A system and method for displaying tissue information on a display screen includes a camera capturing an image of an anatomical working site including a surgical instrument, and a display displaying the image. A tissue information detection device determines information about the health, pathology etc. of tissue in contact with a surgical instrument, or about an interaction between the surgical instrument and the tissue. The system renders overlays depicting the tissue information with the image on the display.

Communication of detected grasping forces in a surgical robotic platform

A system and method for providing visual assistance to a practitioner during a medical suturing procedure. Real time images of the suture site are captured and displayed on an image display. The images are analyzed in real time to detect the suture needle, suture penetration sites, relevant tissue, adjacent tissue edges or other features of interest in the visual images. Based on the orientation of, or relationship between, the detected features of interest, overlays are generated and displayed on the image display to inform the user about the suturing task that is underway, such as the anticipated needle path, the suture spacing, or the separation between sutures and adjacent tissue edges.

Providing surgical assistance via automatic tracking and visual feedback during surgery

A system and method fort determining the relative positions of robotic manipulators makes use of a camera positioned in an operating room so as to capture images or portions of first and second robotic manipulators that are positioned outside a patient body cavity. The camera captures images of first and second robotic manipulators, the images are analyzed in real time to determine a relative distance between the first robotic manipulator and the second robotic manipulator. The system determines whether the relative distance is below a predetermined threshold, and, if it is, initiates a collision avoidance measure.

Simultaneous direct relative measurement and calculated positions of equipment bases

In a system and method conveying suture force information in surgery, real times images of a surgical site are captured and displayed on a display. A suture is engaged using at least one surgical instrument, which in some cases is a robotic surgical instrument. The system determines a tension in the suture using force data obtained from force sensors associated with the instrument or a robotic manipulator used to manipulate the instrument, or using computer vision techniques applied to the captured images. An overlay is generated and displayed on the display depicting the determined tension.

Displaying suture force information in surgery

A system and method allow creation of surgical annotations during surgery. A digital image of a treatment site in a region of patient anatomy is captured using a camera and is displayed on an image display. The system displays an overlay marking an anatomic region of interest in the displayed image. During the course of the surgery, panning of the image results in the anatomic region of interest being outside the displayed field of view. In response to user input, the displayed image is subsequently panned such that the anatomic region of interest and the displayed overlay return to the displayed field of view.

Creating surgical annotations using anatomy identification

A system for measuring distances within a surgical site includes a camera positionable to capture 3D image data corresponding to a treatment site. Using the image data, the system determines the relative 3D positions of identified measurement points at the treatment site captured in the images, and it estimates or determines the distance between the measurement points. Output is generated communicating the measured distances to the user. The measurement taken follows the 3D topography of the tissue positioned between the measurement points.

Method and system for providing surgical site measurement

A system and method for augmenting an endoscopic display during a medical procedure including capturing a real-time image of a working space within a body cavity during a medical procedure. A feature of interest in the image is identified to the system using eye tracking input, and a graphical tag is displayed on the image marking the feature.

Method of graphically tagging and recalling identified structures under visualization for robotic surgery

A robotic surgical system includes an eye gaze sensing system in conjunction with a visual display of a camera image from a surgical work site. Detected gaze of a surgeon towards the display is used as input to the system. This input may be used by the system to assign an instrument to a control input device (when the user is prompted to look at the instrument), or it may be used as input to a computer vision algorithm to aid in object differentiation and seeding information, facilitating identification/differentiation of instruments, anatomical features or regions.

A system for determining relative positions of subsystems of a robot-assisted surgical system includes a subsystem component including a plurality of manipulator arms and a surgeon console. A robotic surgical system in which the system applies a scaling factor between user input from a user input device and corresponding movements of the robotic manipulator. A robotic system assembly comprises a robotic manipulator including an actuator assembly and a surgical instrument having a base body mountable to the actuator assembly. The base includes a first control input and a second control input, wherein the first and second control inputs are positioned on different sides of the base. The actuator assembly is moveable between open and closed positions to facilitate removal and replacement of surgical instruments. When in the closed positions, drive elements of the actuator assembly are positioned to drive the first and second control inputs of the surgical instrument to cause end effector movement or actuation.

Expandable instrument actuator

A robotic surgical system configured to control movement of a first instrument and a second instrument, each of which is on a robotic manipulator. In described modes of operation, movement of the first instrument is surgeon controlled based on surgeon input to the robotic system. Movement of the second instrument is also surgeon controlled, but its motion is defined by the chosen mode of operation which sets the amplitude and direction of the second instrument's motion relative to the actual or instructed motion of the first instrument. In this way, two instruments are simultaneously moved based on input from a single surgeon input device.

A surgical system includes a light source, a sensor for detecting light, and a surgical device including an elongate shaft having a distal part positionable at a surgical working site within a body cavity. A first optical pathway transmits light from the light source to a distal part of the elongate shaft and onto tissue within the body cavity, and a second optical pathway receives light from tissue within the body cavity and transmits the received light to the sensor. A surgical barrier, such as one covering a robotic manipulator arm housing components of the system, is positioned such that at least the first or second optical pathway includes an optically transmissive portion of the surgical barrier.

A powered user interface for a robotic surgical system operates in accordance with a mode of operation in which the actuators are operated to permit motion of the handle in pitch and yaw motion constrained with respect to a virtual fulcrum in a work space of the user interface, and insertion motion is constrained along an axis passing through the virtual fulcrum. In a virtual fulcrum setting mode, a user is prompted to give input to the system selecting a desired point in space for the virtual fulcrum. The selected point in space is then set as the virtual fulcrum.
