An interposer for a curved detector. In some embodiments a system includes a curved array photodetector; a first readout integrated circuit, the first readout integrated circuit being substantially flat; and an interposer, between the photodetector and the first readout integrated circuit. The photodetector and the first readout integrated circuit may each have a plurality of electrical contacts. The interposer may include a first conductor connecting a first contact, of the plurality of electrical contacts of the photodetector, and a second contact, of the plurality of electrical contacts of the first readout integrated circuit.

A self-sanitizing surface structure configured to selectively refract light, a method of fabricating a self-sanitizing surface configured to selectively refract light, and a method of decontaminating a surface using selectively refracted light. A waveguide including a support layer below a propagating layer is positioned over a substrate as a self-sanitizing layer. In the absence of a contaminant or residue on the waveguide, UV light injected into the propagating layer is constrained within the propagating layer due to total internal reflection. When a residue is present on the self-sanitizing surface structure, light may be selectively refracted at or near the interface with the residue along the side of the waveguide to destroy the residue. The self-sanitizing surface structure may be configured is to refract a suitable amount of UV light in response to a particular type of residue or application.

Chip-scale mid-IR scanning frequency modulated coherent ladar receiver

A flexible, printable antenna for automotive radar. The antenna can be printed onto a thin, flexible substrate, and thus can be bent to conform to a vehicle body surface with compound curvature. The antenna can be mounted to the interior of a body surface such as a bumper fascia, where it cannot be seen but can transmit radar signals afield. The antenna can also be mounted to and blended into the exterior of an inconspicuous body surface, or can be made transparent and mounted to the interior or exterior of a glass surface. The antenna includes an artificial impedance surface which is tailored based on the three-dimensional shape of the surface to which the antenna is mounted and the desired radar wave pattern. The antenna can be used for automotive collision avoidance applications using 22-29 GHz or 76-81 GHz radar, and has a large aperture to support high angular resolution of radar data.

A waveguide assembly for a use with, for example, a microwave receiver. The waveguide assembly includes: a waveguide; a tapered structure disposed within the waveguide, the tapered structure tapering in thickness from a first end with a zero height to a second end where the tapered structure has a height which nearly fills, but does not completely fill, the waveguide, to thereby define a modulator receiving space between the tapered structure and an adjacent wall of said waveguide. The second end of the tapered structure is preferably disposed adjacent an open circuited end of the waveguide. An electro-optic modulator is disposed on a dielectric substrate, the dielectric substrate being disposed at least partially within the modulator receiving space and the electro-optic modulator being disposed so that it is located, in use, at an antinode of a standing wave of the waveguide assembly.

A method of and apparatus for modulating an optical carrier by an incident electromagnetic field. The electromagnetic field propagates in a dielectric-filled transverse electromagnetic waveguide, At least one slice of an electro-optic material is disposed in the dielectric-filled transverse electromagnetic waveguide, the electro-optic material in the dielectric-filled transverse electromagnetic waveguide having at least one optical waveguide therein which has at least a major portion thereof guiding light in a direction orthogonal with respect to a direction in which the dielectric-filled transverse electromagnetic waveguide guides the incident electromagnetic field. Light is caused to propagate in the at least one optical waveguide in the at least one slice of an electro-optic material in the dielectric-filled transverse electromagnetic waveguide for modulation by the incident electromagnetic field.

Microwave receiver front-end assembly and array

An optoelectronic-RF device has at least one optical modulator/sensor comprising at least two cascaded optical-waveguide gratings and at least one non-grating optical waveguide segment interconnecting the at least two cascaded optical-waveguide gratings, with at least one optical waveguide segment interconnecting the at least two cascaded optical-waveguide gratings via the at least one non-grating optical waveguide segment. An RF waveguide is provided for propagating an RF electric field, the at least one optical modulator/sensor being disposed in and forming a portion of the RF waveguide with light propagating through the cascaded optical-waveguide gratings in a direction that is perpendicular to a direction of propagation of the RF electric field in the RF waveguide.
