1-[di(4-octylphenyl)aminomethyl]tolutriazole is prepared in a mineral oil and blended with a liquid alkylated diphenylamine. The liquid product shows increased storage stability with respect to crystallization of the 1-[di(4-octylphenyl)aminomethyl]tolutriazole when the amine is added. This blend product can be stored for a prolonged period of time, and then utilized in a lubricant composition as an antioxidant and corrosion inhibitor.

Method for reducing crystallization of 1-[di(4-octylphenyl)aminomethyl]tolutriazole

A lubricant composition with improved antioxidant capability is provided by way of an additive composition containing a metal free sulfur-containing compound, an aromatic amine, and a hindered amine. Particularly effective metal-free sulfur-containing compounds include ashless dithiocarbamates, such as methylenebis(dibutyldithiocarbamate), and sulfurized fatty acids.

A novel molybdenum dithiocarbamate composition is produced by preparing a di-tridecylamine (DTDA) intermediate from a butylene feedstock comprising greater than 50% 2-butylene, and preparing a molybdenum dithiocarbamate composition from the DTDA intermediate. The resulting molybdenum dithiocarbamate composition are according to formula (1), wherein Rto Rare C-Cisoalkyl groups, and X represents oxygen and/or sulfur atoms, and Rto Rcomprise, on average, greater than 98% C:

1-[Di(4-octylphenyl)aminomethyl]tolutriazole is prepared in a mineral oil wherein the reaction also contains between 0.1 and 5% by weight of a polyacrylate polymer dissolved in a mineral oil. The liquid product shows increased storage stability with respect to crystallization of the 1-[di(4-octylphenyl)aminomethyl]tolutriazole when the polyacrylate polymer is added during the reaction to prepare the 1-[Di(4-octylphenyl)aminomethyl]tolutriazole. This product can be utilized in a lubricant composition as an antioxidant and corrosion inhibitor.

Novel molybdenum compounds are prepared by reacting a hindered amine with a molybdenum source, in the presence of one of (a) water, (b) a diol and water, and (c) the reaction product of a fatty oil and a multifunctional amine, and water. Lubricant compositions containing these new compounds are more stabilized against oxidation and have improved friction reducing properties. Synergy is observed when the novel compounds are combined with a diaryl amine in a lubricant composition.

A novel hydroxyalkyldithiocarbamate borate ester compound is presented according to the formula: where R=alkyl Cto C; R'=H or COR; R&#x2033;=(CH)OH where m=1 to 8, or alkyl Cto C; n=1 to 8. The borate ester compound is prepared by reacting boric acid with a novel hydroxyalkyldithiocarbamate ester compound according to the formula, and optionally with an alcohol: where R, R&#x2032;, R&#x2033; and n are as above. The hydroxyalkyldithiocarbamate ester is prepared by reacting a hydroxyalkylamine with CS, and an acrylate or maleate compound. A lubricating composition is based on a major amount of lubricating oil and a minor amount of the hydroxyalkyldithiocarbamate borate ester.

A processes for preparing highly sulfurized molybdenum oxysulfide dithiocarbamates (Mo DTCs) by reacting: [A] a tertiary amine, [B] a hexavalent molybdenum compound, [C] carbon disulfide, [D] water, and [E] a secondary amine are disclosed. The Mo DTCs can be efficiently produced with high sulfur contents and in high yields with low corrosive action and excellent friction properties. The produced Mo DTCs can be used in either grease or lubricating oils as friction modifiers, antiwear agents, extreme pressure agents and antioxidants.
