the hydraulic motor. The valve actuator is coupled to the control valve and is adapted to receive electrical current and to move the control valve to a valve position based on the magnitude of the received electrical current. The variable resistance device is configured, based on component actuator position, to selectively vary the magnitude of the electrical current received by the valve actuator.

Self-snubbing hydraulic actuation system

A fluid-powered thrust reverser actuation speed control system and method are provided. A drive fluid is supplied to a fluid-powered drive mechanism that is coupled to a thrust reverser movable component to thereby move the thrust reverser movable component at a first movement speed. A determination is made as to when the thrust reverser movable component attains a predetermined position. In response to the thrust reverser movable component attaining the predetermined position, the drive fluid supplied to the fluid-powered drive mechanism is controlled to thereby move the thrust reverser movable component at a second movement speed that is less than the first movement speed.

Fluid-powered thrust reverser actuation system speed control

A bi-directional locking ring assembly is provided comprising a housing and a gear having a plurality of teeth. The gear is coupled to the housing to rotate in opposite directions about a rotational axis. A pin is also coupled to the housing and has an apex configured to travel along a line that does not pass through the rotational axis of the gear. The pin is configured to translate between (1) a disengaged position wherein the gear is free to rotate, and (2) an engaged position wherein the apex resides between two of the plurality of teeth to prevent rotation of the gear in both rotational directions. A pin actuator is coupled to the housing and configured to engage the pin to selectively lock the pin in the engaged position.
