A system for sensing particulate matter receives a first plurality of electronic signals from a photodetector over a period of time, the first plurality of electronic signals associated with a first plurality of particles, wherein each of the first plurality of electronic signals has a respective amplitude, sorts the first plurality of electronic signals into a plurality of amplitude levels, determines a respective quantity of signals associated with each amplitude level, determine an average summation of the first plurality of electronic signals, performs a calibration using the average summation, receives a second plurality of electronic signals from the photodetector over a period of time subsequent to the calibration, the second plurality of electronic signals associated with a second plurality of particles, and determines a mass concentration of the second plurality of particles based on the second plurality of electronic signals.

Systems, methods, and devices for sensing particulate matter

System () for calibrating particulate matter sensors includes a chamber () including a plurality of particulate matter sensors (----N), a fan (), a particulate matter source (), an air cleaner (), and a reference particulate matter sensor (), a computing device () having a processor () and a memory () storing instructions which, when executed by the processor (), cause the processor () to activate the particulate matter source () and the fan () until the reference concentration reaches a threshold, activate the air cleaner () responsive to the threshold being reached until the reference concentration reaches a calibration point, receive a respective determined mass concentration from each of the plurality of particulate matter sensors (----N) at the calibration point, and calibrate each of the plurality of particulate matter sensors (----N) based, at least in part, on a respective relationship between the reference concentration and each determined mass concentration at the calibration point. Methods and devices for calibrating particulate matter sensors are also described.

Embodiments relate to systems and methods for providing airflow within a particulate matter sensor. A particulate matter sensor may comprise an air duct, a light source configured to pass light through the air duct, a extender connected to the light source configured to dissipate thermal energy generated by the light source, and to generate a updraft of airflow into the air duct, a photodetector located in the air duct, and a computing device coupled to the photodetector. The computing device has a processor and a memory storing instructions which, when executed by the processor, determines a mass concentration of particles in the air duct based on an output of the photodetector.

Utilizing updraft flow in a fan-less dust sensor

A particulate matter (PM) sensor. The sensor comprises a mass separation fluid tunnel body defining a fluid inflow channel, a first fluid channel branch opening off of the inflow channel and having a first outlet, a second fluid channel branch opening off of the inflow channel and having a second outlet, and a fluid port between the first fluid channel branch and the second fluid channel branch, a fan located downstream of the first outlet and the second outlet, a photodetector located in the first fluid channel branch, and a computing device coupled to the photodetector having a processor and a memory storing instructions which, when executed by the processor, determines a mass concentration of particles in the first fluid channel branch based on an output of the photodetector.
