System and method for remote set-up and adjustment of peripherals

A floatable flood detector has a watertight housing that carries internally a wireless transmitter and a fluid sensor. In the presence of sensed fluid, an alarm message can be transmitted by the transmitter to a displaced monitoring unit. The sensor has a portion exposed to the fluid of interest outside of the housing. The antenna is carried, at least at a fluid level, relative to the floating housing.

A security system may include a home security system that is connected to a remote monitoring service as well as a portable security device that can travel with an individual when they are away from home. The portable security device may communicate with the same monitoring service as the home security system, and may in fact be linked to the same user account as that used for their home security system. The home security system may thus be extended to cover a remote location. In some cases, occupants of an individual's home may be notified via the home security system of alert conditions detected by the portable security device at the remote location. Likewise, occupants of the remote location may be notified via the portable security device of alert conditions detected in the home by the home security system.

A modular water leakage detector includes a housing that carries a plurality of water leakage sensors, an electrical water shutoff valve, and circuitry coupled thereto. In response to sensing water leakage, the circuitry actuates the valve to shut off a water supply. Detectors can communicate alarm indicating signals directly with one another. The detectors can include a wireless transmitter and communicate with a displaced alarm monitoring system.

A method for using a security system to monitor a secured area is provided. The method includes a first processor of the security system providing a status of the security system, including an active status output signal and a disarmed status output signal, a video system monitoring the secured area by capturing and locally saving images, and a second processor of the video system activating one or more video cameras of the video system monitoring an interior space of the secured area upon receipt of the active status output signal and deactivating the one or more video cameras upon receipt of the disarmed status output signal.

A method of adjusting a sensitivity of an acoustic detector. The acoustic detector receives a signal from a remote device. The signal embodies an operating instruction for the acoustic detector. The signal is decoded into an operating instruction for the acoustic detector. The sensitivity of the acoustic detector is adjusted according to the operating instruction. The acoustic detector can increase or decrease the sensitivity. After the sensitivity is adjusted, the acoustic detector sends a confirmation of the adjustment to the user.

A tamper detection apparatus includes a housing defining an internal cavity. A sensing device embodied as a microphone is positioned within the internal cavity of the housing, which may also be a protective grommet. A conductive element spans the internal cavity and is positioned in front of the microphone. The conductive element initiates a fault signal when a specified electrical condition is met to indicate a tampering or an attempted tampering with the microphone.

The noise output triggers a video camera to record in the area of the glass break detector. If a noise is detected by the one or more microphones, the video camera points to a direction of the noise by determining the time of arrival of the noise, and the camera begins to record.

An error condition, fault, defect, obstruction, or defective arrangement of viewing angle is determined in a target security device, such as a motion sensor. A plurality of times a fault is detected in a first security device arranged to sense activity in a first zone, the target security device being arranged to sense activity in a second zone overlapping with the first zone; and the error condition may be determined in the target security device when fault in the target security device is not detected for the plurality of times. The second zone may overlap substantially all of the first zone. The first security device may be a door security sensor, a gate security sensor, a keypad or a motion detector. When the first security device is a keypad or user interface, the fault may be an arm or disarm command or an arm/disarm command cycle.

A security system which includes at least a first sensor, an alarm panel including a control system and programmable apparatus, a connection between the at least one sensor and set alarm panel, a keypad assembly including a camera, and a connection between the keypad assembly and the alarm panel. In various embodiments of the invention the camera includes a CMOS image sensor, the camera produces digital images, the camera tracks the user of the keypad assembly, the camera is remotely controllable from the alarm panel to focus on an object of interest, and/or the camera is remotely controllable from a central monitoring station to focus on an object of interest. In some cases the camera system is configured to take a picture in response to a specific user code entered by the user, take a picture in response to time of day when the input occurs, take a picture in response to invalid code entry and/or take a picture in response to an invalid card being presented. The invention also includes the method for providing enhanced security for protected premises which includes providing at least a first sensor, providing an alarm panel including a control system and programmable apparatus, providing a connection between the at least one sensor and the alarm panel, providing an input device including a camera, and initiating operation of the camera from the alarm panel.
