An optical structure for controlling distribution of light generated by a light source is described. The optical structure includes a primary optics disposed relative to the light source and configured to reflect light generated by the light source towards a target region. The optical structure also includes a secondary optics disposed and aligned relative to the primary optics. The secondary optics is configured to at least partially block light generated by the light source from illuminating a region outside the target region.

Integrated louvres for beam control in an LED lighting device

A lighting module is disclosed. The lighting module includes a light emitting diode (LED) light source, and a total internal reflection (TIR) optical assembly. The optical assembly includes a refractor configured to be located proximate to the LED light source, and a reflector configured to be attached to the refractor. The refractor is made from a material that is resistant to thermal damage when exposed to heat generated by the LED light source.

Two stage optic for LED devices

A light source, for example a light emitting diode, can emit light and have an associated optical axis. The source can be deployed in applications where it is desirable to have illumination biased laterally relative to the optical axis, such as in a street luminaire where directing light towards a street is beneficial. The source can be coupled to an optic that comprises a cavity. At least a portion of the cavity can have an outline that is egg-shaped in cross section. A backside of the cavity (or a backside portion of the optic) can have an irregular shape for receiving the light emitting diode, for example to form a receptacle shaped to fit a circuit.

Method and system for managing light from a light emitting diode

An optical system includes an optic and a reflector. The optic has a rear surface with a cavity configured to receive light from a light source and a front surface opposite the rear surface, the front surface configured to emit light processed by the optic and the front surface including a centrally disposed convex region. The front surface and the rear surface of the optic meet at a rim that extends peripherally with respect to the cavity. The reflector is disposed adjacent the optic and comprises a light-receiving end adjoining the rim, a light-emitting end, and a tapered region that extends between the light-receiving end and the light-emitting end.

Optical system for managing light from a light emitting diode

An optic configured to create an asymmetric pattern of illumination includes a cavity defined by a sidewall. The cavity is oriented to receive light emitted by a light source that is disposed adjacent a light source receiving end of the cavity. Further, the optic includes a totally internally reflective surface that extends circumferentially about the sidewall and is tapered, so as to reflect emitted light that passes through the sidewall of the cavity and into a body of the optic. The totally internally reflective surface can have a form that is different on opposing sides of the cavity. Furthermore, the optic includes a convex surface that is disposed at a light emitting end of the sidewall to condense, focus, or collimate emitted light from the light source.

Optic for providing biased illumination

A lighting system includes an optic that has at least two reflective surfaces that are oriented such that they face each other. Further, the lighting system includes a plurality of light emitting diodes that are disposed adjacent one end of the optic. Furthermore, the lighting system includes a lightguide that is disposed adjacent an opposite end of the optic such that an edge of the lightguide is retained within and disposed between the at least two reflective surfaces of the optic. The at least two reflective surfaces of the optic reflect and guide light emitted by the plurality of light emitting diodes to the edge of the lightguide. The light then couples into the lightguide through the edge and is guided towards an opposing edge of the light guide. The light exits the lightguide through the opposing edge and/or major surfaces of the lightguide.

Lighting system

A light module can comprise a light emitting diode that generates light and an optic that manipulates or manages the resulting light. The optic can direct the generated light off axis, resulting in an illumination pattern that is biased towards one side of the light module, for example in a desired direction. Thus, the optic can transform the emission pattern of the light emitting diode to create an illumination pattern that is aimed in a desired direction. The optic can comprise a light-blocking shield to suppress, manage, or redirect light that would otherwise emanate from the light module in an unintended direction, for example opposite the desired direction.

Adjustable light module

A light source can comprise an optical element, one or more light emitting diodes, and an adjustment. The light emitting diode or diodes can emit light. The optical element can process the emitted light to produce an illumination pattern. The adjustment can change the relative positions of the optical element and the light emitting diodes or diodes, for example by moving some aspect of the optical element or some aspect of the light emitting diode or diodes. The positional change can change the illumination pattern. The adjustment can comprise settings so that the light source can be readily configured to meet predefined application parameters, for example according to IESNA roadway classifications.

Configurable light source

A light source, for example a light emitting diode, can emit light and have an associated optical axis. The source can be deployed in applications where it is desirable to have illumination biased laterally relative to the optical axis, such as in a street luminaire where directing light towards a street is beneficial. The source can be coupled to an optic that comprises an inner surface facing the source and an outer surface that is opposite the inner surface. The inner surface can comprise a refractive surface that receives light headed away from the optical axis of the light source, for example opposite the street. The refractive surface can form the received light into a beam. The outer surface of the optic can reflect the beam back across the optical axis, for example so that light headed away from the street is redirected towards the street.
