An embodiment of the invention includes a tunable optical dispersion compensator (TODC) comprising a first beam displacer on an optical path, wherein the first beam displacer separates an optical signal into a first beam and a second beam, and one or more polarizing beam splitters on the optical path, wherein the one or more polarizing beam splitters keep the first beam and the second beam on the optical path. The TODC also comprises one or more etalons on the optical path, wherein the one or more etalons are tunable to introduce a group delay in the first beam and the second beam, and a reflecting mirror on the optical path, wherein the reflecting mirror returns the optical signal back along the optical path. The TODC further comprises a second beam displacer, wherein the second beam displacer combines the first beam and the second beam into an output optical signal.

In an embodiment, a DP-QPSK demodulator includes first, second and third polarization beam splitters ('PBSs') and first, second and third half waveplates ('HWPs'). The first HWP is positioned to receive an output of the first PBS. The second PBS is positioned to receive an output of the first HWP. The second HWP is positioned to receive an output of the second PBS. The third PBS is positioned to receive an output of the second HWP. The third HWP is positioned to receive an output of the third PBS.

Dual-polarization QPSK demodulator

Asymmetrical interleavers and deinterleavers. In one example embodiment, an asymmetrical deinterleaver includes first, second, third, fourth, and fifth filter cells interleaved with first, second, third, and fourth waveplates and followed by a fifth waveplate. The filter cells are configured to filter optical signals propagating on first and second legs of an optical loop. The asymmetrical deinterleaver also includes a retro reflector optically coupled with the filter cells and waveplates. The retro reflector is configured to reflect the optical signals between the first leg and the second leg to form the optical loop. The asymmetrical deinterleaver further includes a single-fiber collimator optically coupled to the first leg of the optical loop and a dual-fiber collimator optically coupled to the second leg of the optical loop.

An apparatus for use in an optical transceiver module that incorporates an integrated multiplexer/demultiplexer for high speed data transfer applications. One example embodiment includes a transmissive block arranged to interface with a transmit optical port, a receive optical port, and a plurality of optical subassemblies. The transmit optical port may transmit a first multiplexed optical signal and the receive optical port may receive a second multiplexed optical signal. Filters may be positioned between the transmissive block and one or more of the optical subassemblies to transmit signals at predetermined wavelengths while reflecting other signals incident thereon.

A glass optical reflective tap is described that optically connects two optical fibers and may tap a portion of the light that is being communicated between the optical fibers. In one embodiment of the invention, the optical filter includes two D-lenses that operate as focusing or collimator lenses. The first D-lens focuses an optical signal onto a tap filter that allows a majority of the light within an optical signal to pass and also reflects a small portion of optical signal light to a reflective port. The second D-lens focuses the passed light into a transmission port of an optical fiber.

Multimode reflective tap

A thin film interleaver device is disclosed. The thin film interleaver includes thin film optics. The thin film(s) are formed such that they reflect one group of wavelengths while allowing a second group of wavelengths to pass through the thin film(s). The thin film(s) exhibit a flat top frequency response across the channel bandwidths of the multiplexed signal for which the thin film filter is designed such that the thin film interleaver is less sensitive to wavelength drift and temperature variations.

Spatially-efficient optical multiplexers and optical demultiplexers include elements interrelating along orthogonal axes. A transmission block of extreme thinness has highly reflective coatings on opposed parallel surfaces. Lasers of multiplexer are on one side of transmission block with transmission axes perpendicular to transmission block surface. An associated multiplexed signal transmitting port on opposite side of transmission block has receiving axis parallel to transmission block surface on that side. Detectors of demultiplexer are on one side of transmission block with reception axes perpendicular to transmission block surface. An associated multiplexed signal receiving port on opposite side of transmission block has receiving axis parallel to transmission block surface on that side. A unitary structure performs both optical multiplexer functions and optical demultiplexer function with a single thin transmission block. Related optical signal processing methods are included.

Compact optical multiplexer and demultiplexer

A package for maintaining alignment of components includes a frame and a beam with the beam attached to the frame and one end of the beam. One or more components are mounted to the beam. The frame and a portion of the beam are separated from each other by a channel which allows portions of the beam to flex substantially independently of the frame when a force is applied to the frame. Thus, the effects resulting from forces applied to the frame are not experienced by the beam, or are at least attenuated, so that the alignment of the components mounted on the beam is substantially preserved.

An input fiber is optically coupled to the optical add/drop component and permanently or detachably connected to the casing. An output fiber is optically coupled to the optical add/drop component and permanently connected to the casing.

Methods and apparatus for tuning an optical element include, in one aspect, an optical element having a specified response at a predetermined location and means for redirecting incident light to a location on the optical element other than the predetermined location so as to achieve a desired response.

Method and apparatus for precision tuning an optical filter using a ball-end joint

An optical device that can be used in a range of telecommunications applications including optical multiplexers/demultiplexers and optical routers. The optical device includes an optical processing loop which allows multi-stage performance characteristics to be achieved with a single physical filtration stage. Optical processing on the first leg and second legs of the loop is asymmetrical thereby improving the integrity of the optical signals by effecting complementary chromatic dispersion on the first and second legs. In an embodiment of the invention the optical device includes a fundamental filter cell, a retro reflector and a splitter/combiner. The fundamental filter cell filters optical signals propagating on each of two legs of an optical loop which intersects the fundamental filter cell. The fundamental filter cell operates as a full waveplate to the odd set of channels and a half waveplate to the even set of channels on a selected one of the two legs and as a half waveplate to the odd set of channels and a full waveplate to the even set of channels on a remaining one of the two legs. The retro reflector optically couples with the fundamental filter cell to reflect the optical signals from one of the two legs to an other of the two legs to form the optical loop. The splitter/combiner optically couples between the fundamental filter cell and the retro reflector to split or combine the odd set of channels and the even set of channels depending on the propagation direction of the optical signals along the optical loop.

Method and apparatus for an optical multiplexer and demultiplexer with an optical processing loop

A portion of an optical device is disclosed. In one aspect of the present invention, the device comprises a cylinder formed about an axis having first and second ends, the second end being formed so as to define a segment of an inward-facing concave spherical surface. A module is provided defining a cylinder formed about the axis and having first and second ends and an optical element disposed therein about the axis. The first end of the module is formed so as to define a segment of an outward-facing convex spherical surface, and the convex surface is complimentary in shape to the concave surface. The complimentary concave and convex surfaces of the cylinder and the module are mated so as to allow the optical element to be aligned about a plane forming a predetermined angle with the axis.
