A method of performing a well bore operation in a well bore includes connecting a window mill to a whipstock connector forming a tubular section, supporting a tool below the whipstock connector, running the window mill, the whipstock connector, and the tool into the well bore, and axially loading the tool to perform the well bore operation.

Window mill and whipstock connector for a resource exploration and recovery system

A window cutting system includes a whipstock connector including an inner surface having at least one projection. A window mill is connected to the whipstock connector. The window mill includes a body having a connector member, a tip portion, a recess formed on an outer surface of the body, an axial passage extending from the connector member toward the tip portion and a radial passage extending outwardly from the axial passage. A pin is arranged in the radial passage and selectively extending into the recess.

Mill to whipstock connection system

A window cutting system includes a window mill having a body including a connector member, a tip portion, and a plurality of blades arranged between the connector member and the tip portion. Each of the plurality of blades supports a plurality of cutting elements. A lug pocket is formed in at least one of the plurality of blades adjacent the plurality of cutting elements. A whipstock connector detachably coupled to the window mill. The whipstock connector including an outer surface and an inner surface, and at least one lug projecting radially inwardly from the inner surface. The at least one lug is selectively received by the lug pocket to connect the whipstock connector to the window mill.

A downhole setting tool and method of using the setting tool, the setting tool including a firing head, an igniter, a housing connected to the firing head, a power charge positioned within a chamber of the housing, and a connector connecting a portion of the power charge to the firing head. The connector may be connected to the uphole end of the power charge. The connector may connect the power charge to an adapter that connects the power charge to the firing head. The connector may be a ring having an outer engagement feature that engages the adapter and an inner engagement feature that engages the power charge. The connector may be a collet including an outer engagement feature that engages the adapter and a plurality of fingers that engage the power charge. The ignitor is used to detonate the power charge to set a device within a wellbore.

Retaining and positioning end cap for downhole setting tool power charges

A downhole setting tool having a first housing, a second housing having a chamber connected to the first housing, a power charge positioned within the chamber, an igniter connected to a portion of the power charge, and an ignition device connected to the igniter. The ignition device is configured to actuate upon receipt of an electrical signal. The ignition device is configured to ignite the igniter. The ignition device may rapidly heat up or apply a voltage or current to the igniter. The igniter is configured to cause the detonation of the power charge to set a device within a wellbore. The igniter may be embedded into the power charge with the ignition device positioned within a cavity in the igniter. The igniter may be a pyrotechnic material or may release high energy heat upon application of voltage or current.

Igniter and ignition device for downhole setting tool power charge

A test packer is lowered to a set liner hanger in a locked position that prevents the seal and slips from setting during running in. A first ball is dropped to shift a sleeve to release the grip of dogs to a groove on an outer housing. Setting down weight sets the test packer seal and sets the slips. After the casing integrity pressure test is done the test packer is lifted to again position the groove in the outer housing by the dogs. A second ball lands on the same seat now enlarged due to earlier movement and breaks a retainer on a locking sleeve. A spring return or continued downhole motion of the locking sleeve locks the packer in the run in position. Subsequent rotation and circulation can take place as completion fluid is circulated in. A circulation port above the packer can be opened optionally for circulation or reversing above the test packer.

Anchor slip and seal locking mechanism

A percussion drilling assembly includes a housing with a hammer bit disposed in the lower end portion thereof and configured to move longitudinally within the housing. The hammer bit includes an annular bit shank having a bit strike face and a cutting structure at a lower end portion thereof. An annular piston having a piston strike face arranged and designed to strike the bit strike face is also disposed in the housing. At least one of the bit strike face and the piston strike face has a toroidal curvature profile. A method includes one or more of lowering the percussion drilling assembly into a borehole, engaging the cutting structure with a formation, and impacting the bit strike face of the annular bit shank with the piston strike face of the annular piston.

A percussion drilling assembly for boring into the earth is disclosed. The percussion drilling assembly includes a top sub, a casing coupled to the top sub, and a feed tube assembly disposed within the top sub and the casing. The feed tube assembly includes a non-rigid coupling having a throughbore and a tubular body disposed therein. The tubular body is translatable in the radial position and/or rotatable relative to a longitudinal centerline extending through the non-rigid coupling.

Percussion drilling assembly having a floating feed tube

A downhole percussion drill or hammer (100) is disclosed having an outer casing (2) in which a reciprocating piston (26) which periodically impacts a drilling bit (16) disposed at a bottom end of the casing. A top chuck (1), attached to the top end of the casing, conducts pressurized air to the interior of the casing. A flow tube (5) includes a supply passage (27) and an exhaust passage (10). No cylinder sleeve exists between the inner diameter of the casing (2) and the outer diameter of the piston (26). Rather, the flow tube (5), piston (26) and interior structure of the casing cooperate to direct pressurized air alternately to the top and bottom ends of the piston while alternately opening and closing the exhaust passage. Accordingly, for a predetermined outer casing diameter, a relatively thicker casing wall and relatively larger top piston surface results in higher relative performance than prior hammers having a cylinder sleeve. The hammer design insures that all pressurized air through a choke (11) in the supply passage ( 27) of the flow tube (5) passes directly to the exhaust passage (29) of the drilling bit (6) and not to the space (6) above the piston (26). Such design also increases hammer performance because bypass pressure does not increase back pressure of the hammer (100). The piston (26) is constructed to move longitudinally downwardly with the bit as the hammer is lifted from the bottom of a bore hole. It is also cooperatively constructed and arranged such that when the apparatus is lifted, all pressurized fluid not bypassed to the bottom of the hammer is conducted to the top of the piston (26) and then exhausted via the drill bit 16, thereby preventing reciprocation and possible piston damage while exhausting such fluid through the bit.
