Disclosed apparatus and method to extrude a honeycomb, providing correction in bowing of the extruded honeycomb structure, employs a deflector device having a base plate including an opening aligned in a direction parallel to the extrusion axis through which the plastic material is conveyed to the die. The deflector device includes a bow plate movably mounted to the downstream or upstream side of the base plate. The bow plate includes a constant area aperture. The deflector device positioned upstream of extrusion die imparts a degree of bow reduction by the position of the constant area aperture over the opening imparting a pressure drop gradient on the flow stream entering the die.

Device and method of correcting extrudate bow

The present disclosure provides a method of stiffening an outer layer of a wet extrudate, where the extrudate has a honeycomb cellular structure. The method includes extruding the extrudate through an extrusion apparatus and directing a substantially uniform flow of fluid onto the outer layer of the extrudate. The method also includes increasing the temperature of a binder material of the extrudate to its gelation point and stiffening at least the outer layer of the extrudate.

System and method for controlling the peripheral stiffness of a wet ceramic extrudate

An apparatus for orienting section of a plasticized ceramic extrudate includes a marking assembly for applying an orientation reference mark to a plasticized ceramic extrudate exiting an extrusion die onto an extrudate support, and at least one extrudate-contacting deformable roller having an axis of rotation, wherein the axis of rotation is pivotable with respect to a movement of the extrudate exiting an extrusion die, and wherein the roller is adapted to contact the extrudate and correct a corkscrew deformation of the extrudate exiting the extrusion die. The apparatus also includes at least one extrudate-contacting orientation control member for correcting the orientation of a cut section of the extrudate on the extrudate support in response to a misalignment of the reference mark. The apparatus further includes at least one gripping member adapted to laterally transfer the cut section of the extrudate along a linear path with respect to the extrudate support while preventing any orientation change of the cut section of the extrudate support, and a visual inspection apparatus adapted to confirm the orientation of the cut section of the extrudate on extrudate support.

This invention contemplates a near net-shape method of making thin glass-ceramic articles possessing substantially uniform thickness and parallel opposing surfaces comprising the steps of: (a) heating the receiving and opposing molding surfaces of a mold to predetermined different temperatures; (b) bringing the receiving and opposing molding surfaces of the mold into close proximity to each other to press a delivered charge of molten glass to fill said mold, while thermally providing and maintaining a substantially parallel fit between the receiving and opposing surfaces of the mold, to achieve substantially uniform thickness in the pressed charge, (c) pressing the glass charge for a time sufficient to remove enough heat from the glass charge that the temperatures of the molding surfaces and the glass article surfaces are all nearly at equilibrium, wherein the press time and mold temperature differential combine to result in symmetric heat removal thereby causing all the aforementioned temperatures to reach equilibrium at nearly the same time, (d) removing the glass article from the mold; (e) covering the opposing surfaces of the glass article with a refractory insulating material; (f) heat treating the covered glass article at a temperature and for a time sufficient to cause the glass article to crystallize in situ to a glass-ceramic article; and (g) cooling the covered glass-ceramic article to room temperature and removing the covering therefrom.
