A circuit may include one or more first ports that may receive one or more input signals from a first device, such that the one or more first ports may couple to a control system. The circuit may also include one or more second ports that may couple to a second device, such that the one or more second ports may couple to the one or more first ports via a direct connection. An industrial safety architecture integrates employee identity and enterprise-level security policy into plant-floor functional safety systems, allowing control and safety systems on the plant floor to regulate safe interactions with hazardous controlled machinery based on user identity or role. The architecture leverages existing employee identity and security policy data maintained on the corporate level of an industrial enterprise to manage identity- and/or role-based control and safety on the plant level. Safety authority systems at both the corporate level and the plant level of the industrial enterprise obtain employee and security policy data from corporate-level systems and provides this data in as SIL-rated manner to industrial control and safety systems on the plant floor, where the identity and security policy information is used by functional safety systems to control access to industrial systems as a function of user identity, role, certifications, or other qualifications.

An industrial control system providing security against tampering or modification generates periodic state thumbprints defining a state of control elements that may be forwarded to a security or safety appliance for comparison to a benchmark thumbprint indicating no tampering. A safety-rated industrial device, such as a motor drive, is provided with a safety subsystem that is initially bypassed as a factory default mode. While the safety subsystem is disabled, the device operates as a standard non-safety device, allowing users to perform operations with the device (e.g., turning a motor in the case of motor drives) without requiring safety input devices or a safety controller to be connected to the device. The device continues to operate as a standard non-safety device until a proper safety configuration is applied to the device, whereby the device's safety subsystem is retentatively enabled and the device begins operating as a safety-rated device. While the safety subsystem is enabled, certain device operations that were permitted during standard mode independently of an attached safety controller or safety input devices are made contingent on the monitored status of an associated safety system.
