Embodiments of the disclosure relate to a flame retardant composition. The flame retardant composition includes 70 wt % to 90 wt % of at least one polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) resin, 15 wt % to 25 wt % of a flame retardant additive, an ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH), an organoclay synergist, and at least one of a PBT chain extender having epoxide functional groups or a reactive compound including at least two functional groups selected from the group consisting of an epoxide, a maleic anhydride, an isocyanate, an acrylate, and an acetate. The flame retardant composition is particularly suitable for buffer tubes of optical fiber cables.

Flame retardant compositions for buffer tubes and method of making same

An antimicrobial article that includes: an antimicrobial composite region that includes a matrix comprising a polymeric material, and a first plurality of particles within the matrix. The particles include a phase-separable glass with a copper-containing antimicrobial agent. The antimicrobial composite region can be a film containing the first plurality of particles that is subsequently laminated to a bulk element. The first plurality of particles can also be pressed into the film or a bulk element to define an antimicrobial composite region. An exposed surface portion of the antimicrobial composite region can exhibit at least a log 2 reduction in a concentration of at least one of, andbacteria under a Modified EPA Copper Test Protocol.

Antimicrobial phase-separable glass/polymer articles and methods for making the same

Embodiments of a flame retardant compound are provided. The flame retardant compound includes a polymer base resin and a flame retardant additive distributed within the polymer base resin. The flame retardant additive includes inclusion complexes that are made of at least one guest molecule and at least one carbonific host molecule. The at least one guest molecules is a polyoxometalate ionic liquid. The flame retardant compound achieves a limiting oxygen index of at least 25% according to ISO 4589. Additionally, embodiments of a flame retardant cable are provided that utilize the flame retardant compound as a jacketing material.

Cyclodextrin-polyoxometalate ionic liquid inclusion complex flame retardant additive for making a low smoke zero halogen compound

A flame retardant polymer composition is provided. The polymer composition includes a polymer resin and a flame retardant package dispersed within the polymer resin. The flame retardant package includes an additive of a polyoxometalate ionic liquid (PIL) and a synergist carrier. In particular, the PIL includes organic cations that produce an acid upon heating. Also, a flame retardant optical fiber cable is provided. The cable includes at least one optical fiber and a polymeric jacket that surrounds the at least one optical fiber. The polymeric jacket includes a polymer resin, a carbon source, an acid source, a polyoxometalate ionic liquid (PIL), and a synergist carrier. In particular, the PIL includes organic cations that produce an acid upon heating.

Phosphate ionic liquid-polyoxometalate-inorganic flame retardant additive for LSZH compounds

A low smoke, zero halogen (LSZH) polymer composition is provided. The LSZH polymer composition includes a polymer resin, and a flame retardant package dispersed within the polymer resin. Less than 25% by weight of the polymer composition is the flame retardant package. The flame retardant package includes an acid source, a carbon source, and an LSZH additive. The LSZH additive includes a polyoxometalate ionic liquid and a synergist carrier. The LSZH polymer composition has a limiting oxygen index of greater than 31%. The LSZH polymer compound is suitable for use in electrical or tele-communication cables.

Flame retardant additive for a low smoke, zero halogen compound

A method of making an antimicrobial composite article, including the steps: providing a matrix comprising a polymeric material; providing a plurality of second phase particles comprising an antimicrobial agent; melting the matrix to form a matrix melt; distributing the plurality of second phase particles in the matrix melt at a second phase volume fraction to form a composite melt; forming a composite article from the composite melt; and treating the composite article to form an antimicrobial composite article having an exterior surface comprising an exposed portion of the matrix and the plurality of second phase particles. The distributing step can employ an extrusion process. The forming a composite article step can employ an injection molding process. The treating step can employ abrading and plasma-treating the article to define the exterior surface.

Antimicrobial phase-separable glass/polymer composite articles and methods for making the same

A cell culture article comprises virgin polystyrene disposed over at least a portion of a surface of an article main body. The article main body may be formed from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) such as reground or recycled polyethylene terephthalate. Methods of making such a cell culture article include applying a composition to a surface of an article main body, where the composition comprises virgin polystyrene having a thickness of 1 to 500 microns and the article main body is formed from glass, ceramic, metal or polymer.

Polymer surfaces for cell growth

Described herein are various polymer-covered glass and glass-ceramic articles that exhibit improved adhesion between the polymer and the glass or glass-ceramic, along with methods for their manufacture and use. The improved articles generally include a glass or glass-ceramic substrate, a surface-roughened coating disposed on at least a portion of an edge of the glass or glass-ceramic substrate, and a polymer covering disposed on at least a portion of the surface-roughened coating. The surface-roughened coatings beneficially allow the polymer coverings to adhere better to the edge surfaces of the glass or glass-ceramic substrates relative to similar or identical articles that lack the surface-roughened coating.

Polymer edge-covered glass articles and methods for making and using same

Gradient index (GRIN) lens chips and associated small form factor optical arrays for optical connections, and related fiber optic connectors are disclosed. By aligning GRIN lenses within a GRIN lens chip, a more precise and reliable alignment may be achieved with respect to optical fibers than if a single conventional ferrule is utilized to align and secure both GRIN lenses and optical fibers. The GRIN lens chip may include a GRIN lens received and thereby aligned within a groove disposed between a fiber end and a terminal end of a GRIN lens holder body. The optical fibers may also be received and thereby aligned within a groove of a ferrule body. In this manner, when the GRIN lens chip containing the GRIN lenses is aligned with a ferrule body containing the optical fibers, then the GRIN lenses may be precisely located relative to the optical fibers.
