A particulate matter (PM) filter assembly includes a PM filter that filters PM from an exhaust stream and that includes an entry face facing a first direction of flow of the exhaust stream, and a swirl element disposed in the exhaust stream and that includes a blade that directs a portion of the exhaust stream in a second direction of flow that is different than the first direction of flow. The blade directs the portion of the exhaust stream to distribute the exhaust stream over a frontal area of the entry face of the PM filter. A related method of filtering particulate matter from an exhaust stream is also provided.

A mixing apparatus mountable within a generally cylindrical passage defined by an exhaust gas conduit of an exhaust gas after-treatment system is provided. The passage includes an outer region and an inner region operable to convey an exhaust stream and a liquid stream, such as a urea stream. The mixing apparatus includes a retainer ring operable to retain the mixing apparatus within the passage. A first plurality of fins extends from the retainer ring and is operable to impart a rotational velocity component in a first direction to the exhaust stream and urea stream in the outer region of the passage. A second plurality of fins extends from the retainer ring and is operable to impart a rotational velocity component in a second direction, opposite the first direction, to the exhaust stream and urea stream in the inner region of the passage.

Mixing apparatus for an exhaust after-treatment system

A variable displacement hydraulic/pump motor has a yoke with a pair of shafts aligned to define a yoke pivot axis and connected to a valve plate therebetween having intake and discharge apertures. A rotatable cylinder barrel has piston cylinders open at one end to receive a piston head and opening through fluid ports at another end, flush against the valve plate surface. A drive block is mounted on an input/output shaft for rotation about a central axis of rotation inclined at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder barrel which may be changed by a drive engaging the yoke at a point near its pivot axis. Loads on bushings supporting the yoke shafts are reduced by providing radially extending fluid ports in the shafts and in communication with the intake and discharge apertures of the valve plate.

High-efficiency, large angle, variable displacement hydraulic pump/motor

A free piston engine has a pair of opposed cylinders on opposite sides of a fluid pumping assembly. An inner piston assembly includes a pair of inner pistons, one each in a respective one of the cylinders, with a push rod connected therebetween. The push rod forms a fluid plunger. An outer piston assembly includes a pair of outer pistons, one each in a respective one of the cylinders, with a pull rod connected therebetween. The pull rod forms a fluid plunger. The movement of the inner and outer piston assemblies during engine operation will cause the fluid plungers to pump fluid from a low pressure container into a high pressure chamber as a means of storing the energy output. A hydraulic coupler synchronizes the inner and outer piston assemblies.

A free piston engine is configured with a pair of opposed engine cylinders located on opposite sides of a fluid pumping assembly. An inner piston assembly includes a pair of inner pistons, one each operatively located in a respective one of the engine cylinders, with a push rod connected between the inner pistons. The push rod extends through an inner pumping chamber in the fluid pumping assembly and forms a fluid plunger within this chamber. An outer piston assembly includes a pair of pistons, one each operatively located in a respective one of the engine cylinders, with at least one pull rod connected between the outer pistons. The pull rod extends through an outer pumping chamber in the fluid pumping assembly and forms a fluid plunger within this chamber. The movement of the inner and outer piston assemblies during engine operation will cause the fluid plungers to pump fluid from a low pressure container into a high pressure chamber as a means of storing the energy output from the engine. Alternatively, the piston assemblies may drive a linear alternator. Located adjacent to at least one of the pistons are oil holes, with an oil mist annulus supplying oil mist therethrough. The oil in the oil mist will lubricate the engine cylinder wall while minimizing the oil consumption of the engine.

A free piston engine is configured with a pair of opposed engine cylinders located on opposite sides of a fluid pumping assembly. An inner piston assembly includes a pair of inner pistons, one each operatively located in a respective one of the engine cylinders, with a push rod connected between the inner pistons. An outer piston assembly includes a pair of pistons, one each operatively located, in a respective one of the engine cylinders, with at least one pull rod connected between the outer pistons. The pull rod extends through an outer pumping chamber in the fluid pumping assembly and forms a fluid plunger within this chamber. Each outer piston cooperates with an integrated scavenge pump in order to compress the charge air, thus significantly increasing the air charge density into the engine cylinders for each stroke of the engine.
