Embodiments of the invention provide a high-reliability, cost-effective electro-hydraulic servo-valve assembly that is not susceptible to failure caused by contaminated fluid. In particular embodiments, the electro-hydraulic servo-valve assembly includes a rotary valve that may be actuated by either a direct-coupled Limited Angle Torque (LAT) motor, a geared, brushless DC motor, or some other rotary electric actuating element with an integrated driver circuit. In particular embodiments, the rotary valve element made up of an outer sleeve element and an inner spool element, with matching ports and slots, respectively.

High-flow electro-hydraulic actuator

A digitally controlled current to pressure converter (CPC) and method of controlling same is provided. The method of controlling includes the step of periodically imparting symmetrically-opposed movement of a control valve of the CPC to loosen and flush accumulated silt therefrom. More particularly, the method may include the step of periodically introducing a small-amplitude symmetrically-opposed impulse to a controller that actuates a hydraulic control shaft of a three-way rotary valve. Also provided is a method of preventing malfunction due to faulty input or feedback signals received by the CPC, and a method of detecting the health status of multiple CPCs when used in a redundant configuration.

Digital closed loop proportional hydraulic pressure controller

Providing wear-related prognostics and diagnostics on a turbine engine includes, while operating a turbine control device, tracking a total device travel distance over time by recurrently: selectively identifying actual device movement based on device position data associated with a displacement sensor monitoring the turbine control device; and accumulating an incremental device travel distance corresponding to the identified actual device movement with the total device travel distance.

Turbine control device prognostics

A digitally controlled current to pressure converter (CPC) is provided. A digital CPC utilizes a digital controller and an onboard pressure transducer to accurately control the output pressure based upon an input analog control signal. The digital controller includes an anti-silting algorithm that provides an impulse movement of the three-way rotary valve of the CPC to loosen and flush away silt contamination from the valve. A redundant seal stack including an intermediate passage to the hydraulic drain ensures a low pressure drop across the outboard seal minimizing the potential for leakage and improving reliability of the CPC. The digital controller also includes redundancy and fault management algorithms that enable the use of multiple inputs and feedback signals for control of the CPC. Master/slave operation and transitioning is also provided by the digital controller.

An apparatus for reducing pressure spikes in a fuel line having a shut-off valve is provided. The apparatus comprises a body housing a biasing member and a moveable separation member. The body has first, second, and third chambers. The first and second chambers are coupled to upstream and downstream sides of the fuel line, respectively. The third chamber is coupled to a return line. When the shut-off valve is open, the separation member is biased toward the first chamber and separates the first and second chambers. When the shut-off valve is closed, the separation member expands the first chamber and places the first chamber and the third chamber in fluid communication once the separation member has gained a significant speed. The expanded first chamber accumulates fuel and the third chamber accumulates and vents the fuel such that transient pressure spikes are reduced and unlikely to damage a turbine system.

Apparatus for elimination of transient pressure spikes on stiff fluid systems

A redundant sealing system with secondary containment for preventing leakage of fluid along a valve shaft is provided. The system comprises a first set of dynamic seals, a second set of dynamic seals, an auxiliary barrier fluid chamber, and a barrier fluid indicator. The first and second set of dynamic seals are in spaced relation to each other a distance equal to or further than a maximum stroke length of an actuatable valve stem. The auxiliary barrier fluid chamber is interposed between the first and second sets of dynamic seals. The barrier fluid indicator has a piston in a primary barrier fluid chamber. A first face of the piston is exposed to the auxiliary barrier fluid chamber. A second face of the piston is exposed to a barrier fluid and inhibited from fluid communication with the auxiliary barrier fluid chamber by a dynamic seal in the first set of dynamic seals.

Fully independent, redundant fluid energized sealing solution with secondary containment

A pressurized sealing arrangement suited for providing a seal between a valve stem and a valve body is provided. The sealing arrangement includes a piston that is restrained in and statically sealed to the valve body and which surrounds the valve stem. Contained within the piston is an annular seal packing that includes two sealing elements spaced apart by a spacer element. The piston includes a face acted upon by a process fluid flowing through the valve body in such a manner that the piston exerts pressure upon a lubricant cavity. The lubricant cavity is in fluid communication with the seal packing such that lubricant contained therein forms a lubricant ring around the stem. Lubricant is also thereby supplied to sealing elements of the packing seal. To prevent contamination of the seal packing, a removable cover is provided that encloses the piston and seal packing.

Pressurized seal arrangement

An electrical actuator is particularly suited for driving a wellhead valve for regulating the flow of natural gas from a production well. The electrical actuator can be driven using the existing local power supply in wellhead valve systems, typically a solar panel and a battery. The electrical actuator may include a gear reduction train, a brake and a manual input override with clutch protection. The electrical actuator can be configured in three different operational modes that provides a predetermined position upon power loss including fail-bias fixed, fail open and fail bias closed.

Actuator for well-head valve or other similar applications and system incorporating same

A unique and useful dynamic control system has been invented for the control of a catalytic combustion system for use on a dynamic plant, preferably, a gas turbine engine. The dynamic control system facilitates the replacement of conventional flame combustion systems with catalytic combustion systems, which produce far less pollutants, by producing acceptable transient performance of the combustion system. A method of controlling the catalytic combustion process comprises the steps of calculating a mass flow of air introduced into the combustor, monitoring a flow of fuel to be combusted within the combustor, monitoring a temperature of the air introduced into the combustor, calculating an inlet temperature set point based on the mass flow and fuel flow, and controlling a pre-burner to heat the air based on the inlet temperature set point, the mass flow, and the temperature of the air. Further, the mass flow may be estimated based on ambient air temperature and pressure, and compressor speed. A catalytic combustion gas turbine system is also presented, the operation of which is controlled by a dynamic plant controller which generates a fuel flow rate demand signal to control the flow of fuel to be combusted in response to dynamic plant demands.
