A self-organizing backhaul radio (SOBR) and related arrangements are disclosed. A 'primary' link between an first SOBR enabled radio and a second SOBR radio includes a secondary transmission link, referred to as a signature control channel (SCC), as a spread spectrum modulated signal embedded within and transmitted simultaneously with the primary link. The SCC transmissions from the first SOBR radio may be utilized by other SOBR enabled radios to determine an interference level to or from the first SOBR radio's primary link. The SCC transmission may be utilized to allow transmit beam forming between SOBR-enabled radios without damaging other friendly SOBR radios within the propagation distance of the transmitted signals based upon the detection of the SCC transmissions.

Self organizing backhaul radio

An intelligent backhaul radio is disclosed, which can operate by zero division duplexing for use in PTP or PMP topologies, providing for significant spectrum usage benefits among other benefits. Specific system architectures and structures to enable active cancellation of multiple transmit signals at multiple receivers within a MIMO radio are disclosed. Further disclosed aspects include the adaptive optimization of cancellation parameters or coefficients.

Zero division duplexing mimo radio with adaptable RF and/or baseband cancellation

'Tiered' groups of devices (tiered service radios) and/or licenses associated with the devices or users so as to provide a hieratical set of interference protection mechanisms for members of each tier of service are disclosed. Point-to-point and point-to-multipoint data links for any communication application, including wireless backhaul applications, are also disclosed. Exemplary systems, devices, and methods disclosed herein allow for the efficient operation of such a tiered service. Interference protection among tiered service devices belonging to one or more tiers of the service, from other devices within the same tier of service, or devices of other tiers of service, is disclosed. Identification of other devices of the same or differing tiers of service, and interference mitigation between other tiered service devices based upon intercommunication between the devices, and/or via a central registry database, are also disclosed.

Advanced backhaul services

Directive gain antenna elements implemented with an aperture-fed patch array antenna assembly are described. A feed network for the aperture-fed patch array may include offset apertures and may also include meandering feed lines. Scalable aperture shapes and orientations that can be used with antennas operating at any frequency and with dual orthogonal polarizations are also disclosed. Directive gain antenna elements implemented with arrays of orthogonal reflected dipoles are also described with optimal feed networks and parasitic elements to achieve desired directive gain characteristics. Such arrayed dipole antennas feature dual orthogonal polarizations with assembly tabs that lower cost and improve reliability. Backhaul radios that incorporate said antennas are also disclosed.

Aperture-fed, stacked-patch antenna assembly

An intelligent backhaul radio that has an advanced antenna system for use in PTP or PMP topologies. The advanced antenna system includes a plurality of directional antenna arrays, wherein each directional antenna array includes a plurality of directional antenna sub-arrays, and wherein each directional antenna sub-array includes a plurality of directional antenna elements. At least one of the plurality of directional antenna arrays includes at least one first directional antenna sub-array, said first directional antenna sub-array including a first number of directional antenna elements. At least one of the plurality of directional antenna arrays includes at least one second directional antenna sub-array, said second directional antenna sub-array including a second number of directional antenna elements. The first number is different than the second number.

Radio with spatially-offset directional antenna sub-arrays

A backhaul radio is disclosed that operates in multipath propagation environments such as obstructed LOS conditions with uncoordinated interference sources in the same operating band. Such a backhaul radio may use an advanced ARQ protocol, which uses an ACK_MAP, constructed by a combination of implicit and explicit signaling, and performs a combination of proactive and reactive retransmissions.

Backhaul radio with advanced error recovery

A backhaul radio is disclosed that operates in multipath propagation environments such as obstructed LOS conditions with uncoordinated interference sources in the same operating band. Such a backhaul radio may use adaptive beamforming and sample alignment at the transmitter to enhance the link performance. Such backhaul radios may communicate with each other to compute and apply optimal beamforming parameters for a particular propagation environment through a closed-loop feedback mechanism.

A fixed wireless access radio is disclosed that is compact, light and low power for street level mounting, operates at 100 Mb/s or higher at ranges of 300 m or longer in obstructed LOS conditions with low latencies of 5 ms or less, can support PTP and PMP topologies, uses radio spectrum resources efficiently and does not require precise physical antenna alignment.

Radio with antenna array and multiple RF bands

Enhancement of wireless Channel Order and rank (ECHO) systems and ECHO repeater devices for enhancement of a wireless propagation channel for point to point or point to multipoint radio configurations are disclosed. The enhancement may be used for MIMO communications channels. Aspects support a richer multipath environment to increase the rank of the channel propagation matrix and/or to increase the magnitude of the coefficients of the propagation matrix between two or more radios. Such enhancement is applicable to backhaul radios in terms of increased range or in the number of supportable information streams. The installation, provisioning, optimization, control, monitoring, and adaptation of such devices within a network of backhaul radios is also disclosed. Wireless links and control between IBR and ECHO devices, and between ECHO devices and other ECHO devices, are also disclosed.

Embedded control signaling for self-organizing wireless backhaul radio and systems

A hybrid band intelligent backhaul radio (HB-IBR) is disclosed that is a combination of two radios operating in different bands. Embodiments include a dual radio configuration wherein a first radio operates in a non-line of sight (NLOS) radio link configuration and a second ancillary radio operates in a near line of sight or line of sight configuration (n)LOS. For example, the HB-IBR may have an Intelligent Backhaul Radio (IBR) operating in the non-line of sight mode of operation within the 5.8 GHz unlicensed band, and have an ancillary radio link operating in the FCC part 101 E band of operation at 60 GHz. A common medium access control (MAC) block may be utilized between the dual radios.

Hybrid band radio with multiple antenna arrays

A intelligent backhaul system is disclosed to manage and control multiple intelligent backhaul radios within a geographic zone. The intelligent backhaul system includes multiple intelligent backhaul radios (IBRs) that are able to function in both obstructed and unobstructed line of sight propagation conditions, one or more intelligent backhaul controllers (IBCs) connecting the IBRs with other network elements, and an intelligent backhaul management system (IBMS). The IBMS may include a private and/or public server and/or agents in one or more IBRs or IBCs.

Method for deploying a backhaul radio with antenna array

An intelligent backhaul system is disclosed for deployment in the presence of existing radio systems. A backhaul system for co-channel deployment with existing licensed and unlicensed wireless networks, including conventional cellular backhaul radios, Common Carrier Fixed Point-to-Point Microwave Service, Private Operational Fixed Point-to-Point Microwave Service and other FCC 47 C.F.R. &#xa7; 101 licensed microwave networks is disclosed. Processing and network elements to manage and control the deployment and management of backhaul of radios that connect remote edge access networks to core networks in a geographic zone which co-exist with such existing systems or other sources of interference within a radio environment are also disclosed.
