A conservation control system is provided for integration with an cross-direction controller on a sheet making machine. The conservation control system receives inputs from the cross-direction controller and accepts and/or modifies the controller commands to a profiler based on desired performance and conservation trade-offs.

An automated diagnosis and analysis function is performed that is specific to one of the values exceeding a threshold.

Reducing product variations via variance partition analysis

A system and method for generating indices to quantify operating transition performance of a continuous process, such as a sheet forming process, includes a computer system that is configured to generate a normalized overall transition performance index. The overall transition performance index is formed from a plurality of individual parameter indices associated with specific production components or portions of the process line. As such, the individual parameter indices allow a user of the system to readily identify the particular portion of the continuous process line that is performing below desired levels. In addition, because the overall transition performance index is normalized, it enables comparison of the operating transition performance of multiple process lines.

System and method for generating indices to quantify operating transition performance of a continuous process

A method is provided for analyzing and diagnosing a large scale process automation control system having a plurality of control loops. Assessments for pre-defined key performance indicators (KPIs) are automatically generated for control, process and signal sections of each control loop. The automatically generated assessments of the pre-defined KPIs may be displayed in a graphical user interface (GUI) of a computer. A user may change the automatically generated assessments of the pre-defined KPIs. Different data views may also be displayed in the GUI. The data views include time series trends for measured process variable, controller output, controller set point and error, as well as controller parameter clustering views in two-dimensional and three-dimensional plots.

Method for analyzing and diagnosing large scale process automation control systems

A web making machine is monitored to identify at least one cross-machine direction (CD) actuator that is developing local mapping problems. The identified CD actuator and a segment of surrounding actuators are probed to determine a performance curve for the actuator. The center of an insensitivity region of the performance curve is selected as an optimal mapping alignment setting for the identified actuator with the setting for the actuator being updated. Global smoothing may also be accomplished by probing a global smoothness factor to generate a corresponding performance curve that is then similarly used to select an optimal value for the smoothness factor.

Method and apparatus for controlling cross-machine direction (CD) controller settings to improve CD control performance in a web making machine

A method for determining the measure of control provided to a process by a control system. The determines process model parameters for a simple and complex model of the process and uses those parameters along with the value of the process variable and the final control element position to predict the off control data. The method also uses the process model parameters to determine the optimal tuning and then forecasts the optimal process performance from the predicted off control data and the determined optimal tuning.
