A traceable cable and method of forming the same. The cable includes at least one data transmission element, a jacket at least partially surrounding the at least one data transmission element, and a side-emitting optical fiber incorporated with and extending along at least a portion of the length of the cable. The side-emitting optical fiber has a core and a cladding substantially surrounding the core to define an exterior surface. The cladding has spaced apart scattering sites penetrating the exterior surface along the length of the optical fiber. The scattering sites scattering light so that the scattered light is emitted from the side-emitting optical fiber at discrete locations. When light is transmitted through the core, light scattered from the side-emitting optical fiber allows the cable to be traced along at least a portion of the length thereof.

Traceable cable with side-emitting optical fiber and method of forming the same

A method for measuring a mechanical property of a coating on an optical fiber may include collecting Brillouin frequency shift data of the coating on the optical fiber, and determining the mechanical property of the coating by comparing the collected Brillouin frequency shift data with correlation data that may include a set of collected sample Brillouin frequency shift data and a set of collected sample mechanical property data of a plurality of sample materials. The sample materials may include a substantially identical sample composition including one or more curable polymers, be prepared with varying processing conditions, and have different mechanical property values. The coating on the optical fiber may include a material composition substantially identical to the sample materials composition. The set of collected sample Brillouin frequency shift data may be correlated with the set of collected sample mechanical property data to determine a quantitative relationship therebetween.

Methods and devices for measuring properties of coatings on optical fibers

A traceable cable and method of forming the same. The cable includes at least one data transmission element, a jacket at least partially surrounding the at least one data transmission element, and a side-emitting optical fiber incorporated with and extending along at least a portion of the length of the cable. The side-emitting optical fiber can have a core, spaced apart scattering sites having scattering material disposed on an exterior surface of the core along the length of the optical fiber, and a cladding substantially surrounding the core and the scattering material. The scattering sites are capable of scattering light so that the scattered light is emitted from the side-emitting optical fiber at discrete locations proximate to the scattering sites. When light is transmitted through the core, light scattered from the side-emitting optical fiber allows the cable to be traced along at least a portion of the length thereof.

Optical fibers having a mode field diameter at 1310 nm of at least 8.8 &#x3bc;m, wire mesh covered drum microbending losses at 1550 nm less than 0.03 dB/km, and a 2 m cutoff wavelength less than 1320 nm. The fibers may include a central core region, an inner cladding region, an outer cladding region, a primary coating with an in situ modulus less than 0.20 MPa and glass transition temperature less than &#x2212;35&#xb0; C., and a secondary coating with an in situ modulus greater than 1500 MPa. The fibers may further include a depressed index cladding region. The relative refractive index of the central core region may be greater than the relative refractive index of the outer cladding region may be greater than the relative refractive index of the inner cladding region. The fibers may be produced at draw speeds of 30 m/s or greater.

Optical fiber with large mode field diameter and low microbending losses

A campfire grilling device comprising (i) a stake, (ii) a slide hammer on the stake, (iii) a horizontal support, with grilling surface, (iv) a frictional engager to hold the horizontal support to the stake, and (v) a grill lifting tool is disclosed. Using the grill lifting tool and a handle on the horizontal support, a campfire cook can easily adjust the height of the grilling surface, even while the campfire is burning. The horizontal support can also be pivoted about the stake, so the grilling surface can be swiveled on or off the fire.
