The ventilation system further includes a function that permits seamless transition between modes of operation.

A compressor apparatus having a first compressor head for generating a first gas flow and a second compressor head for generating a second gas flow with a shuttling by-pass component in fluid flow communication between the first and second compressor heads for allowing the output of a portion of either the first gas flow or the second gas flow to be diverted to the other compressor head. The shuttling by-pass component allows a portion of the first gas flow to be diverted from the first compressor head to the second compressor head during an exhaust stroke of the first compressor head, while also allowing a portion of the second gas flow to be diverted from the second compressor head to the first compressor head during an exhaust stroke of the second compressor head in alternating sequence such that a more steady output of gas flow may be attained.

Shuttling by-pass compressor apparatus

One or more embodiments of the presently described invention provides a ventilator including a timing device, an electric power source and a flow control device. The timing device is electronically controlled and is capable of controlling a period of time that a fluid is delivered to a patient. The timing device can control this period of time using a solenoid. The flow control device controls a rate of flow that the fluid is delivered to the patient. The flow control device can control the rate of flow using a plurality of orifices. The timing device and flow control device are separate from one another and each is capable of being operated independent of the other.

Ventilator apparatus

A surge prevention valve may be used to prevent the formation of an initial surge of high pressure. The valve may be located, for example, between a high pressure gas cylinder and a medical pressure regulator. The valve is provided with first and second valves located within a housing and integrating a pressurization orifice. The initial opening of the valve in an axial direction enables gas to flow through the pressurization orifice at a first flow rate. The full opening of the valve in the axial direction enables the gas to flow through the second valve at a second flow rate, which is much higher than the first flow rate. The controlled pressurization of the gas through the orifice delays the time during which the gas reaches full recompression. The valve may be further provided with a vent for venting pressurized gas away from a nominally closed top surface of the lower valve element. The valve may be also provided with a valve inlet tube extending into a gas cylinder to prevent contaminants, particles and/or impurities from entering the valve.

In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the valve has a deformable seal element that is sealed on both sides when the main passageway is closed. The deformable element, which may be an apertured disk, may be resiliently bowed or preloaded. This helps the disk remain in the desired position against a first one of the valve seats even after the disk is permanently deformed by the first valve seat.

The present invention relates to a structurally rigid, X-ray translucent backboard for transporting an injured person from the scene of an injury to a treatment center. The backboard comprises a planar top side which contacts the patient and a bottom side forming a single curvilinear shape that provides structural support to the planar top side. A hollow, foam filled core formed between the planer top side and the curved bottom side helps provide sufficient X-ray translucence and structural support to the backboard.

The valve may be located, for example, between a high pressure oxygen cylinder and a medical pressure regulator. The valve also may be used for other purposes. The surge prevention valve may have a housing with an inlet and an outlet. A seal unit may be used to close the main flow path from the inlet to the outlet, and a bleed passageway may be provided in the seal unit to bypass the main flow path. The valve may have an actuator for opening the bleed passageway and for moving the seal unit to open the main flow path. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, a manual push-then-turn operation is used to open the valve. The actuator may be used to threadedly move the seal unit toward and away from the valve seat to close and open the main flow path. In addition, a valve rod may be provided for closing the bleed passageway. The valve rod may be slidably located within the seal unit and movable by pushing down on a handle or a handle button on the valve. The present invention also relates to a method of operating a high pressure valve.

A pressure regulator utilizing a gauge having rugged internal components. In one embodiment, the gauge has a low profile and is mounted to the regulator body. In another embodiment, the gauge is integral with the regulator body. In one preferred embodiment, the gauge includes a pressure pin and a bias, such as a spring. One side of the pressure pin communicates directly with the source pressure and is urged by the source pressure to move the pressure pin in a first direction, while the other side of the pressure pin is at a known pressure, such as ambient or atmospheric pressure, and is urged by the bias to move the pressure pin in a second direction opposed to the first direction. An indication of the position of the pressure pin is sensed by a user and is used to determine the source pressure or level. In one aspect, the indicator is a pointer or indicator mounted to move in response to movement of the pressure pin and mounted so that its position is visible (i.e., sensed by sight) to the user. In another aspect, the pressure pin is arranged lengthwise inside the regulator and a disc or other shaped indicator is mounted on the end of the pressure pin. A lens is provided such that the edge of the disc (or other indicator) is visible to a user. A calibrated scale indicating the amount of gas in the bottle is provided such that the position of the disc (or other indicator) with respect to the scale will indicate an amount of gas left in the bottle.

Pressure regulator with gauge

A device for protecting a gauge includes a base portion for attachment to a surface, and a cover portion attached to the base portion for shielding the gauge from impact. In one embodiment, the base portion has legs defining a saddle-shaped surface matching the surface to which the gauge protector is attached. The cover portion may have a sight glass positioned such that the gauge face is visible even though the entire gauge is enclosed. The device may be used to protect a pressure gauge for a regulator for a portable oxygen bottle.
