A method and apparatus for digital image correlation. A camera system is used to obtain larger scale images of a larger scale dot pattern on a surface of a workpiece and smaller scale images of a smaller scale dot pattern on the surface of the same workpiece. The smaller scale dot pattern forms a larger dot in the larger scale dot pattern in the larger scale images. The larger scale images and the smaller scale images may be used to determine a measurement of the workpiece.

Multiple-scale digital image correlation pattern and measurement

Method for measuring residual strain in a cured composite part includes taking a first image of at least two spaced apart particles positioned on a side of the cured composite part with the side positioned transverse to a first face side. The cure composite part includes a first ply has fibers and a second ply has fibers wherein the first ply and the second ply are positioned in overlying relationship to one another. At least a portion of the fibers of the first ply are positioned in angular relationship with at least a portion of the fibers of the second ply. The at least two spaced apart particles are associated with the second ply. Further included is a step of removing at least a portion of the first ply and taking a second image of the at least two spaced apart particles.

Method for measuring residual strain for cured composite part

The disclosed systems and methods relate to inspecting uncured fiber-reinforced composite components by non-contact 3D measurements of the component using 3D digital image correlation with patterned illumination. Systems comprise a light projector configured to project a light pattern onto a form, a digital camera configured to image the light pattern, and may comprise and/or be associated with an AFP machine that is configured to lay uncured composite on the form. Methods comprise projecting a light pattern onto a form, acquiring a baseline 3D profile of the form by imaging the light pattern on the form, laying an uncured fiber piece onto the form, projecting the light pattern onto the uncured fiber piece, acquiring a test 3D profile of the fiber piece by imaging the light pattern on the uncured fiber piece, and computing a thickness difference between the test 3D profile and the baseline 3D profile.

Systems and methods for fiber placement inspection during fabrication of fiber-reinforced composite components

A method for sealing an interface to attenuate high energy currents and voltages traveling thereacross may include forming a cover defining an inner volume shaped to enclose the interface; forming a filled sealant including a semi-rigid sealant mixed with a filler having a multiplicity of discrete particles of different composition than the semi-rigid sealant; placing the filled sealant within the inner volume; and placing the cover containing the filled sealant over the interface such that the filled sealant is adjacent the interface.

Seal with energy-absorbing filler and method of manufacture

A seal for attenuating energy from an electrical discharge across an interface may include a cover defining an inner volume containing a filled sealant including a semi-rigid sealant mixed with a filler having a multiplicity of discrete particles of different composition than the semi-rigid sealant such that the filled sealant is adjacent the interface when the cover is placed over said interface. A braking system for a high speed, high load rotor operating in a vacuum and suspended by a magnetic field such as in a flywheel energy storage device includes a pair of calipers disposed on opposed sides of the rotor for actuating a pair of annular friction discs into engagement with opposed sides of the rotor. Each caliper includes a mounting ring on its outer edge and an inner shallow annular groove in which it disposed one of the friction discs. A circulating fluid under pressure is directed into each annular groove for urging each friction disc into engagement with one of the opposed surfaces of the rotor for safely bringing the rotor to a stop such as in an emergency. The circulating fluid removes the heat generated by the braking action, while the controlled pressure applied by the discs also controls the position of the rotor when static such as during initialization.

A method of operating a production line comprises the steps of supporting equipment in the production line on a plurality of crawlers comprising at least one rolling track and a structural support for supporting the equipment. A first plurality of lifting magnets coupled to an interior surface of said at least one rolling track is configured to oppose a second plurality of lifting magnets coupled to an exterior surface of said structure support to lift the structural support, such that the structural support floats between and within said at least one rolling track. The magnetic fields experienced by the first and second plurality of lift magnets are adjusted to translate the at least one rolling track, such that the crawlers move along the production line.

Method of operating a production line

Superconducting crawler system for a production line

We make large (in excess of 2 cm in diameter), single crystal YBa.sub.2 Cu.sub.3 O.sub.7-x [123 YBCO] crystals, where x.ltoreq.0.6, in a seventeen step process or some variant thereof from finely ground and well mixed 123 YBCO and 211 YBCO powders with a small amount of Pt by controlling the rate of cooling from within a compact of the powders using a temperature gradient in the radial and axial planes (independently) of about 1-1.degree. C./inch diameter of compact to nucleate the crystal growth. We promote crystal growth as well using a samarium oxide seed crystal, preferably SmBa.sub.2 Cu.sub.3 O.sub.(7-y), where y.ltoreq.1.6. After nucleation we cool the compact slowly at a rate from about 0.1-1.degree. C./hr to promote the single crystal development.
