A system, apparatus, and method to combine radio frequency identification and electronic article surveillance receivers into a single device are described wherein a first selection signal is sent to switch a first switch to a first state to connect a receiver to a first antenna in order to detect a first type of security tag in a first operating mode and a second selection signal is sent to switch the first switch to a second state to connect the receiver to a second antenna to detect a second type of security tag in a second operating mode. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Techniques for radio frequency identification and electronic article surveillance receivers

A method according to one embodiment may include detecting an activated electronic article surveillance (EAS) tag in an interrogation zone, and reading at least one radio frequency identification (RFID) tag in response to the detecting of the activated EAS tag in the interrogation zone to investigate a cause of the EAS tag in said interrogation zone. A method according to another embodiment may include detecting a condition representative of an activated RFID tag in a controlled area, and taking corrective action to prevent removal of the activated RFID tag from the controlled area.

The present invention replaces the conventional bias magnets for EAS markers with a paintable or printable bias magnet material, which is either directly painted onto the EAS marker or first placed onto a substrate material, which is then placed into the EAS marker. The material includes a magnetic powder mixed with resin and solvent. This &ldquo;bias paint&rdquo; is then applied onto the EAS marker. The magnetic powder, resin, and solvent provide a very dense layer after drying, which has a magnetic material density that is usually lower than a rolled product, but is higher than that of the injection-molded magnet material. Printing the bias magnet allows nondeactivatable magnetomechanical EAS markers to be made using web-based mass production methods.

A data processing system automatically maintains records of respective locations of a plurality of objects in real time. Each of the objects has secured thereto a respective object marker which transmits an identification signal that is unique to the respective object. Sensor devices are installed at respective doorways of a building. Each sensor device receives the identification signal transmitted from the object marker as the respective object is moved through the doorway. The sensor device detects from the identification signal a direction in which the object is being moved through the doorway and generates a detection signal indicative of the detected direction of movement and also indicative of the identification signal for the object. The data processing system receives the detection signals from the sensor devices and maintains a data record with respect to each of the objects indicating the present location in the building of each of the objects.
