A method useful with oxy-fuel combustion and in a furnace which contains molten material, wherein either substoichiometric or superstoichiometric combustion and low velocity injection of fuel and primary and secondary oxidant in an oxy-fuel burner are carried out in an orientation which forms either a reducing or oxidizing atmosphere proximate the molten surface.

Furnace and process for controlling the oxidative state of molten materials

An apparatus for continuation of combustion with a combustion apparatus when the supply of the normal operating oxidant or normal operating fuel is disrupted, or temporally reduced. Air or oxygen enriched air or oxygen and a gaseous fuel or a liquid fuel or both a gaseous and liquid fuel are introduced into the combustion apparatus in place of the normal oxidant-fuel mixture to effect combustion and maintain the heating level in the furnace. Multi-mode combustion device and method for using the device

A burner includes separate fuel and oxidant conduits. The fuel conduit has inlet, transitional, and outlet sections, and the oxidant conduit has inlet and outlet sections. The burner has a longitudinal axis and including a burner tip having a first elongated edge adjacent a flow of the fuel, and a second elongated edge adjacent a flow of an oxidant and forming a primary tip angle (&#x3b1;) of less than about 15&#xb0; from a line parallel to the longitudinal axis and intersecting an upstream surface parallel to the longitudinal axis. The first elongated edge and the second elongated edge form a secondary tip angle (&#x3b2;) greater than the primary tip angle (&#x3b1;) and less than about 90&#xb0; from a line tangent to and extending from the first elongated edge in the direction of the flow of the fuel.

Air or oxygen enriched air and fuel are introduced into the device being heated in place of the oxy-fuel mixture to effect combustion and maintain the heating level in the furnace. Water cooling of the furnace gases is used to reduce the volume of exhaust gases when operating in the air or oxygen enriched air mode.

Method and apparatus for backing-up oxy-fuel combustion with air-fuel combustion

A process and furnace for melting glass is set forth wherein the majority of the combustion energy over the melting zone of the furnace is provided by oxy-fuel combustion while a majority of the combustion energy over the fining zone of the furnace is provided by air-fuel combustion. In many cases, it will be preferable to provide greater than 70% and up to and including 100% of the combustion energy over the melting zone by oxy-fuel combustion and greater than 70% and up to and including 100% of the combustion energy over the fining zone by air-fuel combustion. By proper tailoring of the combustion space atmosphere through oxy-fuel and air-fuel firing, the present invention can result in an improvement in glass productivity and quality. The present invention can be applied in the construction of a new furnace or can be applied to existing air-fuel furnaces.
