A method and device are presented for providing patient safe light to a wound. The device includes a radiation source producing flora lethal radiation wavelengths, a radiation conduit detachably optically coupled to the radiation source, and a patch remotely located from the radiation source configured to at least partially conform to a surface contour of the wound. The patch includes a flexible panel formed of a radiation transmitting material able to withstand sterilization, including at least one surface with a disturbed surface area configured to emit radiation upon the wound.

A detection system for remotely determining the speed of a rotating tool tip in a pneumatic dental handpiece. A means for detecting the speed of the rotating tool tip monitors a periodic mechanical function at the pneumatic hose connected to the handpiece. The monitored periodic mechanical function serves to provide feedback that is used to control the speed of the rotating tool tip. The means for detecting the speed of the rotating tool detects a mechanical function of the rotating tool tip, which in transmitted to a controller. The controller in turn regulates the operation of an air supply valve in response to the detected mechanical function. The valve regulates the flow of air to the handpiece. By continuously adjusting the flow of air through the valve into the pneumatic hose, the speed of the rotating tool is maintained at the desired cutting speed.

A high intensity LED based lighting array for use in an obstruction light with efficient uniform light output is disclosed. The high intensity LED based lighting array has a ring assembly having a plurality of reflectors and light emitting diodes. The ring assembly has a planar surface mounting each of the plurality of primary reflectors in perpendicular relation to a respective one of the plurality of light emitting diodes. A secondary diffuser is positioned on the ring to mix light from the light emitting diodes to create a uniform light emission in a range of azimuth angles.

The optical element has an internal recess adapted to fit over a light source. The internal recess includes a collimating surface and interior refractive surfaces. An exterior refractive surface corresponding to the interior refractive surfaces is provided. A faceted prismatic reflecting surface corresponding with the collimating surface is provided. Light at a substantially horizontal angle relative to the horizon is emitted through the interior refractive surface through the exterior reflective surface to a side direction and light at a substantially vertical angle relative to the horizon is collimated by the collimating surface and reflected by the reflecting surface in the side direction.

A high intensity LED based lighting array for use in an obstruction light with efficient uniform light output is disclosed. The high intensity LED based lighting array has a first concentric ring having a plurality of reflectors and light emitting diodes. The concentric ring has a planar surface mounting each of the plurality of reflectors in perpendicular relation to a respective one of the plurality of light emitting diodes. At least some of the first plurality of reflectors are adjustable relative to the position of the respective light emitting diode to produce a precise beam pattern from the light emitting diode.
